Fresh Air Blower Inoperative
The customer may comment on the following statements:
 The fresh air blower does not work.
 The fresh air blower only runs on level 4.
 The passenger compartment does not warm up.
 The windows are steamed up from the inside.
Technician findings:
 The fresh air blower of the manual air conditioning only runs on level 4.
 The fresh air blower of the Climatronic does not work.

Technical Background
In certain conditions, during cold temperatures and snowfall, fine snow may be drawn into the HVAC blower
motor. During stationary periods and low temperatures the accumulated moisture may freeze in the blower motor
housing causing limited blower motor functionality.

Procedure for Jetta 162*:
 Remove and inspect the blower motor, see Repair Manual Group 68 Storage Compartments and Covers in
Elsa.
 Replace the blower motor only if the following conditions are found:
 Noise from blower bearings.
 Blower motor is hard to turn or binding.
 On vehicles equipped with manual HVAC system, replace the resistor for the fresh air blower if required.
 Remove the plenum chamber cover.
 Remove the air intake grille according to the repair manual.
 Position the filter housing (part number 5C6 819 343) with 3 clips (part number 7L6 133 847 A) on the
induction flange, see figure 1 and 2, red arrows.

Re-install the air intake grille with filter housing according to the repair manual.
Tip:
Check according to the vehicle identification number (see under Production) whether an installation of the closed
water deflector is necessary.
 Install an optimized water deflector (part number 5C7 819 404 A 9B9) according to the repair manual on the
right side of the plenum chamber.

Procedure for Passat NMS A32*:
 Remove and inspect the blower motor, see Repair Manual Group 68 Storage Compartments and Covers in
Elsa.

 Remove the plenum chamber cover.
 Remove the air intake grille according to the repair manual.
 Install the filter housing (part number 561 819 343) with 3 clips (part number 7L6 133 847 A) on the induction
flange, see figure example (Jetta) 1, 2 and 3, red arrows.
 If vehicle is before VIN break 1VW___A3_FC031036
 Complete repair according to Technical Service Bulletin 2037280 Water or Snow in Blower Housing.
Note:
If vehicle is built before VIN break 1VW___A3_FC031036 use only Technical Service Bulletin 2037280
Water or Snow in Blower Housing for warranty claim processing.
 If vehicle is after VIN break 1VW___A3_FC031036
 Re-install the air intake grille with filter housing according to the repair manual.
Procedure for Tiguan 5N*:
 Remove and inspect the blower motor, see Repair Manual Group 68 Storage Compartments and Covers in
Elsa.
 Replace the blower motor only if the following conditions are found:
 Noise from blower bearings.
 Blower motor is hard to turn or binding.
 On vehicles equipped with manual HVAC system, replace the resistor for the fresh air blower if required.

Note:
Check according to the vehicle identification number (see under Production) whether an installation of the closed
water deflector is necessary.
 Install an optimized closed water deflector (part number 5N1 819 404 A 9B9) according to the repair manual
on the right side of the plenum chamber.
 Re-install the air intake grille with filter housing according to the repair manual.
Procedure for Golf 5K1* Jetta SportWagen AJ5* and CC 35*:
 Remove and inspect the blower motor, see Repair Manual Group 68 Storage Compartments and Covers in
Elsa.
 Replace the blower motor only if the following conditions are found:
 Noise from blower bearings.
 Blower motor is hard to turn or binding.
 On vehicles equipped with manual HVAC system, replace the resistor for the fresh air blower if required.
 Remove the plenum chamber cover.
 Remove the air intake grille according to the repair manual.
 Install the filter housing (part number 1K0 819 343) with 3 clips (part number 7L6 133 847 A) on the induction
flange, see illustration 1, 2 and 3 red arrows.
 Re-install the air intake grille with filter housing according to the repair manual.
Note:
Please advise customer that an extreme cold weather filter has been installed on the fresh air inlet of the
HVAC system.
