• Recall 243953 [USA]: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 elantra, genesis coupe, sonata hybrid, 2012-2015 accent, azera, veloster, 2013-2015 elantra coupe, santa fe, 2014-2015 equus, 2010-2012 veracruz, 2010-2013 tucson, 2015 tucson fuel cell, and 2013 santa fe sport vehicles. The anti-lock brake system (abs) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
  owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the abs fuse, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed november 1, 2023. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available beginning april 2024. • Recall 184696 [USA]: A turn signal that activates in the opposite direction of what was intended by the driver increases the risk of a crash.

The smart junction box (sjb) software logic may not properly interpret the signals received from the multifunction switch, which could cause the turn signal to activate in the opposite direction of what the driver intended.

• Recall 108843 [USA]: If the driver is alerted there is a brake system malfunction, but not specifically with the abs system, the driver may operate the vehicle unaware that the vehicle's brakes may lock up during hard braking, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 sonata vehicles manufactured may 28, 2014, to august 21, 2015. The affected vehicles are equipped with an antilock braking system (abs) warning light intended to warn the driver if there is an abs malfunction. In the event of an abs malfunction, the brake system warning light will illuminate, but the abs warning light will not illuminate. Since the vehicles have abs malfunction lights that do not illuminate, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) number 135, "light vehicle brake systems."

  Issue: hyundai auto canada is conducting a product improvement campaign that provides an update to the engine control module to detect potential problems before an engine fails. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: this only affects vehicles equipped with a 2.4 l mpi engine. For the sonata model, only the sonata hybrid is affected by this campaign. All vehicles previously included in tc # 2021-033 are now part of this new campaign. Vehicles that were previously repaired under campaign r0181 (transport canada #2021-033) do not require this software update. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of an accident. An engine failure could also create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the engine control module.   Issue: when repairs were completed under recall campaign 2015-428 (hyundai #r0101) or 2017197 (hyundai #r0130), the high pressure fuel pipe may not have been properly installed on the fuel pump outlet. A fuel leak could occur if the pipe was damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the recall repair.   On certain vehicles, the connections between the front seat belts and the floor mounted seat belt anchor pretensioners may not have been attached properly during assembly. This could result in a front seat belt possibly detaching from the anchor pretensioner. If the vehicle were to be involved in a collision, and the seat belt were to detach, it could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant.   On certain vehicles equipped with a panoramic sunroof, the wind deflector anchor plate of the sunroof may have insufficient bonding. If the wind deflector becomes partially detached from its mounting points after the sunroof is opened, it can interfere with the moveable sunroof panel while the sunroof is being closed and could allow the glass panel to separate from the vehicle while driving, creating a road hazard which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.   On certain vehicles, a pin socket in one of the wiring harness joint connectors may have been damaged during the manufacturing process. This could result in the illumination of the instrument cluster's indicator lamps, inability to remove the vehicle's shifter from the park position, or a reduction of steering assist. • Hyundai and kia abs module fires investigation # AQ23002

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received eight hyundai motor america (hyundai) and eight kia america, inc. (kia) part 573 recall reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (abs) modules or hydraulic electronic control units (hecu) manufactured by the equipment supplier mando. The part 573 recall reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by mando. Safety recalls included in this audit query (aq) review include: hyundai recalls 20v-520, 20v-543, 21v-161, 21v-160, 21v-303, 22v-056, 22v-810, and 23v-651. Kia recalls 16v-815, 20v-518, 20v-519, 21v-137, 21v-331, 22v-051, 22v-800, and 23v-652 the purpose of this aq is to evaluate the timeliness and scoping of hyundai and kia’s defect decision making and adherence with reporting requirements; and understand the varying defect descriptions and remedies between these recalls.

• Pedestrian alert sounds investigation # DP22005

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072. Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.On january 27, 2023, nhtsa opened defect petition (dp) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On june 24, 2023 and as supplemented on june 25, 2023, the petitioner notified nhtsa he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioners withdrawal, dp22-005 is closed. Closure of this dp does not represent a determination by nhtsa regarding the subject matter of the petition.

