• Recall 243950 [USA]: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 elantra, genesis coupe, sonata hybrid, 2012-2015 accent, azera, veloster, 2013-2015 elantra coupe, santa fe, 2014-2015 equus, 2010-2012 veracruz, 2010-2013 tucson, 2015 tucson fuel cell, and 2013 santa fe sport vehicles. The anti-lock brake system (abs) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
  owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the abs fuse, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed november 1, 2023. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available beginning april 2024. • Recall 128816 [USA]: If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.

On february 27, 2018, hyundai motor company (hyundai) notified nhtsa that they were recalling 154,753 model year 2011 sonata vehicles. In the event of a crash, the air bag control unit (acu) may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags from deploying.

  Hyundai motor america (hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 sonata vehicles manufactured december 11, 2009, to april 12, 2012 at hyundai motor manufacturing alabama and equipped with either a 2.0 liter or 2.4 liter gasoline direct injection engine. In the affected vehicles, metallic debris may not have been fully removed during manufacturing of the engine crankshaft. If the debris was not completely removed, oil flow may be restricted through the connecting rod bearings, causing connecting rod damage. A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure.

  Affected vehicles might experience and electrical short inside the abs control module. On the affected vehicles moisture can enter the abs module electrical system. For the sonata model, only the sonata hybrid is affected by this campaign. All vehicles previously included in tc # 2021-033 are now part of this new campaign. Vehicles that were previously repaired under campaign r0181 (transport canada #2021-033) do not require this software update.   On certain vehicles, the connections between the front seat belts and the floor mounted seat belt anchor pretensioners may not have been attached properly during assembly. This could result in a front seat belt possibly detaching from the anchor pretensioner.   On certain vehicles, the engine crankshaft may not have been properly cleaned to remove metallic debris during manufacturing. If the debris is not completely removed from the crankshaft’s oil passages, it can be forced into the connecting rod oiling passages restricting oil flow to the bearings, increasing the potential of premature bearing wear. If the vehicle continues to be driven with a worn connecting rod bearing, the bearing could fail, which could cause an engine stall while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in loss of motive power which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. A worn connecting rod bearing could also result in the illumination of the oil pressure lamp in the instrument cluster. Correction: dealers will inspect, and if necessary, replace the engine assembly. Hyundai will also increase the warranty for the engine sub-assembly (short block) to 10 years/200,000 kilometers for both original and subsequent owners of 2011 and 2012 sonatas.

  On certain vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, the shift cable may detach from the shift lever. As a result, the driver may not be able to select a different gear position, or place the transmission in the park position.   The office of defects investigation (odi) has received eight hyundai motor america (hyundai) and eight kia america, inc. (kia) part 573 recall reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (abs) modules or hydraulic electronic control units (hecu) manufactured by the equipment supplier mando. The part 573 recall reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by mando.   Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). • Loss of motive power investigation # DP22003

  The office of defects investigation (odi) has received a petition on july 13, 2022, requesting a defect investigation into an alleged defect of the "oil drain pan assemblies" on the following 83 models/model year vehicles stated by the petitioner: 2006-2019 hyundai sonata, 2013-2018 hyundai santa fe sport, 2010-2012 and 2019-2020 hyundai santa fe, 2010-2015 and 2018-2019 hyundai tucson, 2011-2021 kia sportage 2005-2020 kia optima, 2011-2020 kia sorento, 2010-2013 kia forte, 2010-2013,kia forte coup, and 2007-2010 kia rondo vehicles equipped with the 1.6l t-gdi gamma, 2.4l theta ii gdi, 2.4l in-line gdi theta ii, kappa, and 3.8l v-shaped gdi lambda-ii engines. The petition also cites additional hyundai/kia vehicles that use similar drain pan assemblies as the above-mentioned vehicles as having drain pan assembly failures. The petitioner provided subject and peer vehicles information related to alleged engine failures. The petition itself can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11481745.According to the petition, the hyundai/kia vehicle owners have made allegations of oil leakage failures occurring at highway speeds, without malfunction, indicator lights, or the leakage associated with under-tightening an oil drain plug, or a plug or pan with damaged thread. The alleged defects are causing engines to seize and loss of motive power. A defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition. The petitioner identified a number of complaints received by nhtsa alleging complete engine failure from a variety of models stated above along with other models. • Engine fires investigation # EA21003

