ENGINE OIL AND FILTER CHANGE SERVICE GUIDELINES
Description: This bulletin provides important checkpoint guidelines when performing engine oil and
filter change services.
Applicable Vehicles:
• All models equipped with gasoline engine, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric
vehicles.
Warranty Information:
❖ Any engine damage that occurs from not following the service guideline outlined in this bulletin
is subject to warranty chargeback.
Service Information:
1.
Check the engine oil drain plug for proper fit and
cleanliness of the threads. If damaged, replace
with a new genuine Hyundai service part.
Engine Oil Drain Plug
➢ Do not use generic aftermarket drain plugs
which may have different thread depth and
flange specifications than the OE part design.
➢ Tightening torque: 39 Nm. (29 lb.-ft)

Remove the old washer from the drain plug and
always use a new drain plug washer.

➢ The drain plug washer is a one-time use
crush type gasket. Do not reuse this part.
NEW (Good)

OLD (Discard)
Prior to reinstalling the engine oil drain plug with a
new washer, check the drain hole of the oil pan
thoroughly to confirm that there is no old washer
stuck on the opening. Remove if found.

ENGINE OIL AND FILTER CHANGE SERVICE GUIDELINES
For engine with spin-on type oil filters, check the
oil filter mounting flange thoroughly to confirm
that there is no old gasket stuck on the flange.
Remove if found.
➢ With a clean shop towel, wipe off the sealing
area of the flange and the center threads.

Apply light film of oil to the sealing gasket of the
spin-on type oil filter, then prefill the filter with
some engine oil through the center threaded hole
(to help supply initial oil pressure upon restart).
Thread on the oil filter and firmly hand-tighten.
Do not overtorque during the installation.
➢ Tightening torque: 13.7 Nm. (10 lb.-ft)
6.
Refill the engine with oil following the Shop Manual
regarding the appropriate service grade and
viscosity of engine oil.
Optimum Fill Level
➢ Use the latest available API Service Grade
➢ Use the recommended engine oil viscosity
o If the specified engine oil viscosity is
unavailable at the time, use 5W-30
viscosity engine oil with the latest API
Service Grade.
7.
When all services are done, fully tighten the oil
filler cap until several “clicks” can be heard.
➢ Wipe clean the surrounding areas of any
spilled oil.
