This occurs when turning the wheel from 30 to 60 degrees. CAUSE The unlocking pin in the SZL makes contact with the steering wheel. PROCEDURE 1. In the picture to the left, the white locking pin can be seen (from the driver’s side) looking between the steering wheel and the column. 2. Insert a plastic card (old credit https://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/cgi-bin/bulletin.aspx?sie_path=/tsb/bulletins/htm_store/15715.1.B61141... 11/12/2013 Page 2 of 3 card) between the steering wheel and the pin, pushing the pin back towards the SZL. Repeat this procedure a couple of times. 3. Turn the steering wheel to check if the noise is still present. 4. If the locking pin cannot be pushed back toward the SZL, remove the steering wheel per ISTA Repair Instruction 3233000, “Removing and installing steering wheel.” 5. Once the steering wheel is removed, loosen the 4 mounting screws for the SZL and push the pin back. Reinstall the steering wheel and check to see if the noise is gone. 6. If the noise is still there, complete and follow the recommendations in the NED (Non-Electric Diagnosis) test module for “Steering Interference Noise.” The test module can be accessed via the following ISTA path: Information search \ Function structure \ 05 Non-electrical diagnosis NED \ 02 Chassis and suspension \ 01 Interference noise \ Steering interference noise.
