The MIL may illuminated with DTC P06DD or the customer may complain of excessive oil consumption.
Cause:
Under investigation
Correction:
If the vehicle arrives with a P06DD set, check the engine oil level. If the oil level is below operating range, or if excessive oil consumption is otherwise
suspected, perform an oil consumption test using the sheet below.
Important: Before starting the test, measure the quantity of oil drained from the crankcase (excluding oil lter). Record the drained amount in the
spreadsheet below. Fill with fresh oil.
Ask the customer to log their type of driving (surface streets or highway), what percentage of their driving is done with a trailer and what the trailer
weights. Documenting the data will aid in root cause analysis.
Be sure the oil level is maintained within the operating range indicated on the dipstick, and wait a minimum of 30 minutes after stopping the engine to
check the oil level.
Towing and Aggressive Driving (sustained high speed)
A higher rate of oil consumption is normal for vehicles that are towing or being driven aggressively. If the oil consumption test indicates that the rate of
consumption is equal to or less than 1.0 quart (0.946L) of oil every 1,000 miles (1,600 km), explain to the customer, that their engine meets the guidelines
for oil consumption at this time. No further action is required.
