• Recall 150219 [USA]: A damaged engine can increase the risk of a fire or it can cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2015-2016 veloster, 2012 santa fe, 2011-2013 sonata hybrid, and 2016 sonata hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which over time can result in engine damage.
  hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new knock sensor detection system (ksds). Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began march 31, 2021. • Recall 2021674 [Canada]: Engine
  Issue: hyundai auto canada is conducting a product improvement campaign that provides an update to the engine control module to detect potential problems before an engine fails. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: this only affects santa fe models equipped with a 2.4 l mpi engine, and veloster models with a 1.6 l gdi engine. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of an accident. An engine failure could also create the risk of a fire. Corrective actions: hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the engine control module. Note: hyundai recommends that you should always follow the correct vehicle maintenance schedule, which is printed in the owner's manual. If you experience unusual engine noise, reduced power, or a check engine/oil warning light, hyundai advises you to immediately visit a hyundai dealership to have your vehicle diagnosed.

• Recall 2020592 [Canada]: Engine
  Issue: on certain vehicles equipped with a 1.6 l gdi, 2.0 l gdi, or 2.4 l mpi engine, the connecting rod bearings could wear prematurely. As a result, there could be an abnormal knocking noise from the engine and/or the oil pressure warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with worn connecting rod bearings, the engine could fail. An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. In some cases, a damaged connecting rod could puncture the engine block and cause an oil leak. Note: for the sonata model, only the sonata hybrid and plug-in hybrid (phev) models are affected by this recall. Additional note: engine compartment fires can happen for many different reasons. In some cases, there is too much damage to find the cause of a fire. Safety risk: a sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Oil that leaks onto a hot component could cause a fire. Corrective actions: hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer for an engine inspection test, to determine if there is bearing damage. If damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also update the software for the engine control module. • Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  In 2017, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two recall queries (rq17-003 and 004) following multiple recall actions initiated by hyundai and kia for “theta ii” engine-equipped vehicles. The rqs were opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of the recalls as well as the compliance of each company to meet their reporting requirements established under the motor vehicle safety act. Numerous violations of the requirements were found for both companies, and in on november 20, 2020, both companies entered into consent orders with nhtsa to resolve nhtsa’s assertions of violations of law. Both consent orders remain in effect.In 2018, the center for automotive safety (cas) petitioned the agency under defect petition (dp) 18-003 to investigate non-crash fires on various hyundai and kia models, citing 120 voqs alleging vehicle fires at varying points of origin and occurring under various non-crash related circumstances (including key-off fires). In opening dp18-003, odi noted that many of the 120 fire incidents appeared to originate in the engine compartment area and made reference to the two open rq investigations as likely pertinent. Odi issued information request (ir) letters to hyundai and kia and several peer oems in its efforts to properly evaluate and disposition cas’ petition.After reviewing responses to the dp requests, odi granted cas’ petition and in 2019 opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 and 19-004, one for each company) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai (sonata and santa fe) and kia (optima, sorento and soul) models. Odi issued additional, more broadly scoped ir letters to both hyundai and kia, which upon review, identified certain vehicle populations exhibiting higher rates of non-crash fires for various defects and points of origin, including some due to engine failure.To date, hyundai and kia have issued several recallsto address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failure involving various engine types (theta ii gdi, theta ii mpi, theta ii mpi hev, nu gdi, and gamma gdi). The remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement. Additionally, both manufacturers are installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure). Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). They have even replaced engines if the ksds software detects an impending engine failure.The 78 voqs cited above, which all involve fires likely due to engine failure, consist of 36 remedy-related and 42 scope-related incidents. The injury allegations involve eye and burn injuries not requiring medical treatment. With the 83 other voqs, odi is aware of 161 fires potentially due to engine failures. First, the investigation will continue to evaluate the scope of recalls initially begun under prior odi actions (see below), and will also include other recalls for fires due to engine failures, which hyundai and kia have subsequently launched (many influenced by odi investigations). Second, the investigation will monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the recall remedies for engine fire related recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.

Engine has a knock to it, and only drove it for about 5 month's

Nothing has happened yet, my vin was just associated with the recall and i want to get it checked

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 hyundai veloster. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine). The contact stated that while driving and coming to a stop, the vehicle loss motive power and stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who had replaced the engine previously due to an oil change that was serviced incorrectly. The independent mechanic informed the contact that the vehicle was over the 12,000 mils warranty coverage for the engine. The vehicle was then towed to automax hyundai (3221 e central texas expy, killeen, tx 76543) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the vehicle showed the symptoms of the recall however, since the original engine had been replaced, the manufacturer would not honor the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 114,000.

While driving 60 miles an hour on the interstate heading to work i begin to hear a knocking from my engine. I put my flashers on and begin to slow down because i begin to smell smoke. I was able to navigate into the nearest gas station and turn the car off. When i tried to restart the car it would not turn over. I checked the oil just to make sure because of the smell and the oil was depleted. I put three layers of oil into my car so i could get it started enough to get it to the express oil change nearby. I dropped my car off there and they performed a diagnostic test where they informed me that the engine had failed. I made a service appointment with my dealer who finally contacted me back today saying they would take a look at the car and let me know if it was part of the recall. I was never notified by hyundai or my dealership that my engine was recalled. I currently am without a car and was told that a service vehicle may be provided if it's deemed that my engine failed due to the recalled issue. I have already spent $200 in uber rides.
