Upon investigation, it is found that the engine ECU has been damaged and needs to be replaced (Fig 1). In several cases, it was found that the cause of the ECU damage was improper jump starting. Further investigation found that ECU damage may occur if the jumper cables are hooked up on or around the engine ECU or ECU mounting bracket (Fig 2). RECOMMENDATIONS To prevent this condition from occurring, it is recommended that the jumper cables be attached as described in the owner’s manual. Below is an example of the correct jump start locations for 22 MY Highlander HV (Fig 3). Please consult the appropriate owners or repair manual to confirm the correct jump start location on other models.
