EDITOR’S NOTE: This article revises the one posted in June 2015. Changes are highlighted in yellow.
To prevent damage during shipping, leather-wrapped steering wheels come with a protective plastic covering.
The easiest way to remove it during TQI is to grab the covering with both hands near the top of the steering wheel and
pull it toward you, like you see here. The covering comes right off.

Avoid pulling the covering away from you; it’ll get trapped behind the steering wheel and you’ll have to cut it loose. And a
word of advice: Don’t try tugging on the covering thinking you can tear it loose; it’s strong stuff and likes to stretch! If you
do that, you risk wedging the stretched plastic in the steering column and damaging the cable reel.
