P2173

Throttle Actuator Control System - High Air Flow Detected

DTC P2173, sometimes indicated as P217300 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a manufacturer-specific fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the air/fuel mixture causing throttle actuator control system - high air flow detected.

The throttle actuator control system - high air flow detected error code is caused when the engine's computer detects a high flow of air entering the throttle body. This can be caused by a number of things, such as a dirty air filter, a vacuum leak, or a defective throttle body.
The best way to fix this error code is to identify and fix the underlying problem that is causing the high air flow. Once the problem is fixed, the error code should go away.

2014 JEEP COMPASS with 67785.0 miles

On march 4, while vehicle was in warm-up phase at home, in idle, a sharp snap was heard (later discovered was the electronic throttle body), then vehicle set two codes (P0171, P2173), and immediately went into limp mode (traction control off, throttle body reduced power, abs for slowing vehicle if being driven above slower speeds for limp mode). We were on a schedule, so vehicle was shut off immediately and we used our other vehicle for transport. Both codes were researched to determine best repair methods. Since the P0171 was a repeat code, and the P2173 was an unfamiliar sae code not normally used on my previous vehicles, a complete disassembly of the intake was warranted. I am mechanically competent due to training and experience and know my own limits of competency and tools for repair. Here are the basics for reference of what was found. 1. The pcv valve (multiaire) had failed at the internal pintle, and was allowing crankcase air/oil to enter the intake at too high a volume. It was replaced. The map sensor set the P2173 code, then failed due to oil intrusion and was replaced. The rapid snapping of the throttle body under pressure uncalibrated the internal throttle position sensors, and could not maintain proper position was replaced. The intake manifold (newer design for the 2.0l i4 without the flapper controls just guide veins for the intake air) main gasket had shrunk in the plastic intake seat channel and was allowing outside air (P0171) to seep past the gasket on the lower lip of the gasket, and was also not sealing between the cylinders (gases were transferring between the cylinders). The throttle body gasket was pristine. During repair, pressure tested intake for leaks, and tubes and lines for cracks. Reading sae code P2173 was determined that code and subsequent limp mode was designed to prevent damage to the plastic intake manifold. It worked.

2013 DODGE AVENGER with 91000.0 miles

While driving at hwy. Speed vehicle surged but no warning lights, etc. Next time started, warning lights came on indicating a P2173 code.Car was just at Dodge dealer for recalls. Car will idle fine for a couple of minutes then start surging, idling rough with no power and set warning lights, mil, etc, esc. These will go off when vehicle is turned off except for check engine light. We have replaced throttle body with no change. Cleared code and came back and did the same. Very disappointed that Dodge has not addressed this issue. It is not safe.

2013 CHRYSLER 200

The car engine periodically loses power. My mechanic did a diagnostics and said the problem is with the throttle control actuator, the code is P2173. Although my car is not included in the recall, my mechanic is sure it is a default issue by Chrysler. I am experiencing the same malfunctioning problems as other Chryslers that were being recalled for engine losing power. This has happened while driving on the expressway, i had to put on my caution light and pray until i could get to my mechanic's shop. I informed Chrysler about this and i kept getting the runaround. This car only has 36,000 miles on it, even though it's a 2013; my mother owned this car before me and we both take very good care of all the maintenance for the car. The safety problem is that this issue can happen anytime without warning and i am afraid to even drive the car especially on the highway or expressway, but it is unavoidable at times.

2009 HYUNDAI AZERA with 123000. miles

Extreme fire hazard warning - Hyundai - insufficient wiring insulation. 2009 Azera stalled and died going 45 mph during light rain 12/9/19. Tow truck driver tested battery and found low alternator output. Replaced alternator and valve cover gasket where oil was leaking onto alternator. Once repaired, continued to get P0108 error code and stalling after 20 min of run. Removed paint and added electrical gel to all main ground wire to body/frame points (all were painted, unsure how it was grounded in first place). Problem persisted with new codes now P2106, P1295, P0122, P0222, P0123, P0108, P2173, P161B. Limped car to local shop and called Hyundai, who assigned case #16592407. Shop said map sensor was bad, replaced with new sensor. Problem persisted with P0108 code in driveway idling. Did vacuum check on tubing but found bare wires on wiring run that holds oil pressure, map sensor, engine temp sensor and others on 1/1/20. Under fabric wrap around wire bundles, all wiring insulation has dissentigrated causing short circuits and bad map sensor voltage. All wiring is bad that runs across engine top has bad insulation almost to alternator. Extreme fire hazard. Attempting to contact dealer. Insulation on wires cannot handle engine temps and disintegrates leaving bare wires. 2009 Hyundai Azera with 3.3 l v6, 123,000 miles.
