• Recall 234844 [USA]: A battery electrical short-circuit increases the risk of a fire.
  Kia america, inc. (kia) is recalling certain 2015-2019 soul ev vehicles equipped with an e400 battery. The high-voltage battery pack may experience an electrical short-circuit while driving.
  dealers will update and/or replace the battery management system and software, as necessary, free of charge. The new software will illuminate the ev warning light, limit charging capacity, and reduce vehicle power if abnormal voltage is detected. If this occurs, the battery will be replaced, free of charge. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion and damage to one or more of the engine's pistons and possible piston connecting rod failure.
  kia will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the catalytic overheating protection engine control unit logic to prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. Kia is conducting this recall as a preventative measure to prevent fire risk due to potential fuel leaks, oil leaks and/or engine damage. In some situations, you may notice any of the following symptoms: there could be an abnormal knocking noise from the engine; the check engine light and/or the oil pressure warning light could turn on; you may smell fuel, burning or smoke; or you may notice oil leaks. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail and/or a fire could occur. An engine failure can cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: for the optima model, only the optima hybrid is affected by this recall. Safety risk: an engine compartment fire can create a risk of injury. A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective action: kia will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an inspection of the engine and engine compartment. The dealer will inspect for fuel and/or engine oil leaks, perform an engine test and make any repairs, including engine replacement, if necessary. • Vehicle rollaway investigation # RQ23005

  On july 2, 2020, kia america inc. (kia) filed safety recall 20v-389 for model year (my) 2015-2016 kia soul ev vehicles. This recall was in response to allegations of unintended vehicle movement while in park and provided updated electronic control unit software for the electronic parking brake logic as the remedy. The updated logic, which was included during production for my 2017-2019 kia soul ev vehicles, automatically activates the electronic parking brake when the vehicle is powered off while the gear shift lever is in the park position. On september 10, 2023, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a recall query (rq23-005) to investigate allegations of unintended vehicle movement while in park in my 2015-2019 kia soul ev vehicles. At the time that the investigation was opened, odi had received 3 vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) and additional early warning reporting data involving reports of unintended vehicle movement in my 2017-2018 kia soul ev vehicles. One of the voqs submitted to odi reported a rollaway collision with a fire hydrant, which occurred after the operator had parked and exited the vehicle. Following the opening of this recall query, odi and kia participated in a joint inspection the vehicle which had been involved in a rollaway collision. During the inspection, the subject vehicle exhibited the alleged defect, rolling both forwards and backwards while shifted into park with the electronic parking brake not engaged. The subject vehicles electronic parking brake logic performed as designed during the inspection and the vehicle experienced no unintended movement while the electronic parking brake was engaged. In its november 21, 2023 response to odis information request, kia provided customer complaint and warranty claim data for 19 unique vins which relate to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles. Kia separately made odi aware of one additional allegation of vehicle rollaway that resulted in a collision with another vehicle. This collision was reported to kia following their cutoff date for the information request response. Kia stated that based on its investigation, the subject vehicles parking mechanism can be damaged if the gear shift lever is shifted to park prior to coming to a complete stop. If the parking mechanism is damaged and the electronic parking brake is not engaged, unintended vehicle movement while in park may occur. However, based on odis analysis of the available information, it is apparent that not all allegations of the subject defect which have been investigated by kia have had evidence that the parking mechanism was damaged. At this time, the root cause of the alleged defect is not yet confirmed. On october 19, 2023 kia filed safety recall 23v-724 for my 2015-2019 kia soul ev vehicles. The new recall remedy provides update electronic parking brake logic that automatically activates the electronic parking brake when the gear shift lever is in the park position, regardless of whether the vehicle is powered on or off. At this time, nhtsa has not received any reports of electronic parking brake failure for the subject vehicles, but will continue to monitor following this investigation. In view of the recall action being taken by kia, odi is closing this recall query. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. • Pedestrian alert sounds investigation # DP22005

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date.The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition.The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

• Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  In 2017, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two recall queries (rq17-003 and 004) following multiple recall actions initiated by hyundai and kia for “theta ii” engine-equipped vehicles. The rqs were opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of the recalls as well as the compliance of each company to meet their reporting requirements established under the motor vehicle safety act. Numerous violations of the requirements were found for both companies, and in on november 20, 2020, both companies entered into consent orders with nhtsa to resolve nhtsa’s assertions of violations of law. Both consent orders remain in effect.In 2018, the center for automotive safety (cas) petitioned the agency under defect petition (dp) 18-003 to investigate non-crash fires on various hyundai and kia models, citing 120 voqs alleging vehicle fires at varying points of origin and occurring under various non-crash related circumstances (including key-off fires). In opening dp18-003, odi noted that many of the 120 fire incidents appeared to originate in the engine compartment area and made reference to the two open rq investigations as likely pertinent. Odi issued information request (ir) letters to hyundai and kia and several peer oems in its efforts to properly evaluate and disposition cas’ petition.After reviewing responses to the dp requests, odi granted cas’ petition and in 2019 opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 and 19-004, one for each company) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai (sonata and santa fe) and kia (optima, sorento and soul) models. Odi issued additional, more broadly scoped ir letters to both hyundai and kia, which upon review, identified certain vehicle populations exhibiting higher rates of non-crash fires for various defects and points of origin, including some due to engine failure.To date, hyundai and kia have issued several recallsto address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failure involving various engine types (theta ii gdi, theta ii mpi, theta ii mpi hev, nu gdi, and gamma gdi). The remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement. Additionally, both manufacturers are installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure). Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). They have even replaced engines if the ksds software detects an impending engine failure.The 78 voqs cited above, which all involve fires likely due to engine failure, consist of 36 remedy-related and 42 scope-related incidents. The injury allegations involve eye and burn injuries not requiring medical treatment. With the 83 other voqs, odi is aware of 161 fires potentially due to engine failures. First, the investigation will continue to evaluate the scope of recalls initially begun under prior odi actions (see below), and will also include other recalls for fires due to engine failures, which hyundai and kia have subsequently launched (many influenced by odi investigations). Second, the investigation will monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the recall remedies for engine fire related recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.

• Non-crash vehicle fires investigation # PE19004

  In a letter dated june 11, 2018, the center for auto safety (cas) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a safety defect investigation into non-collision related fires on model year (my) 2011-2014 kia optima and sorento, and hyundai sonata and santa fe vehicles.In a letter dated july 24, 2018, cas requested that my 2010-2015 kia soul vehicles be added to the petition.Cas stated that there is a higher number of complaints to nhtsa regarding non-crash fires on these vehicles compared to other similar vehicles.The office of defects investigation (odi) had already opened a recall query (rq17-003) on all kia vehicles equipped with theta ii engines for engine failures that may cause stalling and fires.The query covers most of the petition subject optima and sorento vehicles but not any of the subject soul vehicles.On august 21, 2018, odi opened a defect petition (dp18-003) to evaluate whether to grant or deny the cas petition.Odi sent information request letters to kia (september and october 2018) requesting information on all engine and non-engine related fires in the petition kia vehicles.Odi performed extensive analysis on the information obtained from kia.During the dp18-003 analysis, kia initiated three additional safety recalls related to engine compartment fires on certain petitioned and non-petitioned vehicles (nearly 500,000 total vehicles: recalls 18v-907, 19v-101, and 19v-120).Based on odi’s review of the applicable materials, including responses to information requests sent to multiple manufacturers, vehicle owner questionnaires (voq), and early warning data, nhtsa has decided to grant the petition.The petition is hereby granted.A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of alleged defects relating to non-collision vehicle fires in the 2011-2014 kia optima, 2011-2014 kia sorento, and 2010-2015 kia soul. While prior recalls of vehicles covered by this pe have primarily related to engine fires, nhtsa’s preliminary evaluation is not limited to engine components and may cover additional vehicle systems or components as well.Attached is a list of the reference numbers for the 244 voqs cited above.

Accelerator is beginning to catch at three distinct points when pressed halfway down or greater. The accelerator seems bent and proceeding in accordance with these recall codes: nhtsa 15v123000 and kia sc116. These codes are for 2014-2015 kia souls manufactured until january 8, 2015; mine is a 2015 kia soul but was manufactured shortly after that date. There were no indicator lights related to this issue. Weston kia in gresham, or refused to even examine the issue without a $130 diagnosis, guaranteeing nothing but diagnosis--then i'd pay for parts and labor--despite them being aware of this issue with 2015 kia souls. I contacted kia directly while at the dealer and they refused to cover the diagnosis fee or acknowledge the recall being for the same model year. Customer service said, and i quote, "well if the pedal falls off, make sure to take it in for service." i couldn't help but laugh at her.

