  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 elantra, 2019-2021 kona and veloster vehicles equipped with 2.0l nu mpi engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which could result in engine damage.

  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 kona electric and 2020 ioniq electric vehicles. The lithium-ion (li-ion) battery may short-circuit.
  owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the interim action is complete. Hyundai will notify owners, and as an interim action, owners have the option to follow provided instructions to perform a battery update through the vehicle's infotainment system or request a hyundai dealer to provide the update. Once parts are available, dealers will inspect the battery system assembly (bsa), and replace it if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk, and the interim action, with a letter mailed april 9, 2021. Final owner notification letters were mailed june 17, 2021. • Recall 2021252 [Canada]: Engine
  Issue: on certain vehicles, the engine's piston oil rings may be defective. This can cause engine wear that can lead to increased oil consumption. Eventually, this can create abnormal engine noise and the oil pressure warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail. Note: this only affects vehicles equipped with a 2.0 l nu mpi engine. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. An engine failure could also create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the engine. The engine will be replaced, if necessary. Hyundai is also developing a piston-ring noise sensing system (pnss) software update to be installed when available; it will alert the driver of potential damage before an engine failure occurs.

• Pedestrian alert sounds investigation # DP22005

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date.The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition.The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

• Loss of motive power investigation # DP22003

  The national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) received a letter dated july 13, 2022, petitioning the agency to initiate a safety defect investigation into loss of motive power allegations attributed to oil drain pan assembly failures on certain hyundai motor america, inc. And kia america, inc. Vehicles spanning model years (my) 2005-2021. The petitioners cited examples of complaints indicating that the subject vehicles were experiencing rapid loss of engine oil due to oil drain plug back outs, resulting in loss of motive power and/or catastrophic engine damage. Additional complaints were provided which alleged that the oil drain pans lack sufficient structural integrity and are susceptible to cracking. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745. On september 12, 2022, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened defect petition (dp22-003) to evaluate the petitioners’ request. The petitioners have provided additional complaints within four supplemental letters dated january 31, 2023, march 21, 2023, may 23, 2023, and august 4, 2023. Odi’s evaluation included the review and analysis of the complaints and supporting information submitted by the petitioners, as well as additional complaints submitted directly to nhtsa which referenced either the oil drain plug or a crack in the oil pan. After reviewing the available data, odi has not identified evidence that would support opening a defect investigation into the oil drain pan assemblies of the subject vehicles. Based on a review of the available information, a loss of motive power resulting from an oil drain plug back out has not occurred between the initial sale of a vehicle and the completion of its first oil change. If during an oil change service, a technician fails to remove the existing drain plug gasket before installing a new gasket, it is likely that a proper seal between the drain plug and the oil pan will not be made. An improper seal between the drain plug and oil pan could lead to the backing out on the drain plug, resulting in the sudden loss of oil while driving. Additionally, the provided examples of oil pan cracks were localized to the immediate vicinity of the oil drain plug and/or appeared to be the result of direct-contact with a tool during servicing.  there is no information to support that a vehicle-based defect exists relating to the oil pan assembly, and instead the documented incidents are related to the failure to follow the proper maintenance procedures during oil change service. In october 2023, hyundai published a technical service bulletin (tsb) that provided detailed instructions for oil change service on its gasoline powered vehicles, specifically highlighting the need to remove and replace the existing drain plug gasket prior to reinstalling the drain plug. After a thorough review of the material submitted by the petitioner, the information already in nhtsas possession, and the potential risks to motor vehicle safety implicated by the petitioners allegations, nhtsa does not believe that a formal investigation is warranted. Therefore, the petition is denied. A federal register notice (frn) further detailing nhtsa’s reasons for denial of the petition will be published. While slowing down car would make a whining sound and eventually started grinding. Car also stalled and died while coming to a stop. After that unable to drive or move the car in neutral.

From mid-may, my wife noticed the malfunction indicator light (mil) illuminate on the dashboard. The mil light would intermittently illuminate and not display at times. 1) in june, i went on hyundai's website using my log on account to request for service. A specific date was requested but not response was provided. 2) on june 17 at 10:39 am hst, i called hyundai service center and a left a message to request service for the mil issue. 3) on june 18 at 08:52 am hst, i called hyundai service center and a left a message to request service for the same issue. On july 05, 2021 , i just opened a letter from hyundai for an important safety recall regarding our vehicle involving defective piston oil rings that could result in abnormal knocking or stalling. I believe this is a serious issue that needs immediate attention, however, we are unable to receive any service here. My wife at this time is very afraid to drive the vehicle unless this issues is resolved. Please advise us what steps can be taken from nhtsa. The service level for hyundai is extremely poor , at this point we want to somehow terminate our lease . Best regards
