Technical Tips Technical Tip Topic 01-17-04TT – Perceived Hesitation while on an Incline Market area United States 444 Volkswagen of America, Inc. (6444) Brand Volkswagen Date June 2, 2017 Condition ATTENTION: THIS IS A TECH TIP, NOT A TECHNICAL BULLETIN. TECH TIPS ARE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH WARRANTY CLAIMING. Perceived Hesitation while on an Incline Model(s) Year Eng. Code Trans. Code VIN Range From VIN Range To Touareg 2011-2016 All All All All Technical Background Customer may perceive a hesitation when Hill Hold operation is occurring. Service The Hill-Hold function is controlled by the electronic parking brake via the ABS control unit -J104- at an ATF temperature of less than approx. 10°C (50°F). However at temperatures above 10°C the function is performed by the transmission. If the Transmission Control Module -J217- detects a slope based on the rolling resistance, while simultaneously detecting a vehicle speed of 0 mph, it shifts to 2nd gear. Rolling back is not possible in 2nd gear, because the locking freewheel will not allow the double planetary gear sets annulus to rotate backwards. As such, this is normal operation and no repairs should be attempted.
