Known Recall Investigations
  • Loss of motive power investigation # DP22003

The national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) received a letter dated july 13, 2022, petitioning the agency to initiate a safety defect investigation into loss of motive power allegations attributed to oil drain pan assembly failures on certain hyundai motor america, inc. And kia america, inc. Vehicles spanning model years (my) 2005-2021. The petitioners cited examples of complaints indicating that the subject vehicles were experiencing rapid loss of engine oil due to oil drain plug back outs, resulting in loss of motive power and/or catastrophic engine damage. Additional complaints were provided which alleged that the oil drain pans lack sufficient structural integrity and are susceptible to cracking. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745. On september 12, 2022, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened defect petition (dp22-003) to evaluate the petitioners’ request. The petitioners have provided additional complaints within four supplemental letters dated january 31, 2023, march 21, 2023, may 23, 2023, and august 4, 2023. Odi’s evaluation included the review and analysis of the complaints and supporting information submitted by the petitioners, as well as additional complaints submitted directly to nhtsa which referenced either the oil drain plug or a crack in the oil pan. After reviewing the available data, odi has not identified evidence that would support opening a defect investigation into the oil drain pan assemblies of the subject vehicles. Based on a review of the available information, a loss of motive power resulting from an oil drain plug back out has not occurred between the initial sale of a vehicle and the completion of its first oil change. If during an oil change service, a technician fails to remove the existing drain plug gasket before installing a new gasket, it is likely that a proper seal between the drain plug and the oil pan will not be made. An improper seal between the drain plug and oil pan could lead to the backing out on the drain plug, resulting in the sudden loss of oil while driving. Additionally, the provided examples of oil pan cracks were localized to the immediate vicinity of the oil drain plug and/or appeared to be the result of direct-contact with a tool during servicing.  there is no information to support that a vehicle-based defect exists relating to the oil pan assembly, and instead the documented incidents are related to the failure to follow the proper maintenance procedures during oil change service. In october 2023, hyundai published a technical service bulletin (tsb) that provided detailed instructions for oil change service on its gasoline powered vehicles, specifically highlighting the need to remove and replace the existing drain plug gasket prior to reinstalling the drain plug. After a thorough review of the material submitted by the petitioner, the information already in nhtsas possession, and the potential risks to motor vehicle safety implicated by the petitioners allegations, nhtsa does not believe that a formal investigation is warranted. Therefore, the petition is denied. A federal register notice (frn) further detailing nhtsa’s reasons for denial of the petition will be published. The reference numbers for the complaints to nhtsa cited by the petitioner can be found in the petition submission documents in the public file for dp22-003. To review those complaints and the additional complaints odi added to its evaluation which are cited in the closing resume odi report identification number document, go to nhtsa.Gov.

  • Engine fires investigation # EA21003

In 2017, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two recall queries (rq17-003 and 004) following multiple recall actions initiated by hyundai and kia for “theta ii” engine-equipped vehicles. The rqs were opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of the recalls as well as the compliance of each company to meet their reporting requirements established under the motor vehicle safety act. Numerous violations of the requirements were found for both companies, and in on november 20, 2020, both companies entered into consent orders with nhtsa to resolve nhtsa’s assertions of violations of law. Both consent orders remain in effect. In 2018, the center for automotive safety (cas) petitioned the agency under defect petition (dp) 18-003 to investigate non-crash fires on various hyundai and kia models, citing 120 voqs alleging vehicle fires at varying points of origin and occurring under various non-crash related circumstances (including key-off fires). In opening dp18-003, odi noted that many of the 120 fire incidents appeared to originate in the engine compartment area and made reference to the two open rq investigations as likely pertinent. Odi issued information request (ir) letters to hyundai and kia and several peer oems in its efforts to properly evaluate and disposition cas’ petition. After reviewing responses to the dp requests, odi granted cas’ petition and in 2019 opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 and 19-004, one for each company) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai (sonata and santa fe) and kia (optima, sorento and soul) models. Odi issued additional, more broadly scoped ir letters to both hyundai and kia, which upon review, identified certain vehicle populations exhibiting higher rates of non-crash fires for various defects and points of origin, including some due to engine failure. To date, hyundai and kia have issued several recallsto address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failure involving various engine types (theta ii gdi, theta ii mpi, theta ii mpi hev, nu gdi, and gamma gdi). The remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement. Additionally, both manufacturers are installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure). Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). They have even replaced engines if the ksds software detects an impending engine failure. The 78 voqs cited above, which all involve fires likely due to engine failure, consist of 36 remedy-related and 42 scope-related incidents. The injury allegations involve eye and burn injuries not requiring medical treatment. With the 83 other voqs, odi is aware of 161 fires potentially due to engine failures. The downloadable version of the resume available at nhtsa.Gov contains additional information on the recall actions and id numbers for the voqs. The office of defects investigation (odi) is opening this engineering analysis for two primary purposes. First, the investigation will continue to evaluate the scope of recalls initially begun under prior odi actions (see below), and will also include other recalls for fires due to engine failures, which hyundai and kia have subsequently launched (many influenced by odi investigations). Second, the investigation will monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the recall remedies for engine fire related recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.

