• Recall 248586 [USA]: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  Kia america, inc. (kia) is recalling certain 2010-2019 borrego, 2014-2016 cadenza, 2010-2013 forte, forte koup, sportage, 2015-2018 k900, 2011-2015 optima, 2011-2013 optima hybrid, soul, 2012-2017 rio, 2011-2014 sorento, and 2010-2011 rondo vehicles. The hydraulic electronic control unit (hecu) may experience an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
  owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the hecu fuse, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed november 14, 2023. The first owner notification letters were mailed march 29, 2024. • Recall 141136 [USA]: Piston damage may result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. a broken connecting rod may puncture the engine block allowing engine oil to escape. the leaking oil may contact the exhaust, increasing the risk of a fire.
  Kia motors america (kia) is recalling certain 2012-2016 kia soul vehicles equipped with 1.6l gasoline direct injection (gdi) engines. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion and damage to one or more of the engine's pistons and possible piston connecting rod failure.
  kia will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the catalytic overheating protection engine control unit logic to prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. In addition, the catalytic converter will also be replaced if it has been damaged. Depending on the extent of any damage, the engine may also be replaced, free of charge. • Recall 107885 [USA]: A detached headliner plate may increase the risk of injury to the occupant during a vehicle crash.
  Kia motors america (kia) is recalling certain model year 2010-2013 kia soul vehicles manufactured january 8, 2009, to october 2, 2013, equipped with a sun roof. A headliner plate may detach during deployment of the curtain air bag.

  Issue: kia canada is conducting a product improvement campaign that provides an update to the engine control module to detect potential problems before an engine fails. An engine failure could cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: this campaign only affects vehicles equipped with a 1.6 l gdi engine. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. An engine failure could also create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: kia will notify owners by mail. • Recall 2019101 [Canada]: Engine
  Issue: on certain vehicles, the catalytic converter may be damaged by overheating. This could also cause engine damage or an engine failure. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. An engine failure may also result in a fire. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the engine software updated. This update will prevent overheating of the catalytic converter. Vehicles will also be inspected for other damage. Depending on the results of the inspection, the catalytic converter and/or the engine may be replaced. Note: a driver may notice any of the following symptoms of this problem: a knocking sound from the engine, reduced power or hesitation, and/or the illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp (mil) or check engine light.

• Recall 2017469 [Canada]: Seats and restraints
  On certain vehicles equipped with heated cloth seats, over time, the wiring for the seat heater mats could become damaged. If a heating mat were to be damaged, it could melt a small hole in the lower portion of the seat base or backrest, which could result in injury to the seat occupant. Correction: dealers will attach a patch on the seat cushion and seat back heater bridge side and adjust the positioning. If there are traces of burning or melting during the inspection, dealers will replace the heater with a new one and adjust the bridge wire side positioning.

• Hyundai and kia abs module fires investigation # AQ23002

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received eight hyundai motor america (hyundai) and eight kia america, inc. (kia) part 573 recall reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (abs) modules or hydraulic electronic control units (hecu) manufactured by the equipment supplier mando. The part 573 recall reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by mando. Safety recalls included in this audit query (aq) review include: hyundai recalls 20v-520, 20v-543, 21v-161, 21v-160, 21v-303, 22v-056, 22v-810, and 23v-651. Kia recalls 16v-815, 20v-518, 20v-519, 21v-137, 21v-331, 22v-051, 22v-800, and 23v-652 the purpose of this aq is to evaluate the timeliness and scoping of hyundai and kia’s defect decision making and adherence with reporting requirements; and understand the varying defect descriptions and remedies between these recalls.

