Issue
Symptom:
• External oil leaks originating from a cracked rocker lever cover.
Root Cause:
• Oxygen sensor branch of wiring harness is pinched between rocker lever cover and
rocker housing during removal and installation of rocker lever cover. See Figure 1
below.
• Capscrew 11 and/or 14 is/are still installed when attempting to remove rocker lever
cover. See Figure 3 below for rocker lever capscrew position.

Verification
Inspect rocker lever cover near cylinder number six for:
• Cracks.
• Engine wiring harness that may be caught under rocker lever cover.
Inspect engine wiring harness for:
• Signs of pinching.
Resolution
• Verify all rocker lever cover capscrews are removed before attempting to remove
rocker lever cover from engine.
• Replace rocker lever cover if cracked. See ISX12 G CM2180 EJ Service Manual,
Bulletin 4310682. Refer to Procedure 003-011 in Section 3.

• During removal and installation of rocker lever cover, secure oxygen sensor branch of
wiring harness away from rocker lever cover to prevent wiring harness pinching
between rocker lever cover and rocker lever housing.
• When removing rocker lever cover, do not use a pry bar to break seal between rocker
lever cover and rock lever housing. A pry bar will cause damage to rocker lever
housing and rocker lever cover gasket
• A flat head screw driver can be used to assist in removal of rocker lever cover. Insert
screwdriver underneath rocker lever cover and twist, but do not pry or lift rocker lever
cover with screw driver.
