Rattle From Headliner
SYMPTOM
There is a rattling coming from the headliner, near the
moonroof.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
One or more of the headliner stiffeners has detached
from the headliner.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Reattach headliner stiffeners.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
• SRS components are located in this area. Review
the SRS component locations and the precautions
and procedures before doing repairs or service.
• Put on gloves to protect your hands.
• Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to
avoid damage when removing components.
• Take care not to bend or scratch the headliner.
• Be careful not to damage the dashboard and other
interior trim.
• If any clips are damaged, replace them.
The following electronic service manual procedures
have been used in full or in part within this service
bulletin. For more detail on these procedures, and
torque specifications for some components, refer to the
appropriate electronic service manual.
• A-pillar trim, both sides
• Front seat belt upper anchor, both sides
• B-pillar lower trim, both sides
• B-pillar upper trim, both sides
• Quarter pillar trim, both sides
• Sunvisors, both sides
• Sunvisor holders, both sides
• Grab handles, four places
• Rear individual map light
• Center second row seat belt cover
• RES display cover (if equipped)
• Roof console
1. If necessary, remove the remaining roof console
clips from the body and the moonroof frame.

2. Disconnect the roof wire harness connector.

3. With RES: Detach the harness clips from the right
A-pillar.
5. Lower the headliner:
• Adjust the steering column all the way down and
inward.
• Move both front seats all the way back, and
recline the seat-back about 45 degrees.
• Pull down to detach, but do not remove
completely, the front and rear door opening seals
from each roof portion.
• Detach the four clips along the front edge of the
moonroof opening.
• With the help of an assistant, release the
fasteners along the sides and rear of the
moonroof opening.

4. With RES: Disconnect the RES wire harness
connector from the rear controller and screen.

6. Lower the front half of the headliner down just far
enough to work on the stiffeners. Adjust the
position of the front seat-backs and head rests, if
necessary, to allow the headliner to rest on the
front headrests.
NOTE: Be careful when lowering the headliner to
avoid creasing and damaging it.

7. Mark the headliner on two edges of the stiffener to
show its location.
9. Attach the stiffener to the headliner using
3M DP 100 epoxy. Make sure the epoxy wraps
around the top ends of the stiffener as shown.
NOTE: The working time for the epoxy is
5 minutes.

8. Remove the old epoxy from the detached portion of
the stiffener and the headliner. If the stiffener is still
partially attached, do not remove it from the
headliner.
Lift detached end of stiffener.

10. If any other stiffeners are loose, repeat steps 8–10
for each loose stiffener.

11. Move both front seats fully forward, and return the
seat-backs to the fully upright position. Allow the
headliner to rest on the headrests while the
adhesive dries; it may be necessary to raise the
headrests.
NOTE: Make sure the stiffeners do not separate
from the headliner while the epoxy is drying. Allow
the epoxy to dry a minimum of 1 hour before
reassembling the headliner.
13. Raise the headliner:
• With the help of an assistant, reattach the right
side sunvisor holder, then the left side.
• Reattach the front four clips of the moonroof
opening.
• Reattach the side fasteners, then the rear
fasteners of the moonroof opening.
• Reinstall the B-pillar and the A-pillar trim.
• Reattach the front and rear door opening seals.

12. To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying
improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the
removed pieces and replace them if they have any
of these types of damage:
• Any crease or tears in the headliner
• Any cracks or breakages in the grab handle
• Any damage around the grab handle holes or
sunvisor holes in the headliner
• Any cracks in the sunvisor stay base
• Any bends or cracks in the sunvisor stay shaft
• Any cracks or breaks in the vanity mirror base
• Any fasteners and clip bases that have come off
the headliner

14. With RES:
• Reconnect the RES connector to the rear
controller and screen.
• Reattach the harness clips to the right A-pillar.
15. Reconnect the roof wire harness connector.
16. Reinstall all remaining removed parts in the reverse
order of removal.
