remove outside material line from warranty table and include an additional model year applicability.
Rear Lid - Possible Water Ingress, Rear Lid Cannot be Opened
Customer may mention one of the following concerns:
1. Rear lid does not open using the locking system.
2. Corrosion around license plate light.
3. License plate light inoperative.
4. When rear lid is opened, water dripping into the trunk from the rear lid (Figure 1).

Technical Background
Water may enter into the rear lid cavity via openings in the fine-seam seal around the inner taillight and causes the
rear lid release button to malfunction.
Water may enter into the rear lid via leaking wiring harness grommets or high mounted brake light (3rd brake light)
seal.
Production Solution
Not applicable.
Service
Check the rear lid for possible areas of leakage. Replace rear lid components as needed if malfunctioning,
and perform the necessary repairs to prevent water ingress.
 Inspect the rear lid wiring harness grommet(s) installation to the rear lid and the body to ensure that they are
locked in position correctly (Figure 2, red ellipses).
 If loose, re-secure grommet(s) properly.

 Disassemble the high mounted (3rd) brake light (Figure 3), See repair Group 94 in Elsa.

 Make sure that the seal around the high mounted (3rd) brake light is positioned correctly when disassembled
and reposition the seal if necessary.
 Remove the rear lid trim, See Repair Group 70 in Elsa.
 Remove the rear lid grip piece (adapter with license plate light), See Repair Group 55 in Elsa (Figure 4).
 Check for water intrusion into the rear lid cavity and the rear lid release handle/button. (Figure 4, red arrows).
 If necessary, remove the handle with release button (Figure 4, item 1), See Repair Group 55 in Elsa.
 Remove moisture from the rear lid cavity and all affected components.

 In the event of any contact corrosion and/or malfunctioning, the rear lid handle with license plate lights must be
replaced.
 Disassemble inner taillights (right and left) See Repair Group 66 in Elsa.
 Clean rear lid (left and right) around the taillight cut-outs with silicone remover (Figure 5) (use part no. LVM 020
000 A5 or equivalent).
 Apply new sealant around the areas where the metal overlap in the inner taillight cut-outs (left and right) (Figure
5, green line) using part no. AKD 476 KD5 05).

 Reassemble taillight (right and left) according to the repair manual.
 Reassemble license plate lights with rear lid handle according to the repair manual.
 Run a water test in the rear lid area - the inside of the rear lid handle should remain dry.
 Reassemble rear lid trim according to the repair manual.
