  Kia america, inc. (kia) is recalling certain 2015-2019 soul ev vehicles equipped with an e400 battery. The high-voltage battery pack may experience an electrical short-circuit while driving.
  dealers will update and/or replace the battery management system and software, as necessary, free of charge. The new software will illuminate the ev warning light, limit charging capacity, and reduce vehicle power if abnormal voltage is detected. If this occurs, the battery will be replaced, free of charge. • Recall 141142 [USA]: Piston damage may result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. a broken connecting rod may puncture the engine block allowing engine oil to escape. the leaking oil may contact the exhaust, increasing the risk of a fire.
  Kia motors america (kia) is recalling certain 2012-2016 kia soul vehicles equipped with 1.6l gasoline direct injection (gdi) engines. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion and damage to one or more of the engine's pistons and possible piston connecting rod failure.
  kia will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the catalytic overheating protection engine control unit logic to prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. In addition, the catalytic converter will also be replaced if it has been damaged. Depending on the extent of any damage, the engine may also be replaced, free of charge. • Vehicle rollaway investigation # RQ23005

  On july 2, 2020, kia america inc. (kia) filed safety recall 20v-389 for model year (my) 2015-2016 kia soul ev vehicles. This recall was in response to allegations of unintended vehicle movement while in park and provided updated electronic control unit software for the electronic parking brake logic as the remedy. The updated logic, which was included during production for my 2017-2019 kia soul ev vehicles, automatically activates the electronic parking brake when the vehicle is powered off while the gear shift lever is in the park position. On september 10, 2023, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a recall query (rq23-005) to investigate allegations of unintended vehicle movement while in park in my 2015-2019 kia soul ev vehicles. At the time that the investigation was opened, odi had received 3 vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) and additional early warning reporting data involving reports of unintended vehicle movement in my 2017-2018 kia soul ev vehicles. One of the voqs submitted to odi reported a rollaway collision with a fire hydrant, which occurred after the operator had parked and exited the vehicle. Following the opening of this recall query, odi and kia participated in a joint inspection the vehicle which had been involved in a rollaway collision. During the inspection, the subject vehicle exhibited the alleged defect, rolling both forwards and backwards while shifted into park with the electronic parking brake not engaged. The subject vehicles electronic parking brake logic performed as designed during the inspection and the vehicle experienced no unintended movement while the electronic parking brake was engaged. In its november 21, 2023 response to odis information request, kia provided customer complaint and warranty claim data for 19 unique vins which relate to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles. Kia separately made odi aware of one additional allegation of vehicle rollaway that resulted in a collision with another vehicle. This collision was reported to kia following their cutoff date for the information request response. Kia stated that based on its investigation, the subject vehicles parking mechanism can be damaged if the gear shift lever is shifted to park prior to coming to a complete stop. If the parking mechanism is damaged and the electronic parking brake is not engaged, unintended vehicle movement while in park may occur. However, based on odis analysis of the available information, it is apparent that not all allegations of the subject defect which have been investigated by kia have had evidence that the parking mechanism was damaged. At this time, the root cause of the alleged defect is not yet confirmed. On october 19, 2023 kia filed safety recall 23v-724 for my 2015-2019 kia soul ev vehicles. The new recall remedy provides update electronic parking brake logic that automatically activates the electronic parking brake when the gear shift lever is in the park position, regardless of whether the vehicle is powered on or off. At this time, nhtsa has not received any reports of electronic parking brake failure for the subject vehicles, but will continue to monitor following this investigation. In view of the recall action being taken by kia, odi is closing this recall query. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. • Pedestrian alert sounds investigation # DP22005

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date.The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition.The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

• Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  In 2017, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two recall queries (rq17-003 and 004) following multiple recall actions initiated by hyundai and kia for “theta ii” engine-equipped vehicles. The rqs were opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of the recalls as well as the compliance of each company to meet their reporting requirements established under the motor vehicle safety act. Numerous violations of the requirements were found for both companies, and in on november 20, 2020, both companies entered into consent orders with nhtsa to resolve nhtsa’s assertions of violations of law. Both consent orders remain in effect.In 2018, the center for automotive safety (cas) petitioned the agency under defect petition (dp) 18-003 to investigate non-crash fires on various hyundai and kia models, citing 120 voqs alleging vehicle fires at varying points of origin and occurring under various non-crash related circumstances (including key-off fires). In opening dp18-003, odi noted that many of the 120 fire incidents appeared to originate in the engine compartment area and made reference to the two open rq investigations as likely pertinent. Odi issued information request (ir) letters to hyundai and kia and several peer oems in its efforts to properly evaluate and disposition cas’ petition.After reviewing responses to the dp requests, odi granted cas’ petition and in 2019 opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 and 19-004, one for each company) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai (sonata and santa fe) and kia (optima, sorento and soul) models. Odi issued additional, more broadly scoped ir letters to both hyundai and kia, which upon review, identified certain vehicle populations exhibiting higher rates of non-crash fires for various defects and points of origin, including some due to engine failure.To date, hyundai and kia have issued several recallsto address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failure involving various engine types (theta ii gdi, theta ii mpi, theta ii mpi hev, nu gdi, and gamma gdi). The remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement. Additionally, both manufacturers are installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure). Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). They have even replaced engines if the ksds software detects an impending engine failure.The 78 voqs cited above, which all involve fires likely due to engine failure, consist of 36 remedy-related and 42 scope-related incidents. The injury allegations involve eye and burn injuries not requiring medical treatment. With the 83 other voqs, odi is aware of 161 fires potentially due to engine failures. First, the investigation will continue to evaluate the scope of recalls initially begun under prior odi actions (see below), and will also include other recalls for fires due to engine failures, which hyundai and kia have subsequently launched (many influenced by odi investigations). Second, the investigation will monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the recall remedies for engine fire related recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.

