Throttle control system vulnerabilities investigation # DP21003
The office of defects investigation of the national highway traffic safety administration received a petition letter dated october 10, 2021 requesting an investigation of an alleged defect(s) in the electronic throttle control system in certain model year (my) 2005-2016 kia optima/k5, my 2006-2015 kia sorento, my 2007-2016 hyundai elantra, my 2007-2016 hyundai santa fe, my 2006-2015 hyundai sonata vehicles. The petition was filed as a vehicle owner questionnaire that can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under reference (odi) number 11439675. The petitioners allege the subject vehicles exhibit a range of dangerous vehicle speed control problems including sudden uncommanded acceleration, runaway throttle conditions, surging, stalling and loss of motive power, all due to various defects and vulnerabilities in the electronic throttle control system. This defect petition has been opened to evaluate the allegation and determine whether to grant or deny the petitioners request.
Engine stalling - fuel pump failure investigation # PE08044
On august 19, 2008, hyundai submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning fuel pump failure resulting in engine stall in approximately 65,000 model year 2008 hyundai elantra vehicles with 2.0 liter beta engines produced from november 5, 2007, through june 28, 2008 (nhtsa recall no. 08v-429, hyundai campaign 086).The recalled vehicles are equipped with fuel pumps manufactured with upper body components from a different supplier than those manufactured prior to november 5, 2007.According to hyundai, the new suppliers upper body components had incorrect dimensional characteristics resulting in misalignment of the armature shaft, which caused some of the fuel pumps to experience poor brush-to-commentator contact conditions that could result in engine stall. The use of ethanol blend fuel, containing up to 10 percent ethanol, causes a film build-up that creates high resistance between the brush and commutator. The misaligned armature shaft prevents the brush and commutator from making sufficient contact to overcome the high resistance film build-up, therefore producing less pumping pressure than required to supply the fuel injection system. Sixty-four of the complaints (72%), including the crash and injury allegation, involve the recalled vehicles. The complaint rate in the subject vehicle population is 98.5 per 100,000 vehicles, compared with 21.4 in the remaining population, which has on average been in service over a year longer. The warranty claim rate is also significantly higher in the recalled vehicles, which had 569 claims (0.9 percent claim rate) compared with 126 claims in the remaining population (0.1 percent claim rate). Hyundai will replace the fuel pump subassemblies in the recalled vehicles free of charge. This preliminary evaluation is closed with hyundais recall.
138 Results returned successfully. NOTE: Any missing decoded values should be interpreted as NHTSA does not have data on the specific variable. Missing value should NOT be interpreted as an indication that a feature or technology is unavailable for a vehicle.

When i am driving the vehicle all of a sudden it will jump back really fast and the check engine will go on and if i continue to drive the vehicle it seems like i'm putting pressure on the gas for it to go but then once i turn off the vehicle the check engine light will all of a sudden be gone. If i drive the vehicle again the problem won't happen right away it will be some time before it happens again all of a sudden.

My car wouldn't start and hissed when it did king hyundai said "hissing was the condensation because it hadn't been driven for so long" (3 years - just went out and started it once in a while). Kh told me after extensive checking & videoing the underside of car (they sent me video) that it was the battery. It died on the way home ! And then: - kh misdiagnosed my car three times ! - head gasket now - kh told me they took "several test drives" yet the mileage in & the millage out on their invoice was exactly the same ! - took over a month to give me estimate - will not return my calls (30+ calls) to the service manager - dealer manager failed to return my calls also - even though hyundai customer care dept themselves suggested the dealer honor the 100,000/10 year warranty - kh refused ! - kh had put an erroneous lien on the car the day of purchase and it took me over a month to have removed - please note: my mother bought the car new from this same dealer - i was with mom and she wrote them a check for the full purchase price. Kh convinced mom to allow them to put lien on the car which kh told us would be immediately removed so they could get the financing bonus or whatever they call it. So when i went to sell the car earlier this year (mom passed away as well as my sister in boca raton and i'm trying to orchestrate this from california where i live ) and i had to get a duplicate title the lien was right there !!! Long story short it took me over a month to have erroneous lien removed so i could even get the title ! The kh denied putting the lien on (remember i was there) and when i called the lien holder - they also denied ever putting it on - blah blah blah. It took me dozens of phone calls to get to the bottom of this - please help me! And this is the short version !
