AC Small Leak Diagnosis
Vehicle Type:
All
Model Year:
All
Symptom:
No cold air from the A/C system.
Diagnosis:
Normal diagnosis reveals very little or no refrigerant in the refrigerant circuit. No leak can be found.
Information:	Very small leaks may not be found on a normal inspection. Extra effort to locate these leaks is
required.
Procedure:
After determining that a leak cannot be found proceed as follows:

• Add 1 ounce of oil with dye to the system

• Evacuate the system

• Recharge the system

• Place a new, large, plastic garbage over each front radiator, covering it completely

• Run the A/C system while watching the high side pressure

- It will be necessary to run up the engine speed to about 2,000 rpm

• When the high side pressure reaches 400 psi:

- Reduce engine speed to idle

- Monitor high side pressure

- It the pressure drops, add enough throttle to hold the pressure at 390-400 psi for 3
minutes.

- If it continues to rise, pull away a trash bag enough to keep the high side pressure at 390400 psi for 3 minutes.

• After 3 minutes, remove the trash bags from in front of the radiators

• Let the engine idle and the high side temperature resume normal levels around 200 psi

• Shut off the engine (as long as engine coolant temp is normal)

• Inspect for leaks

• After the leak is identified, proceed with normal repair.

• The Warranty Labor operations are given in the chart below.

- “A” time will need to claimed for the time to put the trash bags over the radiator and bring
the pressure up (Approximately 5-10 minutes)
