Test Drive:
The test drive is a critical part of the PDI. Not all test drive routes are equally suited to confirm
proper operations of a new vehicle and/or to flush out any imperfections. It has been found that
this aspect of the PDI varies greatly among dealers, and to consistently get the most value from
the test drive, the drive route should be standardized as much as possible.
A good test route will also quickly offer a frame of reference; behavior of any vehicle being
tested can then easily be compared with how other units behaved under the same
circumstances. Additionally, an alternative route should be established if (for traffic or other
reasons) the preferred or standard route is at times not available or unsuitable. PDI test drive
route(s) need to include the following:







Total minimum distance and/or time required (5-10 miles/ 10+ minutes) & log mileage out/in
Flat smooth road with speed of 60 mph (Drift/pull and steering wheel alignment check)
Rough road at 15-20 mph (squeak & rattle evaluation)
Uphill and downhill road from 0-40 mph (upshift and down shift shock)
60 mph asphalt road at steady speed (wind noise leak)
Speed bump at 5-10 mph ( suspension noise check)
Smooth asphalt for brake operation evaluation (including noise)
Dealers should post map in conspicuous area for easy reference.
Additionally during PDI, if there is any uncertainly regarding item check procedures, a PreDelivery Inspection Description Sheet is available for download on KGIS.
