GROUP RECALL DATE Technical Service Bulletin SUBJECT: MAY 2016 NUMBER 16-01-023 MODEL(S) SONATA (LF) SONATA HYBRID (LF HEV) ELANTRA (AD) DRIVER AIRBAG (DAB) REPLACEMENT (RECALL CAMPAIGN 144) IMPORTANT *** Dealer Stock and Retail Vehicles *** Dealers must perform this Recall Campaign on all affected vehicles prior to customer retail delivery and whenever an affected vehicle is in the shop for any maintenance or repair. When a vehicle arrives at the Service Department, access Hyundai Motor America's "Warranty Vehicle Information" screen via WEBDCS to identify open Campaigns. Description: The 2015 - 2016 Sonata (LF), 2016 Sonata Hybrid (LF HEV), and 2017 Elantra (AD) features a two stage (primary and secondary) frontal driver airbag. Due to a manufacturing error, the second stage for the airbag may not have been properly installed in some vehicles. In the event of a collision requiring frontal second stage airbag deployment, the driver's second stage airbag will not deploy, increasing the risk of injury. This bulletin describes the procedure to replace the Driver Airbag (DAB) to correct this condition. NOTE: This recall involves a total of 33 vehicles, 30 2015 - 2016 Sonatas, one 2016 Sonata Hybrid, and two 2017 Elantras. Applicable Vehicles: Certain 2015 - 2016 Sonata (LF), 2016 Sonata Hybrid (LF HEV), and 2017 Elantra (AD). NOTE 2: If a part is found in need of replacement while performing Recall Campaign 144 and the affected part is still under warranty, submit a separate warranty claim using the same Repair Order. If the affected part is out of warranty, submit a Prior Approval Request for goodwill consideration prior to performing the work. TSB #: 16-01-023 Page 2 of 7 SUBJECT: DRIVER AIRBAG (DAB) REPLACEMENT (RECALL CAMPAIGN 144) Service Procedure: 1. If applicable, record the customer’s radio preset stations for AM/FM/XM. 2. For Sonata and Elantra, pull hood release to open the hood to access the battery. 3. For Sonata Hybrid, press the trunk button to open the trunk to access the battery. Sonata and Elantra Sonata Hybrid Open the battery cover. Sonata Hybrid TSB #: 16-01-023 Page 3 of 7 SUBJECT: 4. DRIVER AIRBAG (DAB) REPLACEMENT (RECALL CAMPAIGN 144) Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 3 minutes prior to performing the Driver Airbag (DAB) replacement procedure. Sonata and Elantra Negative battery terminal tightening torque: 4.0 ~ 6.0 N.m (0.4 ~ 0.6 kgf.m, 3.0 ~ 4.4 lbft) Sonata Hybrid 5. Locate the 3 locking points of the Driver Airbag (DAB). TSB #: 16-01-023 Page 4 of 7 SUBJECT: 6. DRIVER AIRBAG (DAB) REPLACEMENT (RECALL CAMPAIGN 144) Using a small Flathead screwdriver, insert into the locking hole, and press on the 3 snap fit pin stopper to release the Driver Airbag (DAB) module. Snap fit pin stopper 7. Gently remove the Driver Airbag (DAB) module from the steering wheel after depressing the snap fit pin stopper. NOTICE Be careful not to damage the clock spring connections. TSB #: 16-01-023 Page 5 of 7 DRIVER AIRBAG (DAB) REPLACEMENT (RECALL CAMPAIGN 144) SUBJECT: 8. Disconnect the squib and horn connectors and remove the Driver Airbag (DAB) from the steering wheel. Sonata LF and LF HEV Horn connector ! CAUTION The removed airbag module should be stored in a clean, dry place with the pad cover facing up. Squib connectors Sonata LF and LF HEV Use a small Flathead screwdriver to lift the orange locking tab and then remove the squib connector. Elantra Horn connector Squib connectors TSB #: 16-01-023 Page 6 of 7 SUBJECT: DRIVER AIRBAG (DAB) REPLACEMENT (RECALL CAMPAIGN 144) Elantra Use a small Flathead screwdriver to lift the orange locking tab from both sides and then remove the squib connector. 9. Install the new driver airbag module in the reverse order of removal, ensuring that the module is fully seated to the steering wheel (all 3 snap fit pins will click into position and airbag module will be flush with the steering wheel). 10. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. 11. Turn the ignition ON and confirm no DTC(s) are present. If a DTC(s) is present, use the GDS to clear the code. If applicable, clear any DTCs in the Blue Link system per instructions of TSB 12-BE005-2. 12. If applicable, reprogram the customer’s radio presets for AM/FM/XM. TSB #: 16-01-023 Page 7 of 7
