ACTION 1. Widen the gap between two pieces of body paneling in the right side trunk area. 2. Fill the gap with expanding foam. Refer to Service Procedure in this bulletin for the repair procedure. You MUST closely follow the entire SERVICE PROCEDURE as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair. Qualified technicians are properly trained individuals who have the equipment, tools, safety instruction, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. See your Nissan dealer to determine if this applies to your vehicle. 1/6 SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE: All pictures show repairs performed on a Maxima. The Altima is similar. CAUTION: Handle interior parts carefully to avoid damage. Work with clean hands and clean tools to avoid dirt and stains. IMPORTANT: Follow all cautions, warnings, and notes in the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) when working on or near a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), such as an air bag. 1. Open the trunk. Figure 1 2. Remove the three (3) clips. Figure 2 2/6 NTB18-032 3. Pull back the trunk mat and carpet. Carpet Figure 3 4. Recline forward the right rear passenger seatback. Clip 5. Remove the clip. Seatback Figure 4 6. Unfasten the ‘hook & loop’ fastener. Figure 5 3/6 NTB18-032 7. Carefully peel back the trunk side finisher. Figure 6 4/6 NTB18-032 8. Insert a plastic interior pry tool where shown in Figures 7 and 8, and then carefully widen the gap between the two body panels about 3/32 inch (3 mm). Make sure to insert the plastic interior pry tool at least 13/8 inches (35 mm) up into the gap, and then spread apart. CAUTION: Do NOT use a metal pry tool. It may puncture through the body panels. Use an interior plastic pry tool similar to the one shown below Parts Information. RH rear wheel housing Insert tool here Figure 7 9. Widen the gap and fill the area where shown in Figure 8 with expanding foam. See Parts Information for recommended products. Spray the expanding foam into the gap just widened. Spread out and fill this area Insert tool in this gap at least 35 mm Figure 8 5/6 NTB18-032 10. Wipe off any expanding foam before it dries that is not between the two body panels. 11. Reassemble the vehicle in reverse order of disassembly. 12. Test drive the vehicle, verify the noise has stopped.
