• Recall 248608 [USA]: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  Kia america, inc. (kia) is recalling certain 2010-2019 borrego, 2014-2016 cadenza, 2010-2013 forte, forte koup, sportage, 2015-2018 k900, 2011-2015 optima, 2011-2013 optima hybrid, soul, 2012-2017 rio, 2011-2014 sorento, and 2010-2011 rondo vehicles. The hydraulic electronic control unit (hecu) may experience an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
  owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the hecu fuse, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed november 14, 2023. The first owner notification letters were mailed march 29, 2024. Kia will continue a phased mailing as the remedy becomes available for different makes and model vehicles. Owners may contact kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. • Hyundai and kia abs module fires investigation # AQ23002

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received eight hyundai motor america (hyundai) and eight kia america, inc. (kia) part 573 recall reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (abs) modules or hydraulic electronic control units (hecu) manufactured by the equipment supplier mando. The part 573 recall reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by mando. Safety recalls included in this audit query (aq) review include: hyundai recalls 20v-520, 20v-543, 21v-161, 21v-160, 21v-303, 22v-056, 22v-810, and 23v-651. Kia recalls 16v-815, 20v-518, 20v-519, 21v-137, 21v-331, 22v-051, 22v-800, and 23v-652 the purpose of this aq is to evaluate the timeliness and scoping of hyundai and kia’s defect decision making and adherence with reporting requirements; and understand the varying defect descriptions and remedies between these recalls.

• Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  In 2017, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two recall queries (rq17-003 and 004) following multiple recall actions initiated by hyundai and kia for “theta ii” engine-equipped vehicles. The rqs were opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of the recalls as well as the compliance of each company to meet their reporting requirements established under the motor vehicle safety act. Numerous violations of the requirements were found for both companies, and in on november 20, 2020, both companies entered into consent orders with nhtsa to resolve nhtsa’s assertions of violations of law. Both consent orders remain in effect.In 2018, the center for automotive safety (cas) petitioned the agency under defect petition (dp) 18-003 to investigate non-crash fires on various hyundai and kia models, citing 120 voqs alleging vehicle fires at varying points of origin and occurring under various non-crash related circumstances (including key-off fires). In opening dp18-003, odi noted that many of the 120 fire incidents appeared to originate in the engine compartment area and made reference to the two open rq investigations as likely pertinent. Odi issued information request (ir) letters to hyundai and kia and several peer oems in its efforts to properly evaluate and disposition cas’ petition.After reviewing responses to the dp requests, odi granted cas’ petition and in 2019 opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 and 19-004, one for each company) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai (sonata and santa fe) and kia (optima, sorento and soul) models. Odi issued additional, more broadly scoped ir letters to both hyundai and kia, which upon review, identified certain vehicle populations exhibiting higher rates of non-crash fires for various defects and points of origin, including some due to engine failure.To date, hyundai and kia have issued several recallsto address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failure involving various engine types (theta ii gdi, theta ii mpi, theta ii mpi hev, nu gdi, and gamma gdi). The remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement. Additionally, both manufacturers are installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure). Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). They have even replaced engines if the ksds software detects an impending engine failure.The 78 voqs cited above, which all involve fires likely due to engine failure, consist of 36 remedy-related and 42 scope-related incidents. The injury allegations involve eye and burn injuries not requiring medical treatment. With the 83 other voqs, odi is aware of 161 fires potentially due to engine failures. First, the investigation will continue to evaluate the scope of recalls initially begun under prior odi actions (see below), and will also include other recalls for fires due to engine failures, which hyundai and kia have subsequently launched (many influenced by odi investigations). Second, the investigation will monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the recall remedies for engine fire related recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.

Last night, my car ran exactly as usual. No warning lights on the dash. No strange sounds. This morning when i started the car, there was a weird ticking sound coming from the engine. I decided to take the car into the shop. About a mile from home, it began to have trouble with acceleration and would randomly stall for a fraction of a second before catching again. The ticking sound became unbearable just as the check engine light and oil level lights turned on, so i pulled over and called a tow truck. After inspection at the auto shop, my beloved car was diagnosed with premature engine failure. The mechanic explained that this engine consumed oil rather than just using it to lubricate the moving parts, meaning that even religious oil changes are not enough. Had i continued driving instead of calling a tow, my car likely would have caught fire! Now i have no car (well a car but no engine) and because i am the second owner, the warranty doesn't apply to me. I have been a loyal kia and hyundai owner despite bad publicity over the years because i saw major improvements and innovative growth in the company. Kia tells me that because there is no active recall on the engine and i don't qualify for the warranty, there's nothing they can do. Please note they are actively involved in a lawsuit with the goal of recalling the 1.6l gamma engines in kia rio 2015 for this very reason! There are a small percentage of defective engines that pose a fire risk in these cars. Raising awareness by contacting the company directly and reporting to nhtsa is the only way that kia/hyundai might do something about it!

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 kia rio. While driving 60-65 mph on the freeway, the vehicle started to jerk and a loud grinding noise was heard without warning. The contact managed to exit the freeway onto a residential street where the contact noticed smoke under the hood. Suddenly, there was a loud explosion under the hood and the contact's head impacted the steering wheel. The vehicle became engulfed with black smoke. The contact sustained a busted lip, bruised eye, a whiplash, and a concussion. Medical attention was not receive as of yet. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed by an independent mechanic to a lot. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The cause of the failure was not determined. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000. The vin was unknown.

I was driving to work, hand heard a pop under my hood. My engine and battery indicator lights started flashing and i lost all power. After polling over and turning my car off, i noticed a tone of smoke coming from under the hood. I popped the hood latch and peaked under with out opening the hood after seeing light. I noticed the flames and grabbed my phone to call 911. Soon after the car was engulfed inflames and 3 bangs where heard. Both tires and i'm guessing the fuel line erupted. The front half of my car was now ablaze starting to reach the interior started to burn before the fire department could put the fire out.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 kia rio. While driving 40 mph and approaching another vehicle's blind spot, the contact pressed the horn, but it failed to function. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to carworld (located at 11916 prairie ave, hawthorne, ca 90250, (833) 219-9951), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 87,241.

Takara recall i was hit on the driver's side of my car by a semi doing approximately 58 mph in doing so my car went into a spin and the back of my car hit a concrete bridge, on a 2 lane interstate. My air bags did not deploy!

'tamara recall' my car drive gear has twice slipped into 'shift gear... 1st, 2nd, along with a noticeable lou day sound: usually i put car in drive or reversal, then drive. I didn't know what was going on; then 2nd time i notice near speed, it showed numbers instead of d for drive. Vechile was in motion, i pulled into a restaurant parking lot. Cut car off and started car up again. All was good. 1st time i drove to got home didn't know what was going on.

My engine caught on fire as i was driving the car. There was a knock sensor error discovered a couple hours before, but nothing was indicating that there was imminent critical danger.

Driving approximately 40 mph, car hesitates to accelerate. Check engine light came on. Had car checked, diagnostic says catalytic converter is not operating properly. I had this part replaced less than 4 months ago! Now the same problem is occurring again!
