Introduction
Some 2014 – 2019 model year 4Runner vehicles may exhibit a whine or groan noise from the
rear of the vehicle. This condition may occur while driving around 40 – 60 mph at a consistent
speed, slight acceleration, or slight deceleration. This condition may be caused by rear differential
vibration transferring through the chassis and body. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to
improve this condition.
Production Change Information
This bulletin applies to 2014 – 2019 model year 4Runner vehicles with the condition described in the
Introduction. The Production Change Effective VIN shown below defines which parts —
pre-countermeasure or post-countermeasure — are applicable to the repair.

60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.

Repair Procedure
1. Confirm the condition exists.
Does the vehicle exhibit a whine or groan noise when traveling 40 – 60 mph during slight
acceleration or deceleration or at consistent speed?
 YES — Continue to step 2.

NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.
2. Check the VIN.
Is the vehicle build date pre-countermeasure or post-countermeasure?
A. If pre-countermeasure, continue to step 3.
B. If post-countermeasure, go to step 4.
3. Install the dampening pads.
A. Remove the third-row seat if equipped.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
 2014 / 2015 / 2016 – 2019 4Runner:
Vehicle Interior – Seat – “Seat: Rear No. 2 Seat Assembly: Removal”
B. Lift the trunk carpet to access the metal floor of the trunk.

4. Install body mass to cab mounts Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 6.
A. Remove both left-hand and right-hand deck trim side panels to access bolts.
B. On cab mounts Nos. 5 and 6, add body mass and replace bolts with
extended bolts (52217-60070).
C. On cab mounts Nos. 3 and 4, add body mass and reuse bolts.
D. Reuse ALL washers and nuts.
Torque: 56N*m (553 kg*cm, 40 ft*lb)

5. Check the VIN.
Is the vehicle build date pre-countermeasure or post-countermeasure?
A. If post-countermeasure, go to step 6.
B. If pre-countermeasure, replace the rear differential.
NOTE
Go to step 6 if the vehicle is TRD Pro or Off Road.
(1) Remove the rear differential.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
 2014 / 2015 / 2016 – 2019 4Runner:
Drivetrain – Axle/Differential – “Axle and Differential: Rear Differential Carrier
Assembly (w/o Differential Lock): Removal”
NOTE
If the vehicle is 2WD, do NOT replace the propeller shaft.
(2) Install the NEW rear differential.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
 2014 / 2015 / 2016 – 2019 4Runner:
Drivetrain – Axle/Differential – “Axle and Differential: Rear Differential Carrier
Assembly (w/o Differential Lock): Installation”
(3) Go to step 7.
NOTE
Skip step 6 if the vehicle is 2WD.
6. Replace the propeller shaft.
A. Remove the propeller shaft.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
 2014 / 2015 / 2016 – 2019 4Runner:
Drivetrain – Drive Shaft/Propeller Shaft – “Drive Shaft / Propeller Shaft: Propeller
Shaft Assembly (for 4WD): Removal”
B. Install the NEW propeller shaft.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
 2014 / 2015 / 2016 – 2019 4Runner:

7. Reinstall the third-row seat if equipped.

8. Confirm the whine/groan noise at 40 – 60 mph is improved.
