SUBJECT Service Action: Repair Corrosion Protection Engine Compartment MODEL F30 (3 Series Sedan) F30H (ActiveHybrid 3) Produced from June 2012 to January 2013 SITUATION Various engine compartment battery cable mounting points are not sufficiently protected against corrosion. CAUSE Lack of corrosion protection can lead to improper connections associated with the battery cables. AFFECTED VEHICLES This Service Action involves F30 3 Series vehicles produced from June 2012 to January 2013. First check if a Service Action label with a code number 670 is already attached to the B-pillar. If a code number 670 has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is necessary. Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader. CORRECTION Repair the corrosion protection in the engine compartment. PROCEDURE Preliminary work 1. Disconnect the battery. 2. Open the hood to access the engine compartment. 3. Remove the cover in the passenger’s side of the engine compartment. Remove the cover (2). Main Work 1. Apply cavity wax to the bulkhead on the front passenger’s side of the dynamic strut. Replace the battery positive cable (connecting lead) in the passenger side’s units compartment. Remove the 2 mounting screws (A) and (B) and make sure the contact points are free of corrosion and dirt. Replace the connecting lead (1) and tighten the mounting screws to 15 Nm. This picture shows the installation location of the cover to be replaced, below the battery positive cable. Remove the cover on the battery positive terminal in the direction of the arrow, and replace it. 3. Replace the cover on the battery positive terminal. https://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/cgi-bin/bulletin.aspx?sie_path=/tsb/bulletins/htm_store/16141.1.B510614.... 5/2/2014 Page 4 of 7 4. Check the installation of the battery positive cable on the partition wall. Check that the battery positive cable installation is correct by inspecting the cable. Make sure the bend in the cable is away from the partition wall. This picture shows an incorrect installation of the cable: the cable might come in contact with the partition wall. If the installation of the cable is incorrect, remove the retaining nut and rotate the cable so the cable bends away from the partition wall, as shown in the picture. Reinstall the nut and torque to 8 Nm. 5. Grease the battery positive cable at the connection point on the partition wall. Remove the acoustic engine cover (if necessary, depending on the engine). Then remove the cover on the battery positive terminal in the engine compartment. https://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/cgi-bin/bulletin.aspx?sie_path=/tsb/bulletins/htm_store/16141.1.B510614.... 5/2/2014 Page 5 of 7 Coat the battery positive terminals in the engine compartment with contact grease, using a locally sourced flat brush.
