PURPOSE
Some vehicles may exhibit an oil leak from the rocker cover. This may be caused by an insufficient
quantity of FIPG (Formed in Place Gasket) applied during production. This TSB provides guidelines for
reinstalling the rocker cover, including proper application of FIPG, when replacing the rocker cover
gasket in the event of an oil leak.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2014 - 2016 Outlander equipped with 4-cylinder 2.4L engines, built before the following VIN:

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove the rocker cover assembly and gasket.
Follow Service Manual instructions: Group 11 - Engine > Engine Mechanical > Rocker Cover
Assembly > Removal and Installation.

3.0 ± 1.0 N⋅m then 5.5 ± 0.5 N⋅m
(27 ± 8 in−lb then 49 ± 4 in−lb)

2. Completely remove the existing liquid gasket adhering to the rocker cover, timing chain case, and
cylinder head.
3. Degrease all contact areas where the gasket and liquid gasket are applied.
4. Install the new rocker cover gasket and new rocker cover oil seal onto the rocker cover.

NOTE: Be prepared to reinstall the rocker cover immediately after the liquid gasket is applied.
5. Apply the liquid gasket (p/n 1000A923) paying attention to the details below.
a. Apply the liquid gasket in a uniform bead with a thickness of 4 mm (0.2 inch) diameter.
NOTE: Do not use an excess amount so that the liquid gasket does not ooze out after the rocker cover
is reinstalled.
b. Apply liquid gasket at rear of engine as shown in the illustration below.

Apply a 4 mm thick bead at the base of the arch.

Apply a 4 mm diameter bead along the arch, about 3 mm from the edge, to a height of 20 mm
above the cylinder head (View D).

Apply a 10 mm diameter bead at the bottom of the arch as shown (View A).

6. Reinstall the rocker cover.
! CAUTION
Install along the spark plug guide while being to careful not to damage the spark
plug guide oil seal.
a. Raise the exhaust side of the rocker cover, and
insert it at an angle along the spark plug guide.
! CAUTION
Ensure that the rocker cover is properly seated. If the rocker cover is seated on the
cylinder head at a slight diagonal along the spark plug guide, the sealant, which is applied at the joint
between the cylinder head and the timing chain case, will be misaligned. This may cause oil leakage.
b. Hold the rocker cover horizontally right before
seating it on the cylinder head.
c. Lower the rocker cover vertically to seat it on the
cylinder head.
NOTE: Do NOT slide the cover horizontally into position.

7. Tighten the bolts in the order shown in the illustration.

8. Then tighten the bolts again in the same order to the
torque below.

Torque: 3.0 ± 1.0 N-m (27 ± 8 in.-lb)
Torque: 5.5 ± 0.5 N-m (49 ± 4 in.-lb)

9. Reinstall remaining components per Service Manual instructions.
10. Test drive and confirm there is no oil leakage at the rocker cover.
