Please discard PIT4712C. The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI. Condition/Concern Some Customers may comment that their fuel gauge does not go to empty and the vehicle runs out of gas, or they may hear a fuel slosh or noise from the fuel tank area when braking or accelerating from a stop. There is a baffle in the fuel tank that may come loose and lay on the bottom of the fuel tank. If this happens, it may prevent the fuel level sensor from traveling to the bottom of the tank. This baffle may become dislodged after the vehicle has been in an accident. Recommendation/Instructions If SI diagnostics leads to replace the fuel level sensor, inspect the fuel tank for a baffle that may have come loose prior to replacing any parts. Note: The baffle may become lodged at either end of the tank. It may be necessary to tip the tank in both directions to find the loose baffle. If the fuel tank baffle is found loose in the bottom of the fuel tank, it will be necessary to replace the fuel tank. Note: Check with the customer and see if the vehicle has recently been in an accident. If the vehicle was in an accident, this repair should not be covered under warranty. If the customer claims it has not been in an accident, please submit a field product report (FPR) for this concern. Follow the latest version of TSB 02-00-89-002 for instructions on submitting an FPR. Warranty Information For vehicles repaired under warranty use: Labor Operation Description Labor Time L1260 Fuel Tank Replacement Replacement Use Published Labor Operation Time Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information. 1 WE SUPPORT VOLUNTARY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION 2
