(May 2016)
MACK CHU and CXU models equipped with sleeper cab and without side air deflectors, built
between May 5, 2014 and May 16, 2016, did not come with lower exhaust elbow shields. If
these vehicles have or are later equipped with rear PTO, the operator may be exposed to
high temperature exhaust components. Customers have raised concerns about having a heat
shield on previous model units. There is concern that the operator may accidently contact the
exhaust when working behind the cab

Procedure
You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in Service Information,
Function Group 20, “Engine Safety Practices” before performing this procedure. If you are not
properly trained and certified in this procedure, ask your supervisor for training before you
perform it.
1 Secure the vehicle for service by parking it on a flat level surface, applying the parking
brake, chocking the rear wheels, and placing the transmission in neutral or park.
2 Loosely install brackets on exhaust pipe. Use heat shield to position brackets.
Note: Slotted holes at the top.

3 Secure heat shield to brackets.

4 Tighten mounting bracket bolts to 40 ±5 Nm (30 ±4 lb-ft).
5 Secure heat shield bolts.
6 Tighten heat shield bolts to 24 Nm (18 lb-ft).
7 Remove the wheel chocks.
