Introduction
Some 2016 – 2019 model year 4Runner 4WD vehicles may exhibit a cyclical groaning/grinding
noise from the front differential in 2WD that is not present during 4WD operation. Follow the
Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address this condition.

 This repair is covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty. This warranty is in effect for
60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
 Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in

Repair Procedure
1. Confirm the condition exists.
Is a cyclical groaning/grinding noise present from the front differential in 2WD that is NOT
present during 4WD operation?
 YES — Continue to step 2.


NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.

Repair Procedure (continued)
2. Remove the front differential.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
 2016 – 2019 4Runner:
Drivetrain – Axle/Differential – “Axle and Differential: Front Differential Carrier Assembly(for
4WD): Disassembly”
3. Install the NEW front differential.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
 2016 – 2019 4Runner:
Drivetrain – Axle/Differential – “Axle and Differential: Front Differential Carrier Assembly(for
4WD): Installation”
4. Test-drive the vehicle to confirm the cyclical groaning/grinding noise is no longer present.
