SSM 49989 - 2017-2022 F-Super Duty - 4WD – Steering Binds/Front Driveline
Noise - Hublocks Remain Engaged After Shifting From 4WD To 2WD
Some 2017-2022 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with four-wheel drive (4WD) may exhibit steering
bind or front driveline noise because the hublocks do not automatically disengage immediately
following a shift from 4WD to two-wheel drive (2WD). This may be due to driveline tension between
the axle and hub keeping them engaged. To correct the condition, shift the vehicle from DRIVE to
REVERSE to release the driveline tension. This is a normal operating characteristic of the vehicle
and replacement of the hublocks is not recommended. If the concern remains after shifting into
REVERSE and allowing the vehicle to move approximately 5 feet(1.5 meters), remove and inspect
the hublocks for any damage. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 308-07A. Repair as
necessary.