I purchased my car in march of 2020. A month after i had my car the brake pads wore out with no indication and the calipers broke. I called kia and explained what the issue was. They tried to blame my mechanic. I told them that their technicians had to have known the brake pads were low if they did a thorough inspection. I was laughed at. I told the man that i was going to report them to the better business bureau. He then told me to bring it to kia. I told him it was at my mechanics and i no longer trusted their technicians to do the work on my car. Had my breaks failed i could've had a very serious accident. June 24, 2021. I had my intake gasket repaired by my mechanic. My car drove fine until i was exiting the highway. It started to lose power. I barely made it off the highway when it stopped. I contacted my mechanic and they were able to get it started to get it back to the shop. After he took a further look at it, he advised me to contact kia to run a diagnostic which i did. They charged me $80. They then confirmed what my mechanic stated the issue was. Kia wanted to charge me over $1000 for the work. I don't trust them to do the work as well as not having the money. My mechanic repaired the vehicle but it was still doing the same thing. He spent hours trying to figure out what the issue was. He told me kia needed to find the issue. I contacted kia on july 7th and spoke to jack in their service department. I asked him to have his technicians call my mechanic so they could figure it out. Jack took my information and my mechanic's information and said he would have them call. No one called. I called back that same day around 3:45pm. First jack told me they were busy. I told him so was my mechanic. He then said they don't normally have technicians speak to mechanics. I told jack he should've told me that when i spoke to him previously. By that point i was very angry. I told him they need to fix my car and i wasn't paying for it and i won't.

My 2015 kia soul had a recall for the catalytic converter, which i was never informed of. My check engine light came on and i took it to get checked, they told me the trouble, my husband was a mechanic so he checked id there were recalls and to find out there was one on the catalytic converter, i took it to the dealership of march in 2021, they fix the catalytic converter and changed it. Only to find out that my entire engine was ruined because of the damage from the catalytic converter. My car stalled on the freeway going 65 miles an hour with my daughter in the car. We were almost hit by a semi truck, i took it back down to the dealership after the check engine light came on told them it was stalling. They charge me for a fuel sensor and said that was the problem. I took a back down to the dealership because it was continuing to saul after that, call the recall center for kia and i was told by a representative that i would be getting a new engine. When i went down to the dealership to get the new engine they told me that was incorrect and i have still not gotten my car back after two days. The dealership has yet to call me either to tell me what exactly is the issue with my car

My car started making a loud noise and the car would not accelerate as i was returning home on the highway. I was driving home on i-75 south when my car started to slow down and it was very hard to accelerate and was making a loud noise. I made it to the next exit off sharonville rd and made it into a gas station. I opened the hood to check the oil and it was extremely hot and smoking. I had to wait until it cooled off and put in some oil to try to make it on home. The check oil light was not lit which didn't even provide any indication that my car was out of oil during the 1/2 hour drive. I do not feel safe to drive this car, since this incident. I took it for auto repair immediately the next day. Please help with assistance with this issue.

The connecting rod bearing failed resulting in the engine failing. The engine is still in the car at the dealership awaiting approval from kia to replace it (they are currently refusing). The engine failing while the vehicle was being operated placed me and other motorist in danger had i not been able to get it off the road immediately. The connecting rod bearing failure was confirmed by the dealership. No, the vehicle has not been inspected by anyone else besides the service techs at the dealership. It is unknown if any warning lamps or messages appeared before the failure.

The contact's daughter owns a 2015 kia soul. The contact stated while her daughter was driving 45 mph when she heard abnormal noise and saw smoke exiting from the front of the vehicle. The contact stated multiple warning lights were illuminated. The driver was able to park on the side of the road. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The driver called the local dealer and was referred to the manufacturer. The vin was associated with nhtsa campaign number: 20v750000 (engine). The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and they would not honor the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 101,027.

I was driving and check engine light went on , drove to pride kia where this car was purchased. Before check engine light went on car started to decrease in acceleration. And some smoke could be seen once or twice upon acceleration. Car has been at pride kia for 15 days and have not been told what the problem is. This 2015 kia soul was was taken in at pride kia for a product improvement on december 2020. And on february 2021, there was a recall sc200, to check engine. Currently there are two recalls for a 2015 kia soul. One is for a catalytic converter 19v120000. The problems described in this recall are very similar to the problems of the kia soul i drive. Also, recall 20v750000, is similar to the engine problems of my kia soul. Upon inquiring about the kia soul engine problems, i was informed that it seems likely it could be catalytic problem since the check engine light is blinking, this demonstrates a catalytic problem and not a sensor problem. The stalling of the engine also has taken place when the isg feature is on. I asked the pride kia dealer service department and they said keep driving it nothing. Thank you, al dicenso

The contact stated that while her daughter was driving there was an undetermined abnormal sound detected. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer but was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

2015 kia soul's oil has been changed every 3k miles and has been well maintained. Check engine light came on on 4/7/21, and burning smell and vehicle was taken to service. Code showed catalytic converter but no open recalls for anything else. Service did not show that a product improvement notice was open nor was my daughter notified in writing of that open notice. Last night the vehicle lost all oil, threw a rod and the engine blew up with no explosion, fortunately. Kia says that will not cover the engine replacement yet it appears that the national highway traffic safety administration indicated that there is a recall for this issue with a number of vehicles actually catching fire. The vehicle is now at a dealership in nashville, tn but they say the replacement is not covered. Request nhtsa involvement in helping resolve this with kia.
