P0335

Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction

DTC P0335, sometimes indicated as P033500 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the ignition system causing crankshaft position sensor a circuit malfunction.

The crankshaft position sensor is responsible for reading the position of the crankshaft and sending that information to the engine control unit. This sensor is important for the correct operation of the engine and if it fails, the engine may not start, run rough, or have other performance issues.
There are a few common causes of a crankshaft position sensor failure, including:
-A faulty crankshaft position sensor
-A faulty engine control unit
-A faulty wiring harness
-A faulty ignition coil
If you suspect that your crankshaft position sensor is not working correctly, you can test it by using a scan tool. If the scan tool reading is not consistent with the actual position of the crankshaft, then the sensor is likely bad and needs to be replaced.

Consumer Complaints for this DTC

2018 JEEP COMPASS with 600.0 miles

Engine shut off without warning while driving on interstate highway. Received messages service transmission and service engine. Coasted to stop on shoulder of road. Car would not restart for about 10 minutes. Checked codes afterwards; shows P0339 crankshaft position sensor a circuit intermittent and P0335 crankshaft position sensor a circuit. This presents a serious safety issue when car engine stops without warning.

The 2017 Dodge Journey stalls intermittently at all speeds and driving conditions. Stop and go in traffic, accelerating on the highway, coasting up a hill, starting from a stop in an intersection. Usually no codes are thrown. Recently the P0335 code was thrown, crankshaft speed sensor was replaced. Did not fix the problem. The 2016 Journey's were recalled for the same issue. Are the 2017's not worthy of a recall or does someone have to die first?

2017 DODGE JOURNEY with 29660.0 miles

This is a follow-up to 11244334 and 11243797. For background, the 2017 Journey began stalling intermittently and not throwing a code (starting at about 23,500 miles). The stalling occurred during all driving conditions and speeds. The dealership could not reproduce the event and told me to drive until it throws a code. After 6,000 miles and hundreds of stalls the vehicle finally threw a code, (29,500 miles, P0335 crankshaft position sensor). The sensor replaced, connector did not fit sensor well so it was replaced (subject of complaint 11244334). Thought it was fixed, and three days later, it stalled again on the highway. Only this time the traction light came on and brakes did not work intermittently. Back at the dealership, the technician in his frustration and opened the wiring harness. What he found about 8 inches from the connector was "crank shaft position wires cut and twisted together..." the service advisor asked who else was in there. I bought the vehicle new at the dealership and they have done all work and maintenance meaning this issue was in production.

2016 DODGE JOURNEY with 15000.0 miles

My 2016 Dodge Journey experienced a crankshaft position sensor "a" circuit malfunction (obd code P0335) while i was driving, resulting in an engine stall and total loss of power. Nearly resulted in a crash. I've since observed from other drivers that this is a very common failure on the Dodge Journey, and a serious safety issue. A recall for this problem (safety recall s89 / nhtsa 16v-907) was issued in february 2017, but applies only to a limited number of vehicles built from may to july 2016. Based on my own experience and that of other owners as reported online, i believe the issue is more widespread than the nhtsa apparently believes, and i suggest that the existing recall be expanded considerably.

I was traveling on the highway when the vehicle suddenly, without warning, stalled and stopped running. I was able to cruise until the vehicle completely stopped. I was able to restart the engine by pushing the "start" button to off and then pushing my brake and the engine restarted successfully where i can drive to the shoulder off the road. Engine light turned on. I have a obd scanner tool and the code that the tool read is P0335 crankshaft position sensor malfunction. Circuit a. I have about 52,000 miles on my odometer. This is a huge safety issue. At high speed, if the car stalls, this could lead to a significant accident. There was no warning prior to the engine stalling. I have a service appointment at marino cjd next week. Marino cjd is located at 5133 w irving park rd, chicago, il 60641.

