Introduction
The 00016-35026 locking tailgate handle for Tacoma applications received updates to
improve reliability and durability of the product. The part number has been updated to
00016-35044 as the design of the part has changed. The purpose of this bulletin is to
assist technicians in the identification of the differences between the old and new parts
and communication of common installation issue.

Port Installed Option (PIO) ‐ is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles from the vehicle’s in‐service date, whichever
occurs first. Unless otherwise specified in vehicle VIN inquiry.
Dealer Installed Option (DIO) ‐ is in effect for 12 months, regardless of mileage, from the date the part(s) was
installed on the vehicle or the remainder of any applicable New Vehicle Limited Warranty, whichever provides greater
coverage.
Over the Counter Sale (OCS) ‐ is in effect for 12 months, regardless of mileage, from the date the part(s) were sold.
Labor is not warranted for over‐the counter service part replacements.

Repair Process
Verify correct installation
1. Remove cover from tailgate
2. Inspect the DRIVER SIDE latch Rod. The latch rod should be flipped during
Locking Tailgate handle installation. Refer to installation instructions on TIS.
*NOTE: Do not bend the Latch Rod. Bending the rod extends the effective length
of the rod causing excessive travel needed to release latch.

Revised Part
Improvements to lock handle include
 Metal linkage (rocker/controller arm) re-designed to avoid possible back-up
camera interference.
 Plastic blend of handle changed to improve overall strength.
If you find the Locking Tail Gate Handle has failed
1. Verify Latch Rods were Installed properly
2. Identify Handle

Previous design (00016-35026) Replace Lock handle assembly with
revised part 00016-35044.

If revised part 00016-35044 has failed, take a pictures of Drivers Latch
Rod and Broken Lock Handle Linkage prior to removal of handle.
Replace the Locking Tailgate Latch Assembly. Include the Pictures of
latch rod installation in an SET Dealer Product Report.
