SUBJECT
Service Action: Emergency Call Button - Backlighting Is Not Working

F34 (3 Series Gran Turismo)
F36 (4 Series Gran Coupe)

SITUATION
The illumination (back lighting) for the E-Call (Emergency/SOS call) button in the FZD (sunroof
module) overhead console does not work.

start an SOS call, even though the back
lighting is not working.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves the F34 (3 Series Gran Turismo) and F36 (4 Series Gran Coupe)
models, produced from 7/27/2015 to 7/30/2015. Please perform it the next time this vehicle comes
to your workshop.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked
either in the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
CAUSE
Missing wiring harness for the illumination of the E-Call button.
CORRECTION
Install a retrofit harness.
PROCEDURE
z
Disconnect the battery as per Repair Instructions REP 61 20 900
z
Remove the FZD (sunroof) operating module. Refer to Repair Instructions REP 61 31 043
z
Locate the connector A21*1B.
z
Connect the retrofit Y cable into
plug A21*1B pin 8 and route it
along the wire harness

Locate connector A21*11B
z
Remove the coil on plug
A21*11B, look for the cables
from A21*11B pin 9 (WS/BL)
and pin 12 (WS/RT) and remove
them from the connector
z
Connect both wires to one wire
in the retrofitted Y-cable using a
butt connector
z
Reassemble vehicle
z
Reconnect battery
z
Open E-Call cover/flap and
verify that the button is
illuminated as shown in the
situation above