It suddenly didn't want to turn and made me wreck it and bent the tie rods or something

Bought used nov2020. June 2021 took for a long road trip. Daily car use is less than 10 miles a day. So a long road trip should be fine. Got regularly scheduled oil change 1 month before trip, according to them no major problems with vehicle to take long drive. Drove over 1200 miles in a weekend, oil light came on, the check engine light immediately after. Stopped at gas station to put oil in allow to cool. Not over heating but wanted to allow to cool. Turned on car, check engine light and oil light still on. Then it went pop and i was stranded. It wouldn’t start.

The contact owns a 2016 kia soul. The contact stated that while turning on the vehicle as well as while driving, an oil odor was detected, a knocking sound was heard, and the vehicle was consuming excessive amounts of engine oil. The check engine light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who performed an oil change and stated that the catalytic converter was faulty. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer and the dealer performed a recall for the engine control unit (ecu) software update however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The contact stated that smoke was seen coming from under the hood while driving. The dealer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that she needed to pay for the diagnostic and since the recall repair was not performed in 2018, the dealer was not responsible for the engine replacement under nhtsa campaign number: 19v120000 (engine) for which the vin was included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer. The failure mileage was 146,630.

In 2020 kia motors america sent letters about a product improvement campaign. This 'campaign" was intended to update software for a knock sensor system (ksds) that detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive connecting rod bearing wear in the engine. Per letter "the ksds is designed to alert the vehicle driver at an early stage of bearing wear before the occurrence of severe engine damage including engine failure". I never received this letter. I never knew that there was a severe issue with my car, my check engine lights never came on. I took my car in to car pros kia in huntington beach a couple months ago for a transmission fluid change and they never told me anything was wrong or that this product improvement campaign was available. On 6/1/2021 my car died out of nowhere. I took the car to kia where they filed a claim for a new engine per the product improvement campaign but it was denied. Dan boyer, supervisor from kia motors america claims department told me the deadline was 4/16/21. This date isn't on any letter they sent. After searching, i realized that these letters are available for the public to view. I realized that one letter from 3/21/2020 states in bold underlined format "we would, however, like to assure you that there is no immediate need to have this software update performed". Clearly this is incorrect information, getting this software update is crucial-your engine will be damaged if the rod bearings are damaged as mine was. Kia motors expected me to bring my car, despite i never received a letter, i had no idea there was product improvement campaign surrounding this issue, and expected people to bring their car in for it in the middle of a pandemic. Now i can't go to work, my livelihood is at stake, and they want me to pay $6,000 out of pocket + any other fee associated without taking any responsibility on the matter. I'm seeking assistance in making things right, i'm looking for compensation, and awareness about this corporation.

The contact owns a 2016 kia soul. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, there was an abnormal cracking sound detected before the vehicle lost motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the steering gear and pinion plug needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was like nhtsa campaign number: 17v608000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure but declined to offer any repair assistance. The failure mileage was 70,055.

On a partly cloudy, warm day, i got in my vehicle and closed my driver door; upon the driver door closing, the rear passenger door window exploded, shattering all over the back seat and floor of the car.

Check engine light came on day before i took it in for kia recall 4/27/2021. It was off after service done. 2 weeks later light came on again and went off 5 days later. Light came on again 2 weeks later- i went auto zone and firestone to have code scan. Both scans showed code P050A----pcm has detected a problem with the idle air control. When i called montrose kia sheffield lake, ohio chris in service said they don't trust auto zone codes and wanted to charge me $129.99 for them to check code. He told me if the light was steady don't worry about and was very rude and unprofessional. While investigating code info online i found it was a known problem to kia and nothing could be done-problem in ecu logic -no fix-expecting software update. If i went to dealership who knows what they would of done and charged me for.

The contact owns a 2016 kia soul. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The vehicle shuddered and loss motive power. The contact restarted the vehicle and continued driving to the residence. An unknown warning light was illuminated when the vehicle was restarted. The contact had the vehicle towed to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine rod had fractured and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage 59,600.

I have a 2016 kia soul, base model 1.6l. Attaching recall notice, as i do not know the number (there have been 2 that i know of) after receiving product improvement campaign notice dated 4/6/2021, i notified my kia dealership in which i purchased the vehicle (7301 new lagrange rd, louisville ky 40222) and was told the next available appointment to do the recall update was 2 weeks from when i called, i asked if it was safe to drive since the recall is about engine fires and my engine light was on. I was told it would be fine, this was a "software update" but unfortunately, the rate at which my engine was burning oil, the day before my schedule recall appointment (5/11/21), my engine apparently blew while i was driving on the hwy. Prior to the smoke coming out the back, i heard clicking and then what seemed like something shooting out from the bottom of my car. The oil that i had put in (even though i was not due for an oil change) was leaking as they towed my kia to the dealership. I did not hear back about my car until i reached out for the 3rd time friday 5/14/21, where the tech told me i needed a replacement engine and kia motors will not cover it, stating it was because "there is an open recall for my engine and i had not had the recall completed" i have opened a case with kia customer affairs. Kia service center was unable to give me the date that the recall started.I do know that my car was serviced for a recall prior to this, 3/31/2020, in which there had been so much damage to the catalytic converter, it needed replaced. That was covered under the recall apparently, but for some reason this most recent recall is now showing that it is no longer open according to my vin on the nhtsa website. So the dealership must have cleared it, but still claims it was not completed so that they are refusing to replace my engine, quoting me $6.3k should be covered 100%