• Loss of motive power investigation # DP22003

  The national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) received a letter dated july 13, 2022, petitioning the agency to initiate a safety defect investigation into loss of motive power allegations attributed to oil drain pan assembly failures on certain hyundai motor america, inc. And kia america, inc. Vehicles spanning model years (my) 2005-2021. The petitioners cited examples of complaints indicating that the subject vehicles were experiencing rapid loss of engine oil due to oil drain plug back outs, resulting in loss of motive power and/or catastrophic engine damage. Additional complaints were provided which alleged that the oil drain pans lack sufficient structural integrity and are susceptible to cracking. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745. On september 12, 2022, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened defect petition (dp22-003) to evaluate the petitioners’ request. The petitioners have provided additional complaints within four supplemental letters dated january 31, 2023, march 21, 2023, may 23, 2023, and august 4, 2023. Odi’s evaluation included the review and analysis of the complaints and supporting information submitted by the petitioners, as well as additional complaints submitted directly to nhtsa which referenced either the oil drain plug or a crack in the oil pan. After reviewing the available data, odi has not identified evidence that would support opening a defect investigation into the oil drain pan assemblies of the subject vehicles. Based on a review of the available information, a loss of motive power resulting from an oil drain plug back out has not occurred between the initial sale of a vehicle and the completion of its first oil change. If during an oil change service, a technician fails to remove the existing drain plug gasket before installing a new gasket, it is likely that a proper seal between the drain plug and the oil pan will not be made. An improper seal between the drain plug and oil pan could lead to the backing out on the drain plug, resulting in the sudden loss of oil while driving. Additionally, the provided examples of oil pan cracks were localized to the immediate vicinity of the oil drain plug and/or appeared to be the result of direct-contact with a tool during servicing.  there is no information to support that a vehicle-based defect exists relating to the oil pan assembly, and instead the documented incidents are related to the failure to follow the proper maintenance procedures during oil change service. In october 2023, hyundai published a technical service bulletin (tsb) that provided detailed instructions for oil change service on its gasoline powered vehicles, specifically highlighting the need to remove and replace the existing drain plug gasket prior to reinstalling the drain plug. After a thorough review of the material submitted by the petitioner, the information already in nhtsas possession, and the potential risks to motor vehicle safety implicated by the petitioners allegations, nhtsa does not believe that a formal investigation is warranted. Therefore, the petition is denied. A federal register notice (frn) further detailing nhtsa’s reasons for denial of the petition will be published. The reference numbers for the complaints to nhtsa cited by the petitioner can be found in the petition submission documents in the public file for dp22-003. • Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  On march 29, 2019, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 on hyundai and pe19-004 on kia) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai and kia vehicles.  during the pe investigations, hyundai and kia issued several recalls to address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failures involving various engine types.  the remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement.  additionally, both manufacturers have been installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure).Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). On december 22, 2021, odi upgraded pe19-003 and pe19-004 to this engineering analysis (ea21-003, covering both hyundai and kia) to evaluate the scope of the prior recalls related to engine failures/fires and the efficacy of the recall remedies for the recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.  the former issue involved approximately 550,000 my 2013 hyundai elantra, my 2011 kia sorento, and my 2012-2015 kia rio.  the latter issue involved approximately 2.5 million recalled vehicles, which have been identified as displaying potential remedy concerns: hyundai recalls 15v-568, 17v-226, 20v-746, and 21v-727; and kia recalls 17v-224, 19v-120, 20v-750, and 21v-844. Regarding the recall scope issue, among all of the scope vehicles identified at ea opening, odi found only the my 2011 kia sorento vehicles equipped with both the theta ii 2.4l 4-cylinder multi-point injection (mpi) and the lambda ii 3.5l 6-cylinder mpi engines experienced relatively high rates of reported fires.  in december 2023, kia issued recall 23v-877 that will cover about 80,000 my 2011 kia sorento vehicles equipped with the theta ii 2.4l mpi engines.  the remedy will involve an inspection, and if necessary, a replacement of the engine, as well as the installation of ksds.  it should be noted that in 2021 these vehicles were included in a ksds product improvement campaign with warranty extension.  for the my 2011 sorento vehicles equipped with the lambda ii 3.5l engines, odi believes that future engine failures/fires involving these vehicles will likely be due to a lax in adhering to the proper or scheduled engine maintenance (regular engine oil changes), rather than a design or manufacturing engine issue. Regarding the issue of the efficacy of the recall remedies, odi found the majority of the recalled hyundai and kia vehicles, by model, experienced lower reported fire rates after the remedies were applied.  furthermore, odi found that for most vehicles that did not receive the recall remedies, by model, experienced relatively high fire rates.  to address this problem, hyundai informed odi in december 2023, that it will renotify all of its owners covered by the hyundai recalls of engine failures/fires every 8 months for the next 3 years.  in december 2023, kia stated that it will renotify the majority of its owners every 8 months for the next 3 years.Several previously recalled kia models are excluded from the renotification due to their lower reported rates of engine fires.  overall, the renotification actions will help to increase the recall completion rates, thus reduce the frequency of engine fires in the future. In view of the recall action being taken by kia and renotification actions being taken by both kia and hyundai, odi is closing this engineering analysis.  also, both companies have been released from the 2020-iniated consent orders (kia since november 2022 and hyundai since november 2023).  the agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.  to review the reports cited in the closing resume odi report identification number document, go to nhtsa.Gov.

