SITUATION
When the remote is located in the range of the Smart Opener operation may be the contactless tailgate (Smart
Opener) opens / close unintentionally from objects in the vicinity of the rear of the vehicle; for example by a gas
filling hose.
Note: If tailgate is opening unintentionally with no object in proximity of the Smart Opener sensor,
please refer to SI B51 30 16. It explains how to reprogram the vehicle to a two button tailgate unlock command.
CAUSE
Overly-sensitive Smart Opener Control Unit
CORRECTION
Replace Smart Opener Control unit with revised part number specified below.
PROCEDURE
For conditions that are similar to the situation described:
1. Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA working through corresponding test module

Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).
2. Remove and replace Smart Opener Control Unit. Refer to ISTA REP 61 35 240 Removing and installing
(replacing) Smart Opener control unit (non-contact rear lid opening)
Note: Replaced control unit does not require programming.

If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead of 00
00 006.
Refer to KSD2/AIR for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
Work time labor operation code 61 99 000 is not considered a Main labor operation. Also, since the “work time”
FRU allowance to be claimed is specified, a separate punch time is not required. However, it still requires an
explanation on the repair order and in the claim comments section.
Other Repairs
If other eligible and covered work is performed as a result of performing the ISTA diagnostics and related test
plans, claim this work with the applicable defect code and the labor operations (including diagnosis) that are
listed in the KSD2/AIR.
