 The “Gearbox Malfunction” message has appeared in the Drivers Information Screen (DIS).
Workshop findings:
One or more of the following DTC(s) may be logged in the transmission control module (TCM), J217 (address
word 0002):
 DTC P175E00 (clutch 1 closes unintentionally)
And/Or
 DTC P176F00 (clutch 2 closes unintentionally)
And/Or
 DTC P176E00 (clutch 2 opens unintentionally)
Various other DTCs may also be logged in the transmission control module (TCM), J217 (address word 0002).

One or several of the following DTCs can be logged in the diagnosis log in address 0002 - gearbox electronics.
Please monitor the symptom and error type 2 as well as the frequency.

1. If any logged DTCs match exactly in symptom, error type 2 and have a frequency counter of 1 or 2 in the
diagnosis log (Figure 1), delete all DTCs in address 0002 - gearbox electronics. Test drive the vehicle and
check whether the DTC(s) is logged again. If the fault does not return check the vehicle history to make sure
this TSB has not been claimed before.
2. A. If the customer concern is gone and this TSB has not been claimed before, no further repairs are
necessary.
OR
B. If the customer concern returns, the frequency counter is higher than 2, the fault type 2 is static or if this
TSB has been claimed before this TSB does not apply. However; the following will need to be performed for
a repair direction:

Perform the ODIS test plan for the fault but do not perform a repair.
 Check the ATF level and condition.
 Obtain the transmission
identification information from
the bellhousing (Figure 2).

 Open an Audi Technical Assistance Contact.
 Attach a picture of the ATF condition, the ODIS test plan and enter the transmission identification
information into the contact.
 Contact the Audi Technical Assistance Center for further directions.
