Condition
Some customers may comment that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated.
The technician may find DTC P2096 set.
Cause
This condition may be caused by a software anomaly in the engine control
module (ECM).
Correction
Updated software has been released to address this condition. If you encounter a vehicle
with the above condition, reprogram the ECM with the latest available software.
Service Procedure
Parts Information
1. Ignition ON.
2. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.
3. Verify that no other HO2S or Fuel Trim DTCs
are set.
⇒ If any other HO2S or Fuel Trim DTCs are set,
go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List Vehicle.
⇒ If only DTC P2096 is set, go to Step 4.
Important: Stable battery voltage is critical during
programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or
loss of voltage will interrupt programming. Install the
EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool to maintain
system voltage. If not available, connect a fully charged
12 V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC
voltage supply. DO NOT connect a battery charger.
4. Reprogram the ECM with the latest available
software. Refer to K20 Engine Control Module:
Programming and Setup in SI.
No parts are required for this repair.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these
technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper
service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a
job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your
vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the
information.