  In 2017, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened two recall queries (rq17-003 and 004) following multiple recall actions initiated by hyundai and kia for “theta ii” engine-equipped vehicles. The rqs were opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of the recalls as well as the compliance of each company to meet their reporting requirements established under the motor vehicle safety act. Numerous violations of the requirements were found for both companies, and in on november 20, 2020, both companies entered into consent orders with nhtsa to resolve nhtsa’s assertions of violations of law. Both consent orders remain in effect.In 2018, the center for automotive safety (cas) petitioned the agency under defect petition (dp) 18-003 to investigate non-crash fires on various hyundai and kia models, citing 120 voqs alleging vehicle fires at varying points of origin and occurring under various non-crash related circumstances (including key-off fires). In opening dp18-003, odi noted that many of the 120 fire incidents appeared to originate in the engine compartment area and made reference to the two open rq investigations as likely pertinent. Odi issued information request (ir) letters to hyundai and kia and several peer oems in its efforts to properly evaluate and disposition cas’ petition.After reviewing responses to the dp requests, odi granted cas’ petition and in 2019 opened two preliminary evaluations (pe19-003 and 19-004, one for each company) to broadly investigate incidents of non-crash fires (regardless of origin or operational status of the vehicle) on various model year hyundai (sonata and santa fe) and kia (optima, sorento and soul) models. Odi issued additional, more broadly scoped ir letters to both hyundai and kia, which upon review, identified certain vehicle populations exhibiting higher rates of non-crash fires for various defects and points of origin, including some due to engine failure.To date, hyundai and kia have issued several recallsto address vehicle fires, including those due to engine failure involving various engine types (theta ii gdi, theta ii mpi, theta ii mpi hev, nu gdi, and gamma gdi). The remedies for the engine failure recalls typically involve engine inspection (to detect existing damage), and if necessary, engine replacement. Additionally, both manufacturers are installing an engine control software modification known as knock sensor detection software (ksds) which is intended to detect impending engine failure, alert the driver, and limit engine power (to lessen likelihood of engine failure). Ksds is being installed under recalls and non-safety field actions, and both companies have extended limited engine warranties (see recall files). They have even replaced engines if the ksds software detects an impending engine failure.The 78 voqs cited above, which all involve fires likely due to engine failure, consist of 36 remedy-related and 42 scope-related incidents. The injury allegations involve eye and burn injuries not requiring medical treatment. With the 83 other voqs, odi is aware of 161 fires potentially due to engine failures. First, the investigation will continue to evaluate the scope of recalls initially begun under prior odi actions (see below), and will also include other recalls for fires due to engine failures, which hyundai and kia have subsequently launched (many influenced by odi investigations). Second, the investigation will monitor and evaluate the efficacy of the recall remedies for engine fire related recalls, as well as the long-term viability of related programs and non-safety field actions being conducted by hyundai and kia.

• Throttle control system vulnerabilities investigation # DP21003

  The office of defects investigation of the national highway traffic safety administration received a petition letter dated october 10, 2021 requesting an investigation of an alleged defect(s) in the electronic throttle control system in certain model year (my) 2005-2016 kia optima/k5, my 2006-2015 kia sorento, my 2007-2016 hyundai elantra, my 2007-2016 hyundai santa fe, my 2006-2015 hyundai sonata vehicles. The petition was filed as a vehicle owner questionnaire that can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under reference (odi) number 11439675. The petitioners allege the subject vehicles exhibit a range of dangerous vehicle speed control problems including sudden uncommanded acceleration, runaway throttle conditions, surging, stalling and loss of motive power, all due to various defects and vulnerabilities in the electronic throttle control system.This defect petition has been opened to evaluate the allegation and determine whether to grant or deny the petitioners request.

