Workshop findings: Engine oil is discolored light yellow or ochre brown (Figure 1). The discoloring of the engine oil can differ slightly depending on the oil type. Figure 1. Discolored oil. There may also be a reddish discoloring on the oil tank (Figure 2). Figure 2. Reddish discoloring on R8 oil tank. Technical Background To increase the product quality a contrast agent is added to the oil in some engines. As a result, leaks can be detected with UV light. Adding a contrast agent does not alter the properties of the oil.
