Page 1 of 2 SI B34 07 17 Brakes June 2017 Technical Service VISUAL INSPECTION OF BRAKE DISCS/ROTORS FOR NEW CAR DELIVERIES MODEL All new vehicles prior to the first customer delivery only Note: This procedure described in this bulletin does not apply to CPO, demonstrator vehicles or any vehicle which has been previously delivered or placed in service. The same information can be found in SI B01 11 17. INFORMATION Due to certain handling and environmental conditions, the brake rotors friction surface may be subject to the formation of surface rust. While the presence of surface rust does not represent an issue related to the safe or proper operation of the vehicle, BMW is conducting an evaluation of this condition to ensure customer satisfaction. Therefore, effective immediately, BMW is instituting a Pilot Program to evaluate rusted brake discs/rotors on new vehicles under the following conditions: z Customer must not be inconvenienced to perform the evaluation z Vehicle being evaluated must be scheduled for customer delivery within 10 days of the evaluation z At least one brake disc/rotor of the vehicle must show signs of surface rust as outlined in the matrix below. z A PuMA Case must be submitted for each vehicle z Digital pictures of each of the four brake discs/rotors must be submitted with the Info PuMA Case Note: Pilot Program will run until September 1, 2017 PROCEDURE Evaluation of Brake Rotor Condition: If the rotor surface resembles the pictures from the attached “B011117 Rotors_Catalog_Attachment,” please follow the work procedures outlined below. The following procedure should be performed prior to customer delivery and not interfere with the delivery process. z The surface of the brake disc/rotor can be viewed through the https://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/cgi-bin/bulletin.aspx?sie_path=/tsb/bulletins/htm_store/42... 7/14/2017 Page 2 of 2 wheel opening. z It is not necessary to remove the wheel. z It is not necessary to place the vehicle on a lift. z z Take a digital photo for each brake disc/rotor (as shown in the example, left). Create an Info Only PuMA Case titled: “Brake Rotors Condition - Pre-Delivery” z Attach the digital photos to the Info PuMA Case. z Submit the case. PARTS INFORMATION Note: The procedure listed in the bulletin is simply an inspection, no parts are required.