2015 DODGE JOURNEY with 68000.0 miles

Repeated system low voltage issues, vehicle stalls while driving - does not matter the speed - it has done it at 50 - 60 miles a hour rendering power brakes and steering useless. Stalls at red lights or stop signs while moving or still. It is worse during cold and rainy conditions. Vehicle will eventually start back up after about 20 minutes of being stranded. Yesterday during pouring down rain and cold it stalled at a busy intersection repeated attempts to start unsuccessful finally after about 20 minutes of blocking traffic in the intersection it finally started and i was able to move out of the intersection. Error codes read P0562 system voltage low and P0335 crankshaft position sensor a circuit. There is a recall on 2016 Dodge Journey for the crankshaft camshaft sensor wire harness but not the 2015. Best i can tell the internet is riddled with numerous Dodge Journey's with these symptoms! Someone needs to investigate this issue and fix it for us! The expense that consumers are encountering is unacceptable especially since they are not resolving the issues. This is a safety hazard and the liability that Dodge will have should consumers continue to be hurt because this continued issue will be bad should class action law suit come because of this.

Since the recalls and technical bulletins all appear to have been "completed" for this vehicle i guess i can look forward to repeating the same problematic repairs again and again for the remainder of the time that i own this vehicle which do not appear to have resolved but merely band aided away until they reappear. Even the drivers door switches all had to be replaced which tells me that this is related to an electrical problem and with so many complaints the matter had forced consumers to pay for repairs that were designed to fail without regard to the consumers safety nor financial burdens. It appears that the electrical issues which most are directly linked to the defective engine wiring harness and grounding issues as many technicians are reporting. At this point the truck needs to be totaled.

Tried moving the gas pump in different positions but still won't fill. Gas ends up bubbling and overflows even though the tank is only at a quarter tank. Looks like this is very common with Jeep Compasses. It's either the fuel tank transfer tube or need to get the whole gas tank replaced.

According to the obd code reader: code P0335, $07e8 generic. Crankshaft position sensor a circuit. Vehicle has trouble starting. The tachometer falls to 0 as opposed to sitting at a higher idle, and does not move when pressing foot on gas pedal when stationary or in motion. When in motion, there can be temporary loss of power, the inability to shift gears, and/or the vehicle shakes and rattles. This happens on city streets and highways, when in all types of traffic and when moving at constant speeds. When this situation happens, the car does not shift gears at all and must be restarted. This has caused dangerous lane changing to highway shoulders as well as difficult attempts back onto the roadways during rush hour.

My 2009 Gmc yukon xl has had multiple issues with the "reduced power" message. Not only is this affecting the driveability of our vehicle but also the safety of my family since this is our family car and my wife usually is driving it with out four children in it. It all started in august when the reduced power message came on for my wife with service stabilitrac and traction control, while she was driving our kids to school. The dealer said it was "rodent damage" to the throttle body wiring and replaced the connector. About a month later the same exact thing happened when she was going home from the kids school. The code that was scanned was P0335 crankshaft position sensor failure. The crankshaft position sensor was unplugged and reseated and the lights went away. On 10/6 the lights and reduced power message came back on, too the vehicle to the dealership and they could not find any issues "no defect found" tac case # [xxx]. This has been an ongoing issue and with the chance of my wife and kids being stranded in the middle of no where or broke down on the side of the road is not something that i want from a car that is still under warranty! Not only is this car dangerous but also a headache! I called gm customer service and the regional representative told me that if the car is not doing anything right now then there is nothing they can do for me. 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix engine will automatically stop running when driving. This shuts down the power steering, brakes, etc. This has happened about a dozen times over the last year. All but two times when this happened, we were able to put the car in neutral and restart the car. Two of the times, the car did not want to start - car would crank but not start. Eventually we were able to get the car stated. Over the past year this happened when we were driving in a city at approximate 30 mph, coasting down a hill, or stopped at a stop sign. However, we did not take this car on the highway very often so we have not had this issue happen on the highway. So far, we have been lucky and had no accidents with the car. Symptom's are very similar to the gm ignition switch recall. We took the car to two repair places and the diagnostics would not show anything. We recently took the car to a gm dealer and they ran a diagnostics and they determined crankshaft position sensor code P0335. They replaced 10456161 sensor and emissions system repair. They are not 100% sure that this will fix the problem. This is a very dangerous situation and we do not allow our kids to drive the car for fear of them being killed in an accident.

