50 Painted surface of the suspension strut tower is poorly prepared 50 21 07 2064464/1 September 7, 2021. Model(s) Year VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment Q5, SQ5 2020 - 2022 All Not Applicable Q5 sportback 2022 All Not Applicable Condition Workshop findings: The painted surface of the top of the suspension strut tower appears to be poorly finished. The underlying metal surface appears to be poorly prepared before painting. There are coarse sanding marks visible particularly near where the VIN is stamped. Technical Background 1. In the production process of joining the suspension strut tower to the adjoining structural components weld splatter is created, and after cooling, adheres to the metal surfaces. When the welding process is complete these surfaces are ground and sanded to remove any welding splatter that may have been deposited on the metal surfaces. In some cases this process was not as refined as necessary and visible scoring may appear through the painted top coat (Figure 1). Figure 1. Area of the suspension strut tower with a poor finish.
