202185 TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 10R80 Automatic Transmission - Harsh Engagement Into Drive With Or Without DTCs P0772 And/Or P2704 16 June 2020 Model: Ford 2020 Transit Transmission/Transaxle: (10R80) Issue: Some 2020 Transit vehicles equipped with a 10R80 automatic transmission may exhibit a harsh engagement into drive with or without an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0772 and/or P2704 in the powertrain control module (PCM). This may be due to sticking valves in the main control valve body. Most vehicles will improve and no longer exhibit the condition after the first 160 km (100 mi) of driving. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the main control valve body and/or perform drive procedure. Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria: • 2020 Transit • 10R80 automatic transmission • Harsh forward engagement • With or without illuminated MIL with DTCs P0772 and/or P2704 NOTE: Part quantity refers to the number of that service part number required, which may be different than the number of individual pieces. Repair/Claim Coding Causal Part: 7A100 Condition Code: 49 Service Procedure NOTE: Most vehicles will improve and no longer exhibit the condition after the first 160 km (100 mi) of driving. 1. Does the vehicle exhibit DTCs P0772 and/or P2704? (1). Yes - replace the main control valve body. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01. Repair is complete. (2). No - proceed to Step 2. 2. Does the vehicle have more than 160 km (100 mi) on the odometer? (1). Yes - replace the main control valve body. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01. Repair is complete. (2). No - proceed to Step 3. 3. Perform the following drive procedure at normal operating temperature. (1). Perform reverse engine stalls at 1500 revolutions per minute (RPM) for 6 seconds. Hold neutral at 1500-2000 RPM for 5-10 seconds. Repeat for a total of 8 times. (2). Let the vehicle idle for 5 minutes. (3). Perform reverse engine stalls at 1500 revolutions per minute (RPM) for 6 seconds. Hold neutral at 1500-2000 RPM for 5-10 seconds. Repeat for a total of 8 times. (4). Drive the vehicle for 5 minutes under 40 mph for roughly 2-3 miles. (5). Perform drive engine stalls at 1500 RPM for 6 seconds. Hold neutral at 1500-2000 RPM for 10 seconds. Repeat for a total of 8 times. (6). Accelerate from a stop with light throttle ensuring that the 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8 shifts occur at engine speeds below approximately 2500 RPM (a 1-3 shift may occur in place of a 1-2 shift, which is normal operation). Continue to accelerate for at least 2 seconds after 7-8 shift. Driving from 8th gear or above, brake very gently to a complete stop allowing all the coast down shifts to occur. Repeat for a total of 8 times. The closed pedal coasting downshifts should now be smooth. (7). Shift the vehicle from NEUTRAL to REVERSE and NEUTRAL to DRIVE 6 to 8 times to confirm that adaptation produced acceptable shift quality. 4. Does the vehicle still exhibit the condition after the drive procedure? (1). Yes - replace the main control valve body. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01. (2). No - repair is complete. NOTE: Advise the customer this vehicle is equipped with an adaptive transmission shift strategy which allows the vehicle's computer to learn the transmission's unique parameters and improve shift quality. When the adaptive strategy is reset, the computer will begin a relearning process.