At that moment the engine totally stalled ,. Finally i was able to reach the extreme right line and pull out waiting for a complete stop. I tried to restart the engine but no help. I did not believe it but wanted be sure that no lack of fuel was the origin because i already had the problem with fuel sending unit problem which do not work properly to accurately show how much fuel is on the fuel tank. I got some extra fuel. We returned and poured the 1 gallon can , then i tried to star the engine. It cranked but no starting. I called my insurance requesting towing service . I tried two more times and after that the engine started roughly and hesitating. After 2 minutes and stabilized i decided to continue. I called my insurance company to cancel the towing service . Decided to continue on i-45 but on the extreme right hand side line. I arrived home with no other issues and after parking on my driveway, shut down the engine, then i tried to restart it but nothing . Only cranking good but no starting at all. Finally after some like 10 seconds of cranking, the engine hesitated but started. I took it to autozone , they scanned it and gave me the codes p043 for the failed fuel sendin unit ( fuel level sensor ) and the code P0335 which is problem with the circuit or signal or sensor crankshaft. I made search to find it and today, sunday 29, after several hours, finally removed and replaced it. After this the truck starts very good as usually before the stalling experiences. Cost was some like 23 dollar but the risk in what i was and exposing others has no price. Is necessary to have a crash or fatal results for you to consider this a recall to protect others?

The dealerships service department has performed a "reprogramming of the ecm" as required by a recall notice issued on december 10, 2007. This did not remedy the condition. There exists a recall that requires dealerships to replace the crankshaft position sensors on 2002 and 2003 Nissan Altimas, but not for a 2005 Nissan Altima, which apparently suffers from the same problem. Car arbitrarily stalled and cut off at low speeds and began to also jerk intermittently as if attempting to shut down while traveling at highway speeds...Easily this could lend to a collision!!! Service engine soon indicator illuminated on dash and has remained lit. Dealer reprogrammed ecm only for stalling and jerking to continue, and service engine soon indicator to re-illuminate within 24-hours of initial "fix." also of note, dealer repairman noted that P0420 was diagnosed stating that the catalyst system is failing and engine may need to be replace depending on oil consumption level to be determined after 1000 miles driven. Canadian recall campaign code: r86 calls for P0335 kgb sensor to be replaced by dealer whereas niacin north america's only "corrective" action is for dealers to reprogram the ecma free of charge--which, consequently, does not remedy the problem--and instead attempts to divert the computer from diagnosing the problem--a faulty crankshaft position sensor. 2004 MERCEDES BENZ SLK32 with 46000.0 miles

The car stalled at a traffic light after 15-minutes drive. Starter turned the engine just fine, but the engine won't start. After about 20 minutes i was able to start the car. Next day it happened again - after a drive car was parked at the store parking lot and it won't start once i returned to it 10 minutes. After unsuccessful attempts to start the engine for about 20 minutes, i was able to do so again. Both time the "check engine" light was illuminated and obd code was "P0335 - crankshaft position sensor a circuit malfunction". I'm deeply concerned with this safety issue, which appears to be quite common for the mercedes-benz cars.

First, on 07/28/2012, at about 60 mph while driving on the freeway, notice the vehicle's engine sort of stalled (saw the tachometer drop completely) for 1 second and resume operation. Continue driving but the slip, vdc and check engine lights came on. Continued driving the car to my destination, which was less than a mile from this incident. After a while, tried to start the car and it would not start. It took a few tries and finally did. Decided to go back home and as i was exiting the freeway at about 45 mph (thanks good) the car's engine completely shut off (thanks god was exiting the freeway (don't want to think what could have happened with cars coming right behind me at about 70). Was able to restart the car after a few minutes and continued driving slow (on the streets) to my destination. The car now starts ok after a while but suddenly dies. Took the car to a repair show and it shows a P0335 code (crankshaft position sensor). My mechanic says, very common problem with this cars. ***same recall as in the 2003 model year*** what are we waiting for, for some one to die in a car accident for nissan's failure to correct this problem that was reported in the 2003 models??? I hope not. If i had children, i would transport them in this vehicle, ever!!!