Bought 2017 tucson sport new. Within a few months i notice the acceleration was diminished and the vehicle paused when pressing down on gas pedal. Dealer assured me it was related to the dual clutch. Fast forward to april 2019 and the issue never resolved itself and ultimately resulted in a thrown rod. Engine was replaced. Dec 2020 car shakes violently on highway brought back to the shop dealer claims nothing is wrong. June 4th have oil changed per schedule by jun9 i am smelling smoke upon exiting car. Check oil and it is on low. Drop off at dealer they claim nothing is wrong. Force me to pay for another oil change and perform a 500 mile oil consumption test which will involve me driving this car on the highway with an engine that can seize at any moment potentially killing me or others on the road. Leave dealership and the car continues to spew smoke from tail pipe. No check engine lights appear during either event. This is incredibly dangerous and needs to be added to a lawsuit. Hyundai knows this is an issue but they do nothing and people will die.

Back rear door suddenly stopped opening. Door is unlocked but will not open from the inside or outside. Upon googling the issue, it appears that many people have this issue with this car and are being charged astronomical amounts to fix it. Not being able to open the car door from the inside is an obvious safety issue.

Yesterday my rear passenger door on the driver's side stopped opening from the inside and outside. The door was unlocked and not on child lock. There is no way opening this door at the moment! It is a safety concern in case of an emergency and passengers must exit quickly! There are no warning lamps and i read on forums that it is a known problem yet hyundai is charging a fee to diagnose the problem. If this is happening to many vehicles please make it a recall!

We had a recent onset of issues with our 2017 tucson limited ultimate that is alarming and potentially dangerous. I am most concerned with the safety of my wife and child as this is her primary vehicle. We have a new issue, relating to the door locks - that i would like to address, but would like to give the recent history or events before i get to that. We recently addressed a recall relating to a brake module - a potential fire hazard, as well as failed turbo that caused a sudden loss of power at a critical time. This could have been a potential wreck, but thankfully it was avoided. Now we are at another safety issue that needs to be addressed with the door locks. This is concerning, inconvenient, and most likely not covered as a recall as it should be. Around 6 months ago there was a sudden power loss and whistling sound from the engine compartment. This happened while entering a turn in a busy intersection, which could have caused an accident. I took it to the dealer, and the problem was diagnosed as a faulty turbo charger and required order and replacement. Luckily this was covered on the warranty. The problem was resolved. Then i received a notification of a recall for the brake control module because of the potential of fire in the engine compartment. I scheduled an appointment at my local dealer and had that replaced at no additional cost to me. My local dealership was about to resolve this issue as well. Today, i went to take my daughter to school and the rear passenger door would not open from the outside or the inside. The door lock clicks, but we are not able to exit the vehicle from that side or open the door from the outside. Upon researching on the internet, it's a ongoing issue with the door actuator. Https://www.Hyundai-forums.Com/threads/rear-passenger-door-wont-open.603329/ i scheduled an appointment for monday, but it is again, a safety issue, and this will not be covered and most likely cost me out of pocket. Can you help?

Hyundai tucson 2.0l (nu gdi) is leaking engine oil between engine and transmision. Vehicle previously had the same condition and it was sent to dealership around november 2019, they removed the transmission and installed a new crankshaft oil seal. Previous oil change maintentance was done by a hyundai dealer and they didn't notify the issue. Now when i checked the engine and touched the area, i got engine oil. Now i will check how i can send the car to the dealership because i'm having issues with the warranty of the car because if i go to another hyundai dealership and they check that the car wasn't bought with them, they gime me a extremelly long date to check the car after that they won't fix. Also they don't like to get warranty claims or recalls during weekends. And to make matters worse the dealer where i bought it brand new and completed the warranty claim (crankshaft seal) has changed the ownership and they say that the car records doesn't appear in their systems. I would never buy another car from this company again.

The turbo is going out which causes the vehicle not to accelerate. The repair shop also mentioned if the turbo goes out completely it will cause engine damage.

Door smart key button has broken (driver's & front passenger's door) user is unable to lock/unlock the car. User must use the beeper or key to unlock/lock the car. Went to dealership and the told me that the car has been forced by someone because is very easy to steal. Went to another place and they basically told me that the button broke from usage not by forcing it to enter the car and part is very weak. Vehicle has been indoors and other vehicles doesn't. Car company could knew the issue as the new redesigned model has a touchscreen handle to unlock.Lock the car.
