P0303

Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

DTC P0303, sometimes indicated as P030300 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the ignition system causing cylinder 3 misfire detected.

One common cause of a P0303 code is a defective spark plug or coil pack in cylinder 3. Other causes can include a vacuum leak, clogged or dirty fuel injector, or a problem with the ignition system.
If you have a P0303 code, it's a good idea to check all of the ignition components, including the spark plugs, coils, and wiring. Also check the vacuum lines and fuel injector for any signs of damage or obstruction.

2019 FORD ESCAPE with 28000.0 miles

Bought this car as certified pre owned from a Ford dealer with 28k miles. Approx. 4 weeks after purchase the engine starts running rough and check engine light came on with an error code P0303 misfire. Took it to dealer and they diagnosed coolant in cylinder 3 with the fix being a new short block engine replacement. It was still under warranty but very frustrating this happened to a car with low miles. After doing research this is a very common problem with the Ford 1.5 liter engine.

2018 HONDA ACCORD with 70000.0 miles

Driving down the highway going 70mph and check engine light starts flashing. Car stops accelerating i limp over to the median. I turn the vehicle off and turn it back on. The car has a solid check engine on along with all the assisting lights on. The car accelerates like normal and when i get home i disconnect the battery and everything clears once i reconnect. In another instance i go to turn my car on the check engine light stays on but the vehicle won't go past 1500 rpms and it's basically in limp mode with the check engine light on again to go along with road departure system, vehicle stability system, tire pressure monitoring, brake system, electric power steering, hill start assist, adaptive cruise control , collision mitigation and emission system warnings all light up. I did the same thing disconnect the battery and again they all go away. This has been going on for a month. At least 9 times where all the warning lights come on along with the check engine light. Once when i'm traveling as explained and 2 times where it goes into limp mode from the start. Took vehicle to a friend and got a P0303 cylinder 3 misfire. Having done research of the code noticed that 2012-2018 Honda's have had similar issues addressed by a bulletin and extended the warranty for those vehicles. My car has 70k and it's currently out of the warranty period. Thank you.

Did some research online to find that several people are having the same issue. While these lights are on there is no cruise control, lane assist or anything. Called Honda and there was no known issue. Dealership suggested maybe Honda will pay to fix issue... Well, of course no such luck.

2018 HONDA CR-V with 4525.0 miles

When driving my vehicle on the highway, it shut down and the service engine light came on, it had lost all power and it had 4525 miles on it. I was on my way to take it up for a recall for a software update with a/c control unit replacement ; dtc P0300, P0301,P0302,P0303,P0304,or P0172. I had to call Honda road side assistance and my vehicle was hauled on a flat bed trailer to get the recall fixed. This recall also involved an oil change, of which they were making the customer responsible to pay for the filter, they would change the filter with the oil change, but not pay for the filter when changing the oil. There is also an oil disillusion problem with this vehicle as there is gas going into the oil causing a gas smell in the oil and thinning out the oil. Also there is a heating problem with this vehicle as there is no heat which comes out of the blowers, which where i live is very important to have for 6-9 months out of the year. I would rather not have air conditioning as i can roll down my window to get cooled off, but there is only one way i can get heat in my car and that is from running the engine and using the climate control in the car. In cold weather states when driving this car is not safe because when it shuts down and isn't drivable and the car isn't able to produce heat when you are stranded a person could freeze to death because of the cars inability to produce heat while stranded in the cold weather. My oil already smells of gas and i have driven it less than 700 miles since the oil change, that was performed with the recall. I am taking to Honda dealer again for an exam i was told, to check out spark plugs and x-ray them and also for another oil change, with 5219 miles on car now, so with less than 700 miles from last oil change i will now be getting another. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.S.C. 552(b)(6).

Car ~8000 miles, on taking to dealership was told extreme carbon buildup had caused misfires. Car was returned, functioned for a month. Issue reoccurred, fuel injectors, fuel joint pipe set, and fuel pump were replaced. Car is currently functional but it is concerning that fuel injectors have failed on a new vehicle after under 10,000 miles.