2004 TOYOTA PRIUS with 92521.0 miles

My 24 yr. Old child was driving out of a driveway at 5 mph when the car stopped and all warning lights including brakes and engine and triangle went on. It would not restart. It would not take a battery jump. Had it towed to Toyota service and they discovered code P0335 present and verified a faulty crankshaft position sensor, replaced it, and cleaned throttle body. The car works now. Cost for diagnosis and service was $367.07. This faulty part was a part of a recall dated in 2006 for 2001 and 2002 Priuses. We wish to advise the agency that we believe the year 2004 and perhaps other years ought to be considered for the same recall as the 2001 and 2002 Prius models with respect to a faulty crankshaft position sensor. We believe our car had a faulty sensor and that we should be a part of the earlier recall, and also obtain a full reimbursement for charges. This sudden stopping by the vehicle poses a very dangerous situation for any driver. Our child would have been on a major highway just a few minutes later and could have been the victim of a horrendous accident. We urge your agency to be proactive in investigating this matter. Thank you.

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 Nissan Sentra. While driving approximately 45 mph, the engine stalled without warning. After multiple attempts, the vehicle restarted and the "check engine" warning indicator illuminated. An independent diagnostic test displayed a code of P0335, which indicated that the crankshaft positioning sensor potentially caused the failure. The manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 07v527000 (engine and engine cooling). The approximate failure mileage was 127,000.

I was driving my girlfriends 2004 Nissan Altima 2.5 down the highway on 2/15/2008 when the transmission down shifted and then directly upshifted hard. I got to my destination and tried to restart the car when i left it cranked longer than usually, in fact unusually long but it did start up. I got back on the highway to go home and while getting on the on ramp to the highway the car shut off and the steering wheel locked up and the service engine soon light came on. I did what i could to get the car to the shoulder and waiting a couple of minutes and tried to restart the car. I did get it restarted and took city streets to autozone to have the codes read from the service engine soon light. I had 2 codes, one being P0725 and P0355. I once again took city streets home to avoid the same thing happening going 70mph. I got it home that friday the 15th and put it in the garage. I got online and went to Nissanclub.Com and researched the problem. I found out that the P0335 is the crank position sensor malfunction and that caused my code of P0725 being the engine speed sensor. Through researching this is a very big problems with the 2002-2006 Altimas, mainly the 2.5 4cylinders. Nissan issued a recall for the 2002-2005 and 2006 Altimas but failed to include the 2003 and 2004 in it. Now why would they not put the same faulty sensors in the 2003's and 2004's and skip ahead and put them in the 05's and 06's. I went to the dealership on monday the 18th to verify her car was not included in the recall and it wasn't. This is Nissans deliberate attempt to not take full responsibility for the faulty crankshaft position sensors put in the 2002-2006 Altimas. I paid for the $30.00 sensor, also another $30 sensor that is recommended replaced with the crankshaft sensor and spent 3 1/2 hours outta my day to replace the hard to get sensor. It is my belief that Nissan needs to include the 2003 and 2004 Altimas in the recall with the 2002-05, 06.

