Condition Correction General Motors has decided to conduct a voluntary emissions recall involving certain 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD/5500HD/6500HD vehicles equipped with a diesel engine. The engine control module (ECM) in these vehicles does not properly diagnose malfunctions of Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor #5. If engine control system diagnostic tests determine that this temperature sensor is not performing as expected, the control system becomes locked in a pending fault state. When this happens, the system cannot illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or clear the pending fault state, even when normal temperature sensor performance is confirmed. While in the pending fault state, other diagnostic tests may not run, and exhaust braking performance capability may be reduced. Dealers are to reprogram the engine control module with modified software. Parts No parts are required for this repair. GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the tools, equipment, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information. Reason For This Recall: Your 2019 Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty 4500HD/5500HD/6500HD vehicle, equipped with a 6.6L Diesel engine may have an engine control module (ECM) that does not properly diagnose malfunctions of Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor #5. Your vehicle is equipped with an improperly functioning onboard emission-related diagnostic system that violates California and Federal standards and regulations. What Will Be Done: Your GM dealer will reprogram the ECM with modified software. This service will be performed for you at no charge. Eligibility for the ECM reprogramming will not be denied solely due to your vehicle having nonGM parts or repairs performed by outlets other than GM franchised dealers. How Long Will The Repair Take? Because of service scheduling requirements, it is likely that your dealer will need your vehicle longer than the actual service correction time of approximately 23 minutes. What You Should Do: Please contact your GM dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service date. Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your dealer. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much time will be needed to schedule, process, and repair your vehicle. If you have any questions or need any assistance, just contact your dealer or the appropriate Customer Assistance Center at the number listed below.
