P0345

Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2)

DTC P0345, sometimes indicated as P034500 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the ignition system causing camshaft position sensor a circuit malfunction (bank 2).

The camshaft position sensor is used to determine the position of the camshaft. This information is used by the engine control unit to control the fuel injection and ignition timing.
The camshaft position sensor is a Hall-effect sensor. This means that it uses a magnetic field to determine the position of the camshaft. The sensor has a small magnet attached to the camshaft. As the magnet rotates, it passes by a sensor coil. This coil produces a voltage that is proportional to the position of the magnet.
The camshaft position sensor is located in the engine block, on the front of the engine. It is mounted on the camshaft drive sprocket.
The camshaft position sensor is a common failure item on the 2.0L turbocharged engine. The most common symptoms of a failed camshaft position sensor are:
- Engine misfire
- Rough running engine
- Lack of power
- Engine stalls
The camshaft position sensor can be tested with a multimeter. The resistance should be about 1.5 ohms. If the resistance is not within specification, the sensor is

2007 NISSAN MURANO with 156300. miles

I was driving and randomly lost power. No powersteering, no acceleration, no brakes, all of the lights on the dash turned on like the engine shut off, and the key was turned back to electrical (while in the middle of driving, i'm 100% sure the car turned off without the ignition key switching to off). This has happened about 5 times now. The code P0345 activated shortly after the second time it happened. It has happened when decelerating/braking, accelerating, and coasting, low and high speeds. I know there are other reports of this with Muranos on the internet and apparently happens to a few other Nissans. This started in early june, when the temperatures are above mid 80's.

2006 NISSAN ALTIMA with 147000. miles

Check engine light came on about 2 days prior to incident. Went to a friends house, while slowing down for a speed bump car completely shut off. After leaving house car acceleration was very hesitate, took it to advanced auto to get the codes read on the car and it came back P0345 camshaft position sensor malfunction and P0430 catalytic converter failure and cylinder 3 misfire. So i called Nissan because i went online reading about recalls on the 2006 Nissan Altima engines but they told me that mines was not one of them. Changed both camshaft sensors and cylinder 3 coil. And car still acting like it doesn't want to start and stall. Took it to my mechanic and the way it looks i might have a head gasket blown. Crazy because researching on the internet, i see a lot of Altima owners are having the same problem.

2006 TOYOTA AVALON with 153189. miles

On june 7, 2019, i was driving the Avalon, the engine suddenly stopped while i was driving the vehicle on city street. With the loss of power steering and brakes, i was traumatized and did my best to guide the vehicle to side of the road. I had the vehicle towed home and hooked up to a code reader, which yielded codes P0345, P0300, P0302, P0304, P0306. We did further diagnostics and discovered the 3 bolts that hold the variable-valve timing (vvt) gear to the intake camshaft came loose, these bolts are supposed to be temper-resistant and never be removed which led me to believe the result of engine dying is caused by serious manufacturing and design defects. Please refer to attached three pictures showing 3 bolts laying next to vvt gear, vvt gear loosely held on and the vibration of bolt left cutting mark on the gear, and all intake cam rockers falling out. I did more research and concluded the root cause of engine stopped while the vehicle is being driven in our Avalon is identical to Toyota safety recall 13v-395 in lexus vehicles 2006 to 2011. Please find attached two documents, rcrit-13v395-3180.Pdf on recent recall for Toyota safety recall 13v-395, rcdnn-13v395-1839.Pdf on defect information report from Toyota to nhtsa on lexus intake-side variable-valve timing (vvt) system part 573. On june 27, 2019, i called stevens creek Toyota and Toyota hq and logged case [xxx]. I was informed by Toyota there's no recall for Avalon with the vin, and the vehicle had no factory warranty (currently 153k miles), and no extended warranty with engine stall for Avalon. As a result, we need to repair the vehicle in our own expense which requires engine rebuilt as engine stall has caused severe damage to the vehicle. I was appalled by Toyota for lack of initiation to address the safety risk in our Avalon and we appreciate your thorough investigation in this matter. 2005 NISSAN MURANO with 52244.0 miles

2005 Nissan Murano taken in to Nissan of gastonia on 4/27/10 to have the air intake recall corrected. Mileage is about 52,000 miles. On 4/29/10, my check engine light came on and immediately had trouble with delayed starting. Code P0345 camshaft position sensor a bank 2 circuit malfunction. Called dealership and made appointment for their next available date 5/4/10 and took it in to be looked at. Service manager felt quite certain that they had left something unplugged. He came back to me 1 hour later to advise that i needed a new camshaft position sensor. It cost me $247 to replace the sensor. Too many issues with this sensor on line on Nissan recalls for this not to be a safety concern on the 05 Muranos' too.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,

2004 NISSAN MAXIMA

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima. When i was driving, the steering locked up and there was no way to steer. I don?T know how i did it, being petite and not so strong, but i managed to make the car move to the side, then it turned off automatically. I tried to turn on the car and it didn't start. I had to wait a few minutes and turn the key for a few seconds until the engine restarted. It becomes extremely difficult to pull over to the side, and i was saved the 5-7 times this happened to me. Luck was on my side! I didn't drive my car on the freeway, because i was terrified my car would stall and my son and i would die in a terrible car accident. I finally had to go to my shop and replace the two camshaft sensors with the following codes P3040 and P0345. With some searching, i found out that i?M not the only one with this issue. I stand by the former complaint: ?I found out that Nissan has a recall on altima?S with this same issue, but will not cover and recall my vehicle. This is very dangerous and i do not understand why they would only recall certain makes when it is the same exact error code on both vehicles. It is a P3040 and P0345 cam sensor/cam shaft recall through Nissan. However, they say my make and model does not fall under this recall. Shouldn't they recall all vehicles with this same problem?? Thank you for your help in this safety issue.