One day my check engine light came on. I own an obd2 diagnostic reader and it gave me the code P0335 which translates to crankshaft position sensor a circuit malfunction. I did some research and there was a recall on the 2002 and 2003, and later included some 2004 models of my car (mine is a 2004) for the same failure. I called Nissan and they looked up my vin number and told me there was no open recalls for my car. I purchased a new sensor and installed it, cleared the check engine light, and checked for any remaining codes. None were present. I tested the old sensor according to the Nissan repair manual's method and it tested good. A day after i replaced the sensor the check engine light came on again with the same failure code. I called Nissan again and explained my situation to them and they still told me my car was not in the recall. So far what i have experienced is a momentary loss of power under certain driving conditions like going uphill at approximately 2000 rpm. Also it does not want to start sometimes, which is becoming more frequently, and according to forum sites i've visited is directly related to this.

4 days ago while driving my car it just shut off. The car died it just completely shut off while i was going 55 miles and hour. Luckily i was able to pull off the road and out of traffic. I tried restarting the car and after several attempts i was able to get it restarted. The check engine light came on at that point. It then went less than a mile and the same thing happened again. This time i was able to pull in and park it in a store parking lot. I took it to a repair shop and had it put on there machine to see what the problem was. I was told it was the battery so i had that replaced. When i was driving it after leaving the repair shop the car died again. At the suggestion of my sister i took the car the next day to a auto parts store they plugged in the machine to read the codes it came back P0335 the crank shaft sensor. I had to order a new one and replace it and the check engine light has yet to go off. Today while doing some research on this problem i find out that this is a problem for this vehicle. I have never heard about the recall that i keep reading about while doing this research. I am scared to drive my car and scared to drive it with my kids in it. The car is a 2004 Nissan Sentra se with a 1.8 engine. I have not had a chance to road test it to see if it will continue to shut off now that the sensor has been replaced because i am scared to drive it for an extended period. I have yet to see if the problem has been corrected but from what i have been reading i doubt that it has been.

"takata recall". My complaint is that while driving my 2003 Nissan Altima, the engine stalls intermittently. I only have about 50k miles on the car and it has been well cared for. This is very dangerous as you can imagine. The code comes up P0335, but the mechanic believes it is a faulty crankshaft position sensor as well as circuitry issues involving the same part. Apparently, there has been a recall on the crankshaft position sensor for the 2003 Nissan Altima, however dealers are not willing to acknowledge this. I would like this investigated further, as i'm discovering upon further research this is a pandemic among 2003 Nissan Altima owners and an extreme safety hazard while driving. I was nearly rear ended at a stoplight a few weeks ago and while driving at a 45mph speed on a busy street where there were many cars around me.

2003 Nissan Altima vin# [xxx] . Loss of power and stalling at low speed. Obd codes show P0725 and P0335 which are engine speed sensor circuit malfunction and crankshaft position sensor circuit malfunction. Problem appears to be covered by previous recall rq06001 or 06v24200 however Nissan denies that this vehicle is included in the recall notice.

While driving in routine traffic, i felt a jolt, the service engine soon light came on and the rpms dropped resulting in the engine stalling. The first time this occurred i was able to pull over on the freeway to the shoulder. The 2nd time this occurred, i didn't pull over in time and the power steering and brakes went out making it difficult to stop the car to turn off. I am usually able to turn the car on after a moment without issue. At first it occurred once a week and Nissan dealership could not diagnose or "recreate" the issue. Then it didn't happen for several months, and now it's been happening extremely frequently and sometimes very difficult to start the car up. My safety is at risk because the engine will just stop, and i've found it difficult to get over to a shoulder, and on some parts of the freeway there is no shoulder. I've taken to Nissan dealership 4 different occasions and even when the service engine soon light comes on and stays on, they claim the computer does not produce any codes and cannot recreate the issue. I suggested a recall on the crankshaft sensor and they claimed it was not for my car or engine type. I've had tune ups, oil changes, and they did a repair involving a carbon build up and nothing has solved the issue. I personally ran the diagnostics today and the computer issue a trouble code for P0335 crankshaft sensor malfunction circuit a. I'd say the car has stalled about 20-25 times in almost a year.