• Non-crash vehicle fires investigation # PE19003

  In a letter dated jun 11, 2018, the center for auto safety (cas) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a safety defect investigation into non-collision related fires on model year (my) 2011-2014 kia optima and sorento, and hyundai sonata and santa fe vehicles.In a letter dated july 24, 2018, cas requested that my 2010-2015 kia soul vehicles be added to the petition.Cas stated that there is a higher number of complaints to nhtsa regarding non-crash fires on these vehicles compared to other similar vehicles.The office of defects investigation (odi) had already opened a recall query (rq17-004) on all hyundai vehicles equipped with theta ii engines for engine failures that may cause stalling and fires.The query covers most of the petition subject sonata and santa fe vehicles.On august 21, 2018, odi opened a defect petition (dp18-003) to evaluate whether to grant or deny the cas petition.Odi sent an information request letter to hyundai (september 2018) requesting information on all engine and non-engine related fires in the petition hyundai vehicles.Odi performed extensive analysis on the information obtained from hyundai.During the dp18-003 analysis, hyundai initiated three additional safety recalls related to engine compartment fires on certain petitioned and non-petitioned vehicles, (nearly 240,000 total vehicles: recalls 18v-934, 19v-063, and 19v-204). In addition to engine compartment fires, odi has received allegations of vehicle fires affecting other components, including taillight housings, taillight wire harnesses, and/or light bulbs. Based on odis review of the applicable materials, including responses to information requests sent to multiple manufacturers, vehicle owner questionnaires (voq), and early warning data, nhtsa has decided to grant the petition.The petition is hereby granted. A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of alleged defects relating to non-collision vehicle fires in the 2011-2014 sonata and 2011-2014 santa fe.While prior recalls of vehicles covered by this pe have primarily related to engine fires, nhtsas preliminary evaluation is not limited to engine components and may cover additional vehicle systems or components as well.Attached is a list of the reference numbers for the 160 voqs cited above.

• Air bags may be disabled during crash investigation # PE18003

  The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe18-003 on 3/16/18 to investigate incidents involving crashes, resulting in significant collision related damage, where the frontal airbags failed to deploy. Odi reviewed complaint data, available design, test, and field data on the model year (my) 2011 hyundai sonata, my 2012-2013 kia forte and forte koup vehicles. Odi also evaluated data from the automotive air bag system supplier, zf-trw (zf), to review vehicles that may contain the same air bag control unit (acu) used in the subject vehicles. Hyundai motor america (hma) issued recall no. 18v-137 for my 2011-2013 sonata and my 2012 sonata hybrid vehicles. Kia motors america (kma) issued recall no. 18v-363 for my 2010-2013 kia forte and forte koup, my 2011-2013 optima, my 2011-2012 optima hybrid, and my2011-2012 sedona vehicles. The two recalls address vehicles containing acus manufactured without adequate circuit protection by installing a wire harness filter kit to prevent internal damage to the acu. In the event of a crash, acu damage may result in the disablement of the vehicles airbags. Each respective manufacturer has mailed letters to affected vehicle owners informing them of the remedy and its availability. Odi plans to evaluate the susceptibility of the subject acu to electrical signals, as well as other vehicle factors that can either lead to, or reduce the likelihood of, an electrical overstress event in other vehicles manufactured with the subject zf acu.Accordingly, this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea19-001), to expand the scope of the investigation to include the tier-one supplier and any manufacturers who installed the subject acu in production vehicles. • Scope and timeliness investigation # RQ17004

  On september 10, 2015, hyundai motor america (hyundai) filed a defect information report (dir) recalling 470,000 my 2011 and 2012 sonata vehicles with “"theta ii" engines (recall no. 15v-568). Hyundais dir described the defect as an issue involving manufacturing debris. Hyundai limited the population of recalled vehicles to those produced on or prior to april 12, 2012, stating that a process change in april 2012 resolved the issue of manufacturing debris. On march 31, 2017, hyundai expanded its original recall to include 572,000 my 2013-2014 sonata and santa fe sport vehicles with "theta ii" engines (recall no. 17v-226). The dir continues to describe the defect as an issue involving manufacturing debris.This rq is being opened to investigate both the timeliness and scope of hyundais "theta ii" engine recalls, and hyundais compliance with reporting requirements.

