Technical Service Bulletin 17 Oil level too high, warning light on 17 19 96 2048392/3 January 15, 2019. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 17 number 18-94 dated July 12, 2018 for reasons listed below. Workshop findings: Usually there are no DTCs in the engine control module (ECM), J623 (address word 0001). Oil level maybe overfilled when checked with service dipstick T40178. Technical Background Not applicable. Page 1 of 5 © 2019 Audi of America, Inc. All rights reserved. Technical Service Bulletin Production Solution Software update for the ECM, J623 (address word 0001). Service Perform the following checks: 1. Read the DTC memory of the ECM. 2. Read/assess the measured value with the ODIS measured value identifier IDE09529 "Fuel mass flow fumigation from engine oil". Warm up the engine at idle speed and observe the above measured value together with the engine oil temperature. The evaporation process of fuel in the engine oil starts at about 122°F engine oil temperature. a. If the value of the fuel mass flow is at least intermittently above 75 mg/s, this clearly points to a high fuel share in the engine oil (over 0.5 l). In this case, the condition is caused by an extreme short distance operation profile of the customer. We recommend to explain the background to the customer. Update the ECM with SVM code 01A225. b. If the limit of 75 mg/s is not exceeded and the condition cannot be reproduced, the driving profile of the customer before the workshop visit may have completely consumed the fuel in the engine oil. In this case, we also recommend to enquire about the driving profile of the customer for a possible explanation. In this case, also update the ECM with SVM code 01A225. An oil change is not necessary. c. Adjust oil level using T40178 to proper level. 3. Note: Increased engine oil level. Short distance journeys, particularly in low temperatures can result in the sporadic behavior of the vehicle (increased engine oil level). The injected fuel cannot completely evaporate on the cold cylinder walls and therefore gets into the oil circuit. In short distance journeys, the engine oil temperature does not rise enough (min. 60°C) to remove the fuel from the oil. Even in oil temperatures over 60°C it can again be supplied to the combustion via the crankcase breather. That is why there is a warning lamp "warming-up request" which is shown in the instrument cluster according to the defined operating conditions. Together with the display "Please reduce oil level". SVM Update Instructions 1. Follow all instructions in TSB 2011732: 00 Software Version Management (SVM), operating instructions. 2. Update the ECM, J623 (address word 0001) using the SVM action code as listed in the table below if necessary: Page 2 of 5 © 2019 Audi of America, Inc. All rights reserved.