I was at a stop light ready to turn left onto another street when suddenly my car stalls out right in the middle of the intersection. It took me a few times to get my car started again and when it fired up again i started driving away but my car would be having a hard time going as if it was starting to bog out. I later did a diagnostics test and got the code P0335 which ended up being the crankshaft position sensor. A few weeks before this happened, my car had the same symptoms but it wasn't as bad. It would just bog down like once in 2 weeks but this was the worst case scenario!.

My daughter was driving home from work in my 2003 Nissan Altima when the car suddenly stopped running, the steering wheel froze and she nearly ran off the road. Thank goodness there were no other cars coming and she was able to pull off the road with no incident. I pulled the codes and found it to be the P0335 (crankshaft position sensor) and P0725 (engine speed sensor). After searching the web, it appears there are many people with the same issue. I looked on the nhtsa website and found nhtsa campaign id number: 03v455000, Nissan recall no. R3022 that states exactly what did happen - the check engine light came on and the engine stopped without warning. The remedy is that a dealer replace the crankshaft position sensor. So, i called Nissan, found the other recall that is related to the sensor, took the car to the dealer (barely - i drove and the car stopped twice - again, lucky there was no crash). The dealer called and said he could not fix this recall because the sensor was bad. Now i have to go back and pickup the car and pray again that i don't have a crash coming home. Seems totally unreasonable that Nissan would have a recall for this exact problem - the crankshaft position sensor - for, among many others, 2002-2003 Altimas and yet there are many people out there with these cars that Nissan won't fix. I was laid off and certainly cannot afford a $300 fix for a $40 part so we will have to drive this death car until i can figure out how to get it fixed. And pray every time i get in it that we don't end crashing the car, hurting myself, my young twins, my older daughter or anyone else on the road. This is a severely dangerous issue and Nissan should replace all cars - not just a select few.

While driving (at any speed), i experienced the engine loss of power like if the brakes were suddenly applied for maybe 2 seconds then the car picked up speed as it was before. When this happened, the "service engine soon" warning light came on and stayed on. The car keeps experiencing loss of power while driving like wanting to stop running and it is taking longer to start. I'm afraid the car will stop running and cause an accident. I called Nissan usa consumer affairs and they told me that there were no safety recalls for this condition for my vehicle, only the head lamp fix. I took the vehicle to the place i bought it from and the codes associated with the "service engine soon" warning light on were P0725 -engine speed input circuit, and P0335 - crank shaft position sensor. They reset the codes and told me to keep driving it over the weekend and to bring the car back on wed jan 25th. As i was driving home from the dealership, it happened again and the service engine soon came on. I got home and parked the car waiting for wednesday appointment. I think this is a very serious safety concern on this Altima 2003 vehicle that could warrant a safety recall. My vehicle was built in sept 2002.

I recently filed odi # 10152516 (my 2003 Altima 2.5 had stalled at a red light and cut out while i was driving on the freeway) and would like to update information: i took car to dealer and was told that they "found code P0335-cr pos sensor," so they replaced crank pos sensor. Nissan needs to do a recall for this problem so other owners won't need to suffer this dangerous problem. *nm

On several instances the engine cuts off while driving. Major safety concern. Eventually, the check engine light came on. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer informed me of recall campaign to reprogram the ecm. Also, they found error codes P0725 and P0335. They told me that i had to replace my crank shaft position sensor (at my cost -- this was not part of the recall). After the dealer completed the recall work, the car still stalled that very day on the way home. Took the car to my neighborhood mechanic who replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Check engine light was cleared by mechanic and has not lit up again, however, the vehicle has stalled while driving again. This sounds very similar to the symptoms which led to the recall of the 2002 Nissan Altima's. My car was manufactured in december 2002, but was not included in the 2002 recall. The 2003 recall only consisted of reprogramming the ecm -- which did not solve the problem. This is a serious safety concern as the vehicle still cuts out at random times in moving traffic. Please investigate -- this is similar to hundreds of other complaints under 2003 Nissan Altima's that i found reading through the complaints on this website -- please connect the dots and make Nissan own up to the problem. *ak