• Loss of motive power investigation # DP22003

  The national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) received a letter dated july 13, 2022, petitioning the agency to initiate a safety defect investigation into loss of motive power allegations attributed to oil drain pan assembly failures on certain hyundai motor america, inc. And kia america, inc. Vehicles spanning model years (my) 2005-2021. The petitioners cited examples of complaints indicating that the subject vehicles were experiencing rapid loss of engine oil due to oil drain plug back outs, resulting in loss of motive power and/or catastrophic engine damage. Additional complaints were provided which alleged that the oil drain pans lack sufficient structural integrity and are susceptible to cracking. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745. On september 12, 2022, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened defect petition (dp22-003) to evaluate the petitioners’ request. The petitioners have provided additional complaints within four supplemental letters dated january 31, 2023, march 21, 2023, may 23, 2023, and august 4, 2023. Odi’s evaluation included the review and analysis of the complaints and supporting information submitted by the petitioners, as well as additional complaints submitted directly to nhtsa which referenced either the oil drain plug or a crack in the oil pan. After reviewing the available data, odi has not identified evidence that would support opening a defect investigation into the oil drain pan assemblies of the subject vehicles. Based on a review of the available information, a loss of motive power resulting from an oil drain plug back out has not occurred between the initial sale of a vehicle and the completion of its first oil change. If during an oil change service, a technician fails to remove the existing drain plug gasket before installing a new gasket, it is likely that a proper seal between the drain plug and the oil pan will not be made. An improper seal between the drain plug and oil pan could lead to the backing out on the drain plug, resulting in the sudden loss of oil while driving. Additionally, the provided examples of oil pan cracks were localized to the immediate vicinity of the oil drain plug and/or appeared to be the result of direct-contact with a tool during servicing.  there is no information to support that a vehicle-based defect exists relating to the oil pan assembly, and instead the documented incidents are related to the failure to follow the proper maintenance procedures during oil change service. In october 2023, hyundai published a technical service bulletin (tsb) that provided detailed instructions for oil change service on its gasoline powered vehicles, specifically highlighting the need to remove and replace the existing drain plug gasket prior to reinstalling the drain plug. After a thorough review of the material submitted by the petitioner, the information already in nhtsas possession, and the potential risks to motor vehicle safety implicated by the petitioners allegations, nhtsa does not believe that a formal investigation is warranted. Therefore, the petition is denied. A federal register notice (frn) further detailing nhtsa’s reasons for denial of the petition will be published. • Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  In 2017, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two recall queries (rq17-003 and 004) following multiple recall actions initiated by hyundai and kia for “theta ii” engine-equipped vehicles. The rqs were opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of the recalls as well as the compliance of each company to meet their reporting requirements established under the motor vehicle safety act. Numerous violations of the requirements were found for both companies, and in on november 20, 2020, both companies entered into consent orders with nhtsa to resolve nhtsa’s assertions of violations of law. Both consent orders remain in effect.In 2018, the center for automotive safety (cas) petitioned the agency under defect petition (dp) 18-003 to investigate non-crash fires on various hyundai and kia models, citing 120 voqs alleging vehicle fires at varying points of origin and occurring under various non-crash related circumstances (including key-off fires). In opening dp18-003, odi noted that many of the 120 fire incidents appeared to originate in the engine compartment area and made reference to the two open rq investigations as likely pertinent. Odi issued information request (ir) letters to hyundai and kia and several peer oems in its efforts to properly evaluate and disposition cas’ petition.After reviewing responses to the dp requests, odi granted cas’ petition and in 2019 opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 and 19-004, one for each company) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai (sonata and santa fe) and kia (optima, sorento and soul) models. Odi issued additional, more broadly scoped ir letters to both hyundai and kia, which upon review, identified certain vehicle populations exhibiting higher rates of non-crash fires for various defects and points of origin, including some due to engine failure.To date, hyundai and kia have issued several recallsto address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failure involving various engine types (theta ii gdi, theta ii mpi, theta ii mpi hev, nu gdi, and gamma gdi). The remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement. Additionally, both manufacturers are installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure). Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). They have even replaced engines if the ksds software detects an impending engine failure.The 78 voqs cited above, which all involve fires likely due to engine failure, consist of 36 remedy-related and 42 scope-related incidents. The injury allegations involve eye and burn injuries not requiring medical treatment. With the 83 other voqs, odi is aware of 161 fires potentially due to engine failures. First, the investigation will continue to evaluate the scope of recalls initially begun under prior odi actions (see below), and will also include other recalls for fires due to engine failures, which hyundai and kia have subsequently launched (many influenced by odi investigations). Second, the investigation will monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the recall remedies for engine fire related recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.