• Throttle control system vulnerabilities investigation # DP21003

  The office of defects investigation of the national highway traffic safety administration received a petition letter dated october 10, 2021 requesting an investigation of an alleged defect(s) in the electronic throttle control system in certain model year (my) 2005-2016 kia optima/k5, my 2006-2015 kia sorento, my 2007-2016 hyundai elantra, my 2007-2016 hyundai santa fe, my 2006-2015 hyundai sonata vehicles. The petition was filed as a vehicle owner questionnaire that can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under reference (odi) number 11439675. The petitioners allege the subject vehicles exhibit a range of dangerous vehicle speed control problems including sudden uncommanded acceleration, runaway throttle conditions, surging, stalling and loss of motive power, all due to various defects and vulnerabilities in the electronic throttle control system.This defect petition has been opened to evaluate the allegation and determine whether to grant or deny the petitioners request.

• Air bag acu electrical overstress investigation # EA19001

  The office of defects investigation (odi) is expanding the investigation to include the equipment supplier and vehicle manufacturers (oems) using this unit.The investigation focuses on acus manufactured by trw, now zf-trw (zf) , the tier-one supplier to hyundai and kia and the other affected oems.The acu senses a vehicle crash to determine whether air bag deployment is required, and if so, deploys the appropriate air bags and other supplemental restraints.Zf supplied subject acus to six oems: fca, honda, hyundai, kia, mitsubishi and toyota.Internal to the acu is an electronic component (an application specific integrated circuit, or asic) that monitors signals from crash sensors.A failure of the asic may prevent deployment of the required air bags and devices, or may otherwise affect the proper operation of the acu.The acu is located in the passenger compartment, and electrical wiring connects the asic to sensors located at the front of the vehicle.Odi’s current understanding is that a crash event may, in and of itself, produce harmful signals on the sensor wiring capable of damaging the asic, although the probability of this occurring appears to be low.While the acu incorporates electrical circuitry intended to protect the asic from harmful signals, the level and effectiveness of the protective circuitry varies by oem customer.During pe18-003, hyundai and kia filed recalls (18v-137 and 18v-363 respectively) to address a defect that could result in acu disablement and non-deployments.According to the filings, the disablement occurs in certain types of frontal crash events.Both filings discussed a condition known as electrical overstress (eos) that affected the subject asic and was likely caused by electrical signals that entered the acu via sensor wiring.The recalled vehicles used acus that had the lowest levels of asic protection while non-recalled hyundai and kia products using subject acus had higher levels of protection.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled kia and hyundai populations.In september 2016, fca filed recall 16v-668 for certain model year (my) 2010 to 2014 chrysler, dodge and jeep products also manufactured with the subject acu.In that filing, fca also discussed an eos condition that resulted in a failure of the subject asic, which caused air bag non-deployment. Fca noted that the defect condition had only been observed in vehicles equipped with sensor harnessing routed across the front of the vehicle.Other fca vehicles that also used the subject acu, but not the cross-car harnessing, had not experienced eos failures, despite similar time in service. The recalled fca vehicles used a mid-level form of asic protection.Other fca vehicles that did not use cross car wiring, or used higher levels of asic protection, have not been recalled.Odi has not identified any eos failures in the non-recalled fca population.Recently, odi has identified two substantial frontal crash events (one fatal) involving toyota products where eos is suspected as the likely cause of the non-deployments.The crashes involved a my 2018 and a my 2019 corolla equipped with the subject acu that incorporated higher levels of asic protection.Additionally, both acus were found to be non-communicative (meaning the acu could not be read with an event data recorder) after the crash, a condition found in other cases where eos occurred with other oems.No other eos events have been identified for other toyota products (including corolla models that used the subject acu since my 2011), or for the honda and mitsubishi vehicles that use the subject acu.Odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of the subject acu designs to electrical signals, as well as other vehicle factors that can either lead to, or reduce the likelihood of, an eos event.Additionally, odi will evaluate whether an unreasonable risk exists that requires further field action.