Luckily my car is still under warranty, and they've agreed to cover the full cost of an engine replacement. Others not wo lucky. Ford knows this is an issue and charging 10 grand to repair when its really at no fault of the consumers own. This time it was anti frreze in number 3 cylinder approx 55,000 mileage. Service dept checked vehicle and came back and stated i need new engine. That they would order engine from Ford and get back to me in about a week when to bring vehicle back and it would take 3 to 4 weeks to install engine and they will rent me a car. My problem with this is that i have to drive a vehicle that could stall and get rear ended until they get back to me. This vehicle should have gotten new engine back in 3-15-2019 because that is the fix Ford recommends. Their on hundreds of complaints for this same problem going back to 2010 with the turbos. My vehicle has a 2.0 turbo and should never have been sold without this problem being corrected. Now i have a vehicle with a history of engine problems and if i attempt to trade in will come back on vehicle history. My position is Ford was hoping that i would go over the 60,000 warranty and they would not have to cover any further repair without me shelling out 8,000 dollars for repair.

My check engine light came on, checked vehicle with code reader and code P0303 & P0316 showed. When vehicle started when cold, it would chug and stall out at times. Vehicle was brought to dealership. They found coolant was getting into the #3 cylinder. Therefore requiring a new long block. We researched tsb19-2346 and found the exact symptoms to what caused my engine failure, and this goes for all 2.0 liter eco-boost engines. Basically, a factory material defect in head that allowed coolant to leak into cylinder block, which can cause engine failure. My Ford warranty was expired due to my vehicle mileage. My extended warranty company due to wording in contract would only cover internal , lubricated failure of engine. The dealership deemed my failure to be an external, material cause because it came from the head. I called Ford motor company and they had nothing to say about it and would not back their product. In the end, i believe with no question that this should have been a recall, which it never was. My vehicle had around 86,000 miles and should not need a new engine. My vehicle was a 2016 Ford Edge se, with 2.0 liter eco-boost, that i purchased brand new.

On 9/3/15, i was pulling into my garage when all the warning lights on the dashboard went off - transmission, check engine, lane detection light etc. Since i was going out of town the next morning, i put it in reverse and drove directly to the dealer. The car was in "limp mode" and i could only drive 35-40 mph. I showed the tech in the service dept. All the warning lights going off, and he said he had never seen anything like this before. He wrote up a work order with the following info: inspect for check engine light on, check engine light flashing and every warning light in the vehicle is on, would not accelerate over 35 mph. The following day i was contacted by the service dept. And was told they could not find a problem; there were no lights on, they even drove it for 40 miles. The service dept. Said they are only allowed to hold the car for five days. Today, 9/8/25 i picked up the car. The dealer's invoice reads: cause: light on 123505 diagnostic trouble codes/programmed fuel injection (pgm-fi) retrieve codes with the hds, read data, 74 wa3. Inspected for check engine light on, found dtc P0303 (cylinder # 3 misfire) recorded freeze data and cleared codes, at time of inspection vehicle was running perfectly, test drove vehicle twice on extended test drives and engine ran perfectly, no dtcs are reset no problem is present at this time. Since the service dept. Could not find the problem and fix it, this means the car has not been repaired and i am driving a defective car. The next time the warning lights go on, i could be travelling on a crowded freeway at a high rate of speed (with my family inside), the car goes in to "limp mode - 35 mph and an accident occurs. This is a safety issue. How can Acura manufacture a $50,000.00 car and their dealership not be able to find the problem and repair it?

2015 FORD FUSION with 94500.0 miles

In aug 2020 the check engine light came on in my 2015 Ford Fusion after it started rough. I brought it to the Ford dealership for service. They said the spark plugs and coils should be replaced (check engine code was P0303, cylinder misfire). A month later the same issue occurred again. Called the dealership and the service mgr said 'oh, there have been problems with the Fusion ecoboost engines. Coolant leaks into the cylinders and damages them. He said the design of the engine block has score grooves between the cylinders eventually causing the leak and corrosion to start. He then proceeded to inform me that the long block and head gasket would need to be replaced and the starting cost would $5,000+. But likely closer to $7000. Further he said Ford was aware of the issue but not recalling or covering the replacement cost. He said he had 8 other vehicles on the lot needing the same repair and even if they had the parts in stock, which they don't and it would take some time to get them, if would be 6 weeks to complete the repair. The replacement would be the entire engine which Ford has corrected the issue and removed the scored grooves. I have maintained my Fusion with the same Ford dealership and had all routine maintenance and care done there. This engine issue was there at the time it was manufactured and was a time bomb. I should not have to incur the expense or financial loss to replace the engine. If left unrepaired the engine will eventually cease and depending on where that occurs could be dangerous to me and surrounding drivers. I have parked my vehicle for now until the service manager lets me know what Ford will do, if anything. He said they might give me some help but i would have to cover most of the expense!!! I

