Southern Operations Birmingham, AL SIL 786 Service Information Letter January 25, 2021 Units Affected: Units mounted on Aluminum Bodies having Pillow Block Style Body Door Hinges (Verify that your unit serial number is affected by reviewing the attached list in this SIL or by accessing your fleet on connect.altec.com/login) Body Door Hinge Corrosion Altec is committed to providing our customers safe and reliable products from initial delivery throughout the useful life of the machine. Some customers have reported difficulty opening and closing doors or box lids on aluminum bodies. This has included doors or box lids popping or requiring excessive force when being opened and closed. Certain bodies are equipped with doors or box lids that contain aluminum hinge rods going through metal hinges that are manufactured from a different metal. Under some conditions the hinges can stick or seize due to salt solutions that damage the protective coating of the aluminum hinge rod. If the hinge rod seizes, it can cause damage to the hinge, door, or box lid. To protect the hinge rod from being damaged and seizing, clean the hinge rod and apply a corrosion inhibitor lubricant. LPS 3 Rust Inhibitor, Altec part number 970293161, (refer to Figure 1) has been found in Altec testing to provide the longest corrosion protection. A checklist and lubrication process is provided on page 2. Include this in the Preventive Maintenance and Inspection Checklist for future use. This repair is not covered under the Altec Warranty Policy. Call 1-877-GO ALTEC (1-877-462-5832) to schedule the work to be done by an Altec service technician.
