CYLINDER HEAD STEEL BALL INSPECTION
AND INSTALLATION

 NOTICE
This bulletin has been revised to include additional information. New/revised
sections of this bulletin are indicated by a black bar in the margin area.
This Pitstop provides information regarding the inspection and installation of the steel sealing
ball on:



3.3L & 3.8L Lambda engines for 2007-2008MY Sorento (BL),
2.0L Nu engines for 2010-2019MY Soul (AM, PS), and
1.8L & 2.0L Nu engines for 2010-2018MY Forte (TD, YD/YDm), 2019MY~ Forte (BDm).
When replacing the cylinder heads on these engines, inspect the lubrication ports for
installation of the steel sealing balls. Current replacement cylinder heads may not be equipped
with the required steel balls. Identify and locate the nine (9) lubricant passages on 3.3L and
3.8L engines and three (3) on 1.8L and 2.0L engines and verify a steel ball is installed in each.
If any passages are not plugged, insert a steel ball and drive down until fully seated per
illustration / photos as shown. SST# 0K221 2M100 can be used.
Caution: Be careful not to damage any cylinder head sealing surfaces! Support the cylinder
head with suitable material; wood block or similar device.
Drive in steel ball with
drift punch.
Apply oil lubricant to the oil
passage and drive in the steel
ball with punch until fully seated.

Note: On 3.3L and 3.8L engines, there are a total of nine (9) steel balls installed, four (4) on
the R/H cylinder head and five (5) on the L/H cylinder head. On 1.8L and 2.0 engines, there
are a total of three (3) steel balls installed. See photos below.

Note: 2.0L Nu head shown above is for demonstration purposes only. Location of the lubrication ports
on a 1.8L Nu head may differ.