2003 NISSAN MAXIMA

Please fix your auto fill --- it just erased everything! Anyway, the engine cuts out while driving in traffic. The engine cuts out while waiting at a red light. The engine cuts out while turning. It's all random! The engine code shows P0340, bank 1 and bank2, and sometimes P0345. I have replaced the camshaft position sensors five times!!!!! I have tried both auto zone and hitachi, and neither of them solves the problem. I also paid to have the crankshaft sensor below replaced, and that didn't help. I am told that this problem has been posted online and it was recommended to only use oem parts. This is very dangerous to lose power while in traffic, and then having to wait until the engine will restart, which eventually it does. This is an ongoing problem. Please help!!!

2003 INFINITI I35 with 89236.0 miles

As i was approaching an intersection to make a left turn my car died suddenly. I wasn't sure what was happening. Since it started up immediately i didn't really think anything of it. Since the check engine light stayed on, i brought it in to my mechanic and he checked it out and thought he had fixed the issue. I had no issues for a short period of time. When it happened the second time and i was driving 35 mph, i knew something had to be wrong. This time the check engine soon light, slp and esc light all came on and the car starts jerking forward and then the car died. I managed to steer the car from the left lane to the right lane and pull over. It was a really strange and scary feeling. I told my mechanic what happened and he said cars just don't die as you are driving them and i said well this one did. I brought it to my mechanic again and the code P0345, cam sensor came up. After bringing it in a few times for the same issue, check engine soon light, slp and esc light all coming on and the car jerking forward we decided to see if there were any recalls on the car. Our research showed that there was a recall on this issue and we should contact Infiniti. I contacted Infiniti and they said my vin is not on the recall list for this issue. My question is what does it take for Infiniti to own up that there is an issue with owners driving a car and it dying suddenly? Obviously it will take a few serious accidents. I brought my car into the dealer today hoping that they will fix this issue. When i told the dealer what was happening he said you have a technical issue and it is not a recall.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,

2003 NISSAN MAXIMA with 170000. miles

While driving at approx 30 mph, the car shut off as my child and i were coming to a stoplight. I had no problem restarting and encountered this same problem 4 more times during my trip, including failure to idle. Check engine light never came on. Next time, i was driving approx 45 mph and the car shut off and it tried restarting itself while i was trying to find a safe place to pull over. The car restarted again no problem. Then as my husband and i were driving at approx. 60 mph the car began to lurch (stopping and attempting to start again by itself). Pulled off the road and was able to restart the car, all of these instances no check engine light. Lastly, i was unable to start the car after parking it away from home and it was acting like it was "flooded". After 20 minutes of attempted starting, it finally took and i drove home on the back roads. After several attempts at home to recreate the no start problem, the check engine light is finally on! At this point, i'm not driving this vehicle until we have the bank 2 camshaft position sensor replaced. We ran a code reader and got a P0345 code. Nissan has a recall on this year make/model but i, like many, many other consumers have been told, their vin is not part of the recall from 2003. I would like to know if anyone's vin fell into their recall. I just told the Nissan "customer service" that i am afraid driving this car could result in fatalities, and they suggested i take it to the dealership and maybe they could do something for me! Like sell me a new car? Never again, Nissan.
ENGINE,

2003 NISSAN MAXIMA with 125000. miles

While driving at a relatively low speed (~30 mph), the engine suddenly stalled. I was able to pull over to the side of the road, and restart the engine a short time later. Within 30 seconds of driving (again), the engine suddenly stalled again. I had to stop driving. Just the previous day, the check-engine-light came on, indicating error codes P0340 and P0345. Upon checking the internet, it seems that nhtsa campaign id 03v455000 may be relevant (it covers 2003 Maxima). The symptoms my car exhibited are the same as those described. However, when i called Nissan, i was told that my car's vin was not covered by recall. It seems very, very coincidental that i would experience the same problem described in the recall, but am not subject to recall. It seems that Nissan is under-reporting the cars affected, and i fear my car would be quite unsafe to drive (with random, sudden stalls).

2003 INFINITI G35 with 114285. miles

The car is a 2003 Infiniti G35. My wife was crossing an intersection when the car just stopped. Traffic coming the other way had to also stop to avoid an accident. She was able to start the car and get it going again, only for it to stop running one more time before getting home. I pulled the diagnostic codes from the car. It failed with a P0345 crankshaft position sensor a circuit bank 2. This sensor had a voluntary replacement from Infiniti on the same year model car, except our vin number falls just outside of the range. I truly believe that should be expanded, as this can cause a fatal accident should it fail at the wrong time. The car dies, which means you lose the power steering and brakes. I will replace the sensors as the dealer i spoke with would not cover it under the voluntary replacement due to the vin not being covered. There are 4 of these sensors on this car so there is a potential for failure. Please look into getting the recall for this part expanded to cover all cars. There is too much at stake to not do that.

The vehicle has twice lost power and engine died while moving down the street. The check engine light was on after this incident and showed code P0345: camshaft position sensor a (bank 2). This vehicle does not show up on the r3022 crankshaft/camshaft sensor recall. However, the vehicle was manufactured 06/2002 and the recall dates include from 02/2001 to 07/2002. This vehicle has 91,694 miles on it and thus should not be exhibiting this problem from normal wear and tear. This is a very serious problem and could cause a crash in the future.