• Non-crash vehicle fires investigation # PE19004

  In a letter dated june 11, 2018, the center for auto safety (cas) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a safety defect investigation into non-collision related fires on model year (my) 2011-2014 kia optima and sorento, and hyundai sonata and santa fe vehicles.In a letter dated july 24, 2018, cas requested that my 2010-2015 kia soul vehicles be added to the petition.Cas stated that there is a higher number of complaints to nhtsa regarding non-crash fires on these vehicles compared to other similar vehicles.The office of defects investigation (odi) had already opened a recall query (rq17-003) on all kia vehicles equipped with theta ii engines for engine failures that may cause stalling and fires.The query covers most of the petition subject optima and sorento vehicles but not any of the subject soul vehicles.On august 21, 2018, odi opened a defect petition (dp18-003) to evaluate whether to grant or deny the cas petition.Odi sent information request letters to kia (september and october 2018) requesting information on all engine and non-engine related fires in the petition kia vehicles.Odi performed extensive analysis on the information obtained from kia.During the dp18-003 analysis, kia initiated three additional safety recalls related to engine compartment fires on certain petitioned and non-petitioned vehicles (nearly 500,000 total vehicles: recalls 18v-907, 19v-101, and 19v-120).Based on odi’s review of the applicable materials, including responses to information requests sent to multiple manufacturers, vehicle owner questionnaires (voq), and early warning data, nhtsa has decided to grant the petition.The petition is hereby granted.A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of alleged defects relating to non-collision vehicle fires in the 2011-2014 kia optima, 2011-2014 kia sorento, and 2010-2015 kia soul. While prior recalls of vehicles covered by this pe have primarily related to engine fires, nhtsa’s preliminary evaluation is not limited to engine components and may cover additional vehicle systems or components as well.Attached is a list of the reference numbers for the 244 voqs cited above.

Engine failure on 2012 kia soul gdi engine on june 21, 2021. Crankshaft had been replaced last year by a kia dealership under tsb po335, for which i was charged $427.29. I had never been advised of any potential problems with this vehicle's engine nor advised of any alternative measures to prevent the loss. Engine failed in heavy traffic. Triple aaa mechanic gave a diagnosis of engine failure and suggested engine replacement. No one has inspected the vehicle other than the aaa mechanic in asheville, nc. No warning lamps came on to indicate a problem.

Knocking in the steering column lead to steering coupling being damaged. Steering failed when driving over speeds of 65. Almost died. No warning. Auto body shop explained noise

I received a recall letter that was dated on april 6,2021 from kia that my car needed to come in for update to the engine to protect from excessive rod bearing damage. Upon getting the car from the college campus and on the way to bring it back into the area to get the work done, it blew the engine. Kia is now stating that they will not take care of the problem since i wasn't able to get the car there to have the work done before the damage happened. The engine blew on may 1,2021 less than a month after their letter was drafted. This is a car that has always been dealer maintained and has always been kept up on its repairs. They told me that they didn't even look into the history of the car and just said that it was my fault for not making it in to the shop, even through that's where i was getting it to. They in their letter state that had i been able to get the car in it would have extended the warranty to 150,000 miles, the car only has 107,000 on it when this happened. Even through they sent a letter stating that they sold me a car with faulty parts now they won't cover the damage. Damage that luckily didn't end in a major accident but did total my car. The car was traveling at 75 miles per hour on the highway when the rod broke off and went thru the side of the engine.

The engine is making a ticking noise and the steering wheel is clicking when i turned the steering wheel also had 3 open recalls. Took it to all star kia in san bernardino for 3 recalls and they refused to work on the vehicle because they said they were not comfortable working on the car, they also stated that the ticking sound was not related to the recall even though i told them i saw on the nhtsa website that due to catalytic coverter overheating it could cause rod knock. I even told them the recall was sc176.

It continues to have these problems intermittently. When a diagnostic tool was hooked up to it, it brought up the following codes: P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold), P0336 (crankshaft position sensor "a" circuit range/performance. I believe this may be related to recall #19v120000.
