• Recall 243982 [USA]: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 elantra, genesis coupe, sonata hybrid, 2012-2015 accent, azera, veloster, 2013-2015 elantra coupe, santa fe, 2014-2015 equus, 2010-2012 veracruz, 2010-2013 tucson, 2015 tucson fuel cell, and 2013 santa fe sport vehicles. The anti-lock brake system (abs) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
  owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the abs fuse, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed november 1, 2023. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available beginning april 2024. • Recall 102598 [USA]: An air bag assembly that is not properly mounted may result in an increased risk of injury to the driver in the event of a crash.
  Hyundai motor company (hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 hyundai tucson vehicles manufactured january 3, 2011, through december 23, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the air bag assembly installed in the steering wheel may come loose from its mounting.

  Issue: hyundai auto canada is conducting a product improvement campaign that provides an update to the engine control module to detect potential problems before an engine fails. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: this only affects vehicles equipped with a 2.4 l mpi engine. For the sonata model, only the sonata hybrid is affected by this campaign. All vehicles previously included in tc # 2021-033 are now part of this new campaign. Vehicles that were previously repaired under campaign r0181 (transport canada #2021-033) do not require this software update. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of an accident. An engine failure could also create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the engine control module. Note: hyundai recommends that you should always follow the correct vehicle maintenance schedule, which is printed in the owner's manual.   Issue: the engine oil pan seal could leak on some vehicles with a 2.4 l engine. If the leak is not repaired, over time this could lead to engine damage or an engine failure. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of motive power with an inability to restart. Safety risk: a sudden loss of motive power could increase the risk of a crash. In some cases, an engine failure may also result in a fire. Corrective actions: the company will notify owners by mail. Hyundai dealers will replace the vehicle’s engine oil pressure switch with a new one. Dealers will also inspect the engine’s oil pan, and if necessary, replace the oil pan. Note: a driver may notice any of the following symptoms before an engine failure: an oil leak under the vehicle, a smell of hot or burning oil, a knocking sound from the engine, reduced power or hesitation, a check engine light, and/or an oil pressure warning light.

• Recall 2014177 [Canada]: Airbag
  On certain vehicles, bolts securing the driver's front airbag to the steering wheel may have been insufficiently tightened. This could allow the airbag to become loose or detach from the steering wheel, which could affect airbag deployment and increase the risk of injury in a crash. • Hyundai and kia abs module fires investigation # AQ23002

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received eight hyundai motor america (hyundai) and eight kia america, inc. (kia) part 573 recall reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (abs) modules or hydraulic electronic control units (hecu) manufactured by the equipment supplier mando. The part 573 recall reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by mando. Safety recalls included in this audit query (aq) review include: hyundai recalls 20v-520, 20v-543, 21v-161, 21v-160, 21v-303, 22v-056, 22v-810, and 23v-651. Kia recalls 16v-815, 20v-518, 20v-519, 21v-137, 21v-331, 22v-051, 22v-800, and 23v-652 the purpose of this aq is to evaluate the timeliness and scoping of hyundai and kia’s defect decision making and adherence with reporting requirements; and understand the varying defect descriptions and remedies between these recalls.