2015 FORD FUSION with 103000. miles

Just got this Ford vehicle a couple months ago and for some reason my car wouldn't start. I ran a diagnostic and had numerous codes P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0030, C0014, P0047, P0141, and a few others. I looked for loose wires, checked fuses, plugs etc. The only thing at this point i noticed was two cracked spark plugs, so i replaced all off them. After that the car started so i thought it was fixed. Closed the hood turned the car to off, then tried to start it again. It did not start. So i checked all the fluids and seen the antifreeze disappeared, i had previously filled it. I looked for any visible leaks, puddles, and checked for wet carpet and found nothing. I went and bought another large jug of antifreeze put it in and watched it all disappear before my eyes. I could not figure it out, but i got the car started and still continued to get massive error codes, white smoke, rough sound, etc. Then searched more and found it sounds like blown head gasket, i checked and the oil had a milky tint. This i then found was a recall for my vehicle, so i spoke with someone from Ford on march 20, 2021 and they said they needed to check if my local Ford dealership had the parts to get my car in or if they needed to order the parts. I was suppose to get a call back but have not heard anything. I have not been driving, i did use leak fix it seemed to stop the leak and clear the codes but my dash check engine light keeps flashing so i didn't want to cause further damage. The recall number i found was nhtsa id number: 10174400, my car is a 2015 Ford Fusion ecoboost 1.5l, vin number# [xxx], and my local Ford is in heath, ohio 43056 at mathews Ford. I am getting the impression this is going to be at my cost after contacting Ford again, now telling me that it will need diagnosed at Ford, and may be at my cost. Why doesn't the recall list under my vin? Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.S.C. 552(b)(6).

I gently applied acceleration to 10-mph. Engine continued to shudder as i continued and stopped at another traffic light. Again i gently applied acceleration. The engine continued to shudder until i found a safe place to park and switched it off. The engine shuddered at a consistent level for a total of about 8-minutes. I called my local Honda service dept to ask about possible causes and if the vehicle was safe to drive. The service rep asked me about a previous repair noted on his computer for an issue the van had regarding the replacement of an oil sensor in october 2019, and if it was related. I told him i didn't know. Since he couldn't identify the problem, he advised me not to start the engine and drive because it could possibly cause more damage, and the vehicle was not safe to drive. Then i called roadside assistance and my van was taken to my Honda service dept. On the following monday, a service rep called me with the diagnosis code P0303, which he said indicates that a misfire was detected in the #3 cylinder. The rep said that this issue allowed oil to pass by the multiple oil rings on the piston into the chamber and fouled the spark plug. He told me that this issue was not covered by the warranty. The service rep quoted $4,420.00 to repair obdii code P0303. I asked him if the malfunction could have been prevented. The service rep said that this problem is not a result of any driver action or lack of maintenance. He said that Honda is aware of this problem and i should call american Honda automobiles (800-999-1009).

