Timing Chain / Camshaft Sprocket Installation-Procedure Information
INTRODUCTION:
This Service Information Bulletin announces an additional service procedure for timing chain and / or
cam sprocket replacement on FA and FB type engines. This information addresses the rare situation
in which the lock pin inside the cam sprocket not being in the “lock” position when the engine was
shut off prior to servicing. This condition can occur under normal engine operation.

2) Work Outline:
Prior to performing service work to the
timing chain and/or the cam sprocket,
confirm if alignment mark on the sensor
plate is aligned and/or rotating free from
the sprocket.
Can the sensor
plate be rotated
free from the cam
sprocket?
NO
It may be a separate issue from the
condition outlined in this Service
Bulletin (mechanical seizure, etc.).

Refer to the work procedures
according to the applicable Subaru
Service Manual.

camshaft
sprocket
assembly being
replaced with a
new one?

Refer to the work procedure in Section 3.
3) Work Procedure:
When setting the timing on an engine that has the sensor plate moving free of the camshaft
sprocket housing, use the following procedure below in conjunction with the information
provided in the applicable service manual. This symptom does not affect the engine operation next
time the cam mechanism is hydraulically activated. The following work prodedure is to used for
EXAMPLE purposes. In this example, a sensor plate is found to be “free moving” from the left
intake cam sprocket housing on a FA20 type engine.

EXAMPLE: (FA20 Left Intake Cam Sprocket)
In this case, the Housing and Sensor
Plate are moving free of each other.
The Alignment Marks on the “free
moving” Sensor Plate DO NOT need
alignment since the plate is not
locked to the housing at this time.

MUST be aligned with the colored chain
markings and Crank Sprocket Timing
Marks as shown.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
•
Refer to the applicable Service Manual and review: General Description > Repair Contents
> Action required before & after Battery Disconnect. Additionally, record any stored seat
position(s) before proceeding. Relearn any seat position memory after work is complete. If
the power rear gate (PRG) height has been customized, that position must also be noted and
relearned.
•
Whenever reconnecting the ground cable terminal to the battery sensor, torque to 7.5Nm (5.5ft.lbs. or 66inch-lbs.) while supporting the sensor with the other hand as outlined in the applicable
Service Manual under: STARTING/CHARGING SYSTSEMS > Battery Sensor.