My car caught on fire while operating

When driving at low speed straight ahead, steering locked up and was unable to turn left, steering wheel could not be turned from straight ahead position. Stopped vehicle and then started again, tried series of left/right turns to try and duplicate problem, steering would then randomly lock up when attempting to turn, more in left turns than in right. Occasionally was able to make full lock turn to left or right, however steering wheel would "catch" and wheel could not be turned to full lock unless vehicle was stopped and started again. At this point vehicle is not safe to drive and will need to be towed to hyundai dealer, however hyundai dealer says it will be at least 2 weeks before they can look at it, so vehicle is completely out of service.

2015 sonata intermittent problem which involves loss of acceleration when taking off from a stop. One has the accelerator to the floor and vehicle goes to 10 to 12 miles/hour until it gets to about the 3rd or 4th gear. This car has done this 5-6 times since the 20th of may. Took car to dealer; they hooked it up to the computer and got no codes, so i was told it was ok. I told them the car was unsafe to drive. This car has a duel-clutch automatic transmission which i believe has a major problem. Not sure what i can do about it. It has 71,000 miles and should be under warranty.

My motor to my vehicle all of a sudden started making noises as i was on my way home and dropped speed and didn’t accelerate past 55mph, my car started stuttering every time i hit the gas and it won’t go past 2000rpm and my check engine light started blinking at me. The safety issue with this is that when it stutters it could cause a potential crash and put me and others in danger. I took it to a swope hyundai dealership and they told me the barrings just automatically became damaged and the motor has to be replaced. I had this car for less than a year and it already starting to have problems. This issue happened 05/18/2021. The issues before the problems started becoming more severe was constant stuttering after i drove off after being to a complete stop from a red light. I’m extremely irritated as to this is the car that is suppose to help me get to work and college yet i can’t because it just decided to just break down on me in less than a year!

While commuting to work on a rainy evening, the wiper blade appeared suddenly to become loose and quickly became fully detached due to the motion of my windshield wipers. It was flung from my car and could not be retrieved. The replacement wiper blades (driver and passenger side) were attached by a licensed mechanic, and they both seemed to function properly after installation until the failure occurred. The passenger side wiper blade remained connected. It had been replaced simultaneously along with the driver side blade; therefore they each sustained the same wear and relative minimal usage following their application before the critical incident. It was disturbing to have a piece of equipment necessary for the safe operation of a vehicle suddenly fail while the car was in motion, and during rainy weather conditions. There was no reason to suspect this would occur. I am hoping that reports such as this will help to put an appropriate degree of pressure on private companies to ensure they are selling products which are dependable rather than which compromise the integrity of valuable property and personal safety. The images i am including merely provide evidence of the product's purchase and support my claim of the failure. The photos of my windshield were taken upon reentering my vehicle after my overnight work shift. They show a faint line devoid of condensation, created by the bare metal windshield wiper having scraped against my windshield after the blade was disconnected.

The contact owns a 2015 hyundai sonata. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle experienced shuddering, loss of power and acceleration. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 65,000.

I was driving to work i got about 5 minutes away from job the light ahead turned yellow i went to ease on the brake preparing to stop my steering wheel locked car car shut off and wouldnt start like i said i was 4 minutes away from my job so i managed to get it there i checked all fluids they were fine however when i did open the hood it was smoking from my engine

I was driving to work at like 4:00 in the morning it was still dark outside the light turned green and as i hit the gas pedal the car stall it was moving slow so on my right hand side there was a building so i try to make it to the parking lot the car started to power down in a knocking noise started it was a busy morning in the morning work traffic

I have been receiving a 'safety stop. Check hybrid system' warning multiple times. I have taken it to hyundai multiple times telling them of the issue. They kept telling me no issue could be found. The last instance they updated the software in the car in what appears to be a hail mary to say they did something. Last night i was traveling i was traveling on the highway at about 60 mph. The car started dinging and gave me the warning error attached. The car completely lost power and only allowed me to coast. I was lucky enough to barely able to get myself into a location of relative safety. I parked the car and restarted it and was able to drive once again. This continues to be an issue, extremely unsafe, and hyundai cannot give me an explanation or fix the problem. This is unacceptable and almost lead to a massive accident.