Suddenly while driving i noticed a light on and it was on and off, and oil smell. The price is 4000 to fix the problem because is a misfire in one of the cylinders of the engine. This is the only car that i have right now and i am scare to drive it because i don't think it is safe to drive it with oil smell, it might caught on fire or something . The starter is not working and when driving is unstable. I just drive locally i don't know how this car is giving me an engine problem with that low mileage. It is not possible that a car parked and using not often could have an engine problem. I bought this car thinking to keep it for a long time since i always take a good care of my cars. I need an explanation from Jeep regarding this problem. I am not going to spend over $4000 in a car with less than 100,000 miles and with a problem that was not done by me. I need to resolve this since it might be a safety risk if i continue driving this car with some type of engine/ oil smell. Again work was completed, the code came back, and now Ford is recommending replacing the engine but will not cover the costs due to being 5 years and in excess of 60k miles. Took for 2nd opinion and ran out of coolant and overheated less than 5 miles away from Ford dealership, even though they just replaced the coolant overflow tank and filled it.. Continues need coolant every few miles. Seems crazy that a vehicle that stayed on top of routine maintenance and has not been involved in an accident or excessive conditions would need a new engine at less than 94k miles and is the consumer's responsibility to foot the bill. I've already spent almost $3k on this issue and Ford verbally told me just the engine would be around $7-8k without labor. They also had their sales department call me and offer to "take a couple hundred off a new vehicle" for my current one. After sitting for about 10 minutes, it started back up with less violent shaking but still with reduced power, she was able to 'limp' to the pellegrino dealership in williamstown, nj. It had fault codes P0300 and P0303 for random engine misfire and cylinder 3 misfire. They diagnosed as "minimally needing cylinder #3 fuel injector plus additional diagnostics afterwards to determine full extent of issue" first threshold would be $1500 and possibly several thousand possibly including an engine replacement. They offered $2000 trade-in toward another vehicle there. With hardly any diagnostics, i was surprised of 'possible engine replacement' diagnosis, so i took the vehicle to another shop to do the fuel injector replacement plus check plugs, coils (all good), clean remaining fuel injectors and intake manifold for a fraction of what the dealership quoted. Cylinder compression was good, but the same random misfire P0300 code and P0303 codes still come up and idles very rough with engine noise and significant reduced power. Clearly, the injector was not the root cause of the problem. If fuel is given more aggressively, all the stabilitrak lights come back up. In doing additional research online, it appears to be a common issue. Oil changes were performed routinely at the dealership since we had a "lube for life" contract. Mileage is 116,640.

On 4/5/19, my wife's Honda pilot ex experienced severe engine problems on the road in fairview tn resulting in an inability to accelerate, hesitation when the gas pedal was depressed, and a flashing 'check engine' light. These symptoms were identical to an issue she had with this vehicle in 2017 that necessitated a tow to darrell waltrip Honda in franklin tn for repair, and similar to less severe episodes of hesitant acceleration both she and i have experienced with the vehicle since at least 2016. Grassland car care center in franklin tn diagnosed the spark plugs were oil fouled causing a misfire. Engine codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, and P0300 resulted from the incident. We have since learned this is a known defect with this model of Honda and that the vcm-2 class action lawsuit resulted in a warranty extension of eight years from purchase date. We have an open case with Honda of america (case manager: zoe; case #09478660), but are being told that our vehicle is outside the extended eight year warranty by four months. We contend this vehicle was experiencing problems consistent with the warrantied issue well before the 4/5/19 failure, to include the same type of episode supposedly repaired by darrell waltrip Honda on 5/1/17. The sudden inability to accelerate on a roadway is a considerable safety concern. We are questioning why this wasn't a safety recall item. We have additional documentation available if needed.

2011 NISSAN JUKE with 29010.0 miles

Slowed down to turn and was rear ended by another vehicle, causing damage to back of my car, however the air bags did not deploy at anytime during or after the accident. Multiple complaints during the time i've owned the car: hesitation when going from lower speed to higher speed not accelerating to higher speed, my complaint of engine noise documented in the dealer service invoice on dec.1, 2011; 3 rough, jerky , uneven ride, oil leaks. Fuel pressure sensor re- torqued and gaskets replaced in may 2012 and notation made in comment section: ' performed system check as stated in bulletin', but i never received any notification from Nissan about an official re-call on parts. Check engine light complaint to dealer service dept. On sept.27, 2012 and notation made in notes ' P0303 stored in ecu' and check engine light complaint oct. 31,2012 and stated cause by service dept. Is 'cylinder lost compression' and charged me $ 8080.12 for engine work : gaskets replaced on the adapter, exhaust, manifold and water pump. Nov. 2, 2012 the dealer service dept. Found 60% oil inside tubes and same failure code appeared P0303. Spark plugs replaced dec. 21 2013, and on jan.10, 2014 the coils were replaced , the spark plugs were replaced again ,and the service dept. Noted a loss of power in test drive and again noted water in the fuel. I've had multiple numerous complaints , the above noted is documented in the service dept. Paperwork. I was not aware of the re-calls by Nissan until 1 month ago. To date , Nissan has not contacted me.