On 05/26/21 this vehicle was taken to crown hyundai for an engine recall and was not running. In fact, since purchased at the auction it has never ran more than 30 feet then suts off. Tech said, computer responded with a faulty wheel sensor, a dead battery, and fault abs sensor. I picked up the car and put new battery in it, and a left rear wheel sensor and reported by hyundai. Our mechanic said take back to hyundai to reset the abs sensor, so on06/24/21 we did return the vehicle to crown hyundai and was tolk now they could not set the sensor as the battery was the wrong type, now a code for a flap door and an allegation of the vehicle being wrecked in the front end causing door damage. My right headlight has always been loose but no damage. Now the computer says the door plap and front bumper damage is causing 30 more defaults to pop up my wrecker driver will tell you the car was not driving but would start and move until sensor shut down. Now it will not start or move and more sensors are being shown.. Service manager said ,, i cannot tell you not to fix it, but there are more codes poping up now... There is something wrong with this picture... He said he has several more hydrid's sitting in the back that also show many codes.

When driving in the car at any speed over 40 mph, the brake override will engage at random moments and slow the car down about 20 mph immediately. This makes the car extremely unsafe to drive especially on freeways because when going the speed limit of 60 mph, the car will suddenly slow down with no warning to me, the driver, and the car driving behind my car, also going 60 mph or more, will then have to slow down to my speed just as fast if not faster to avoid hitting the back of my car at an excessive speed. This problem first appeared around july 6th, 2021 and has been an ongoing and worsening issue since then. There is a similar recall that has been put out on other cars, but my car has not been included in that recall even though this is clearly a problem affecting my model as well. I ask that my model be added to the recall list to avoid other people possibly getting into an accident.

Driving in traffic in town and accelerator pedal quit working. Deceleration happened until i went from 40 mph to 2mph. Then able to accelerate back up to 30mph and happened again until i coasted to a stop. Traction control light came on after second incident. Car was in park and still on. Turned car off, took key outside vehicle and exited vehicle. Car locked itself and brake lights came on and stayed on. This is a danger!!! Can cause an accident, driver has no control over vehicle at random times. Traumatic and scared to drive vehicle now.

Brake lights stay illuminated when car is off. Loses speed while in motion. Esc lights come on.

Air bag light won’t turn off

While driving on 285 @ 60 mph the car begins alarming with a hazard light indicating emergency braking system failure then the car looses complete braking capabilities and power to drive, all while i am in front of an 18 wheeler. I have practically no control over the stirring wheel as the car has completely lost all power all i could do is throw on my hazard lights and pray that the truck sees me then i begin to coast off to the side of the highway. In 2019 the engine seized up and did the exact same thing lost total power on the highway, the engine was replaced in 2019. In 2020 the transmission was causing problems and was replaced as well, this vehicle is a death trap and i truly fear for mines and my child’s life when driving it. I have never ever really feel safe in this car after my engine failure it left with in total paranoia with it loosing total power and leaving me without control to get out the way of on coming traffic thank goodness the trucker behind me noticed i was in distress and i was able to coast off to the side. I have googled and seen that there has been many others who have had this exact same problem with the braking system. Hyundai needs to recall these vehicles for this braking problems so no has to loose there lives behind it. Please please, please help me and the others that have these issues to get this matter resolved. Every since i have gotten this car it has had nothing but major issues in my eyes it should be deemed a lemon. Please advise

Dear to whom it may concern, my cars vin: [xxx] there is a recall (nhtsa recall number20v746000) that i found on this website for my car that the dealership below is claiming is not correct and will not work on. Springfield hyundai address: 754 baltimore pike, springfield, pa 19064 my car has been having engine issue even after it getting services at another hyundai dealership service center. Engine overheats and smoke came out several times. Not it is jerking while i drive - loosing power. I barely was able to get the car to the service, that is how bad the state of the engine is at the moment. Initially when i took the car to the service center they said there is no recall at all on my car, even though the hyundai customer service agent acknowledged the recall i mentioned above. After some push back from me, the service agent at the center said there was a recall but not the one i mention above a different one.