• Loss of motive power investigation # DP22003

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received a petition on july 13, 2022, requesting a defect investigation into an alleged defect of the "oil drain pan assemblies" on the following 83 models/model year vehicles stated by the petitioner: 2006-2019 hyundai sonata, 2013-2018 hyundai santa fe sport, 2010-2012 and 2019-2020 hyundai santa fe, 2010-2015 and 2018-2019 hyundai tucson, 2011-2021 kia sportage 2005-2020 kia optima, 2011-2020 kia sorento, 2010-2013 kia forte, 2010-2013,kia forte coup, and 2007-2010 kia rondo vehicles equipped with the 1.6l t-gdi gamma, 2.4l theta ii gdi, 2.4l in-line gdi theta ii, kappa, and 3.8l v-shaped gdi lambda-ii engines. The petition also cites additional hyundai/kia vehicles that use similar drain pan assemblies as the above-mentioned vehicles as having drain pan assembly failures. The petitioner provided subject and peer vehicles information related to alleged engine failures. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745.According to the petition, the hyundai/kia vehicle owners have made allegations of oil leakage failures occurring at highway speeds, without malfunction, indicator lights, or the leakage associated with under-tightening an oil drain plug, or a plug or pan with damaged thread. The alleged defects are causing engines to seize and loss of motive power. A defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petitioner identified a number of complaints received by nhtsa alleging complete engine failure from a variety of models stated above along with other models. • Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  On march 29, 2019, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 on hyundai and pe19-004 on kia) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai and kia vehicles.  during the pe investigations, hyundai and kia issued several recalls to address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failures involving various engine types.  the remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement.  additionally, both manufacturers have been installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure).Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). On december 22, 2021, odi upgraded pe19-003 and pe19-004 to this engineering analysis (ea21-003, covering both hyundai and kia) to evaluate the scope of the prior recalls related to engine failures/fires and the efficacy of the recall remedies for the recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.  the former issue involved approximately 550,000 my 2013 hyundai elantra, my 2011 kia sorento, and my 2012-2015 kia rio.  the latter issue involved approximately 2.5 million recalled vehicles, which have been identified as displaying potential remedy concerns: hyundai recalls 15v-568, 17v-226, 20v-746, and 21v-727; and kia recalls 17v-224, 19v-120, 20v-750, and 21v-844. Regarding the recall scope issue, among all of the scope vehicles identified at ea opening, odi found only the my 2011 kia sorento vehicles equipped with both the theta ii 2.4l 4-cylinder multi-point injection (mpi) and the lambda ii 3.5l 6-cylinder mpi engines experienced relatively high rates of reported fires.  in december 2023, kia issued recall 23v-877 that will cover about 80,000 my 2011 kia sorento vehicles equipped with the theta ii 2.4l mpi engines.  the remedy will involve an inspection, and if necessary, a replacement of the engine, as well as the installation of ksds.  it should be noted that in 2021 these vehicles were included in a ksds product improvement campaign with warranty extension.  for the my 2011 sorento vehicles equipped with the lambda ii 3.5l engines, odi believes that future engine failures/fires involving these vehicles will likely be due to a lax in adhering to the proper or scheduled engine maintenance (regular engine oil changes), rather than a design or manufacturing engine issue. Regarding the issue of the efficacy of the recall remedies, odi found the majority of the recalled hyundai and kia vehicles, by model, experienced lower reported fire rates after the remedies were applied.  furthermore, odi found that for most vehicles that did not receive the recall remedies, by model, experienced relatively high fire rates.  to address this problem, hyundai informed odi in december 2023, that it will renotify all of its owners covered by the hyundai recalls of engine failures/fires every 8 months for the next 3 years.  in december 2023, kia stated that it will renotify the majority of its owners every 8 months for the next 3 years.Several previously recalled kia models are excluded from the renotification due to their lower reported rates of engine fires.  overall, the renotification actions will help to increase the recall completion rates, thus reduce the frequency of engine fires in the future. In view of the recall action being taken by kia and renotification actions being taken by both kia and hyundai, odi is closing this engineering analysis.  also, both companies have been released from the 2020-iniated consent orders (kia since november 2022 and hyundai since november 2023).  the agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.  to review the reports cited in the closing resume odi report identification number document, go to nhtsa.Gov.

The contact owns a 2012 hyundai tucson. The contact stated while driving 75 mph, the contact heard a clicking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated moments later, a loud explosion came from the rear of the vehicle. The contact saw smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle stalled while driving to the side of the roadway. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the engine needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced two years prior under nhtsa campaign number: 19v063000 (engine and engine cooling) which the contact related to the failure. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000.

The contact owns a 2012 hyundai tucson. The contact stated that while driving at 40 - 50 mph, the vehicle lost motive power without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and diagnosed as engine failure. The mechanic referred the contact to tow the vehicle to another independent mechanic who specialized in engine repair. The vehicle was then towed to the second independent mechanic where the vehicle remained. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was over 100,000.

My vehicle has stalled (died) several times on me in the last several months. This happens when i am pulling into traffic or stopping at a light, etc. And is a serious problem because it could cause me to be hit. I took the car to my licensed mechanic and he said there was metal in the variable timing hub...He put the new part on it and then changed the oil and took it for a test drive. On return it was rechecked and found to be full of metal shavings again. He stated i would need new engine because mine was falling apart. He checked for recalls and found that this problem was a recall on the santa fe and the sonata but not for my tuscon...This does not make sense as these vehicles basically have the same or similar engines. Check engine light and oil light came on and stayed on. I was advised by my mechanic to contact you with this problem. I believe tuscons should be added to the recall list before lives are lost. I believe my car should be repaired by the dealership..I would appreciate any help you can give me on this

Brought it into the dealer and after two days looking at it, they said the engine needs to be replaced. They said the damage is in the lower part of the engine. They said since i am the second owner, manufacturer warranty does not apply. $9000 to replace engine. Recall for this engine in the 2012 kia with the manufacturer pays to have replaced, but not for same issue under the hyundai brand??

I was driving down the highway going about 70 miles and hour and for no reason i lost power , the oil light and battery light flashed briefly and thankfully i was able to get to the side of the road off the highway. It turned off. I was able to get it started agin and baby it to the nearest gas station less than a mile down the road. My husband told me to just baby it home and he would take a look at it. It started making a ticking sound. I did get it home and my husband said my engine was shot. Now i don't even know how this is possible for a car that was running just fine and then all this werid stuff happens. Please look into this. I could have been killed. Now we have a dead car that we still have to pay for. And we can't afford a new engine plus the labor to put it in. Now we are trying to find a new car.

Well with being said as a nurse , i find this unacceptable -- only 70 some miles and now i'm told the warranty criteria has changed. Please help and advise. Your warranty was a big decision maker in my decision to purchase. Driving in snow it went out , i drove because i was informed it was working .Lucky i'm able to send you this concern as the end result could have been a negative impact.