2010 HONDA ACCORD with 129000. miles

Burning oil excessively since i have had the car. I never got a recall notice. Having to add a qt or better a week. June 12 it stalled out all the way home from work. That was a sunday. Just checked the oil on thursday. Oil was okay in thursday. On sunday no oil to show on dipstick. Burnt at least 3 qts in less than 200 miles! Drained what little oil was left. Changed filter and put new oil in. Still would not run. Changed spark plugs and it ran better but still has a slight mis. Dtc P0303. The dealership deleted the code and said it wasn't a code in there. Will not do anything. I had it read before i took it there and have a picture of it. The paint has been chipping off for over a year, not where rocks hit. Places that are curved or rounded. Edges of the roof or fender. It's only 6 years old. Honda doesn't stand by either of these issues. Never again will i own a Honda. The car is not leaking oil and it is not smoking. The oil is going some place. And that is causing serious damage to my car. Not to mention the damage that's already been caused. A software update doesn't fix the damage that's been caused already.

2010 GMC ACADIA with 80000.0 miles

At 80,000 miles, after pulling out of parking, when i applied brakes the car started making rumbling noise from the engine and lurched forward despite pressing on brakes to stop. Pulled into a parking spot, while continuing to fight lurching of vehicle and turned car off to check engine oil, transmission oil, and power steering oil levels. All were fine. When attempted restart of vehicle, loud rumbling noise from engine, check engine light flickered and the car failed to start. Required a tow home from 100 miles away and $400. Hooked up obd, and received the following faults P0008, P0303, P0305, P0017, P0300, P0301. After researching on-line, common faults for timing chain issue estimate $3-4 thousand repair. Also, found 2007-2009 Acadia received extended warranty for same issue. However, 2010 not covered despite finding approximately 15 identical 2010 Gmc Acadia on nhtsa site. I will be calling dealership first workday, however expect to be told timing chain issue based on codes and that Gmc will not cover the repair since i am outside of the 5 year warranty, despite less than their 100,000 mile coverage.

2010 HONDA ACCORD CROSSTOUR with 90000.0 miles

The check engine light comes on,and flashes.Generating a P0303 misfire code. The spark plug on that particular cylinder is oil fouled, causing the misfire. The first time this happened was in the middle of north dakota driving at highway speeds on the interstate last winter. The spark plugs were changed by me on the side of the road. Cylinder three spark plug was very heavily oil fouled. After replacement of the spark plugs, the misfire did not continue at that point, check engine light went out.No further action was taken. That happened on november 30th 2016.The most recent event happened april 17th.The car was running rough again upon startup, and check engine light flashing.Brought the car to my mechanic who inspected, and found code P0303 cylinder misfire. #3 plug very saturated with oil, and fouled. Please see attachment for further information.

ENGINE,

2009 HONDA ACCORD with 67000.0 miles

While driving at about 55 mph on route i-287 in morristown, nj, the car began to shake badly and the engine made a loud rumbling noise. I got the car to my local service station in morristown, where my mechanic told me that one of my spark plugs had failed to function, having been badly oil fouled. He replaced the spark plug and said the computer scanner showed code P0303 misfire cylinder #3. He also noted that Honda has a service campaign for piston ring replacement initiated in 2013 to correct the problem. I brought the car to Honda on monday, february 13. They replaced 3 of the 4 spark plugs in question (1 having already been replaced) and updated the car's computer program, calling that step one in solving the problem. The Honda service manager explained that Honda's protocol for this is to update the software and replace spark plugs and then wait to see if it happens again. (i later confirmed this protocol by phone with Honda america.) lacking that, Honda will not reimburse the dealership if they do the repair, but this fix seems to work about half the time. When the service campaign was initiated in 2013, i was not notified. Clearly, Honda recognized that there was a problem of oil leaking into the cylinders but did not issue a recall, as i believe they should have. In my case, my engine failed while i was driving at high speed on a major highway. This is not something i would like to happen again, but my local mechanic says it definitely will happen again, because Honda did not fix the problem. Replacing spark plugs is no more than a band aid. I'm left with a serious and expensive problem, and Honda's intention is to skirt the real issue by risking my safety in order to avoid accountability.
